Corrugated Plastic (Danpla)

PP corrugated plastic (Danpla) sheets & boxes - 3/4/5mm, ESD anti-static, made to order.

What is Danpla corrugated plastic - and when to choose ICD Vietnam

Danpla is the Vietnamese market name for PP corrugated sheet (Polypropylene Twinwall) - a polypropylene plastic material with a three-layer honeycomb structure: two flat skin faces sandwiching a hollow parallel flute core. A density of 0.90-0.91 g/cm² makes Danpla lighter than water, yet its stiffness-to-weight ratio is 4-5 times that of solid PP of the same thickness. Main applications: returnable folding boxes, line partitions, kanban trays, pallet liner sheets, and ESD packaging for electronics.

Reasons to choose ICD Vietnam for Danpla orders:

  • Direct manufacturing since 2011 - no middlemen, virgin PP quality control, ESD test reports per batch.
  • 1-3 day nationwide delivery - 500-1,000 sheets per thickness in stock in Hanoi, fabrication from DXF/PDF drawings in 5-7 days.
  • Low MOQ, clear discounts - orders of 100 products get 8-12% off, 500 products 15-20%, 2,000 products 22-28%.

Number of reuses 50-200 times 5-15 times 300-500 times
Cost per use VND 300-1,500/m² VND 2,500-8,000/m² VND 500-1,200/m²
Folds flat when empty Yes - saves 75% storage Yes but tears easily No
ESD version Yes - 10^4 to 10^6 Ω No standard Yes but expensive
Real-world lifespan 3-8 years 3-12 months 8-15 years

Quick selection rule:

  • Danpla - for internal circulation, reuse from 20 times, moisture/ESD-sensitive goods, when folding flat is needed, loads under 30kg/box.
  • Carton - one-way non-returnable packaging, dry products, high-quality 4-color offset printing, extremely low budget.
  • Solid PP/HDPE - loads over 50kg/box, direct forklift impact, strong chemical washing (food/pharma), lifespan over 10 years.

Drawbacks and notes when using Danpla

Danpla has clear advantages over carton in reuse environments, but there are 6 limitations to understand before ordering so you do not pick the wrong application.

Poor resistance to hard impact at edges and corners: The PP honeycomb structure keeps the sheet light and elastic, but when dropped from above 1.2m or hit directly by a forklift, the sheet edge and box corner can delaminate and collapse. Applications with hard impact need solid PP/HDPE boxes instead.

Weak against UV outdoors: Standard Danpla sheets have no UV additive. After 6-12 months of direct sun, the sheet yellows, becomes brittle and loses bending strength. For outdoor use, specifically request a UV-stabilized sheet or an outer PE coating.

Deforms above 80-85°C: PP has a softening point of ~160°C, but Danpla sheets deform from 80-85°C due to internal structural stress. Do not use in sun-baked container yards in the South all day, ovens, or next to high-heat equipment.

Hard to print and label conventionally: The PP surface has low surface energy, so ordinary inks do not adhere. Regular labels peel after 3-6 months. Corona treatment, UV ink or specialized PE-PP labels are needed.

Not suitable for concentrated loads over 30kg/box: The honeycomb structure ideally distributes load evenly, but when load concentrates on one point - a heavy sharp-cornered object, uneven stacking - the hollow section collapses locally. Loads over 30kg/box or sharp-edged metal objects need solid HDPE boxes.

More complex to recycle than solid plastic: Danpla is a 3-layer laminated PP structure, not as simply recycled as homogeneous resin pellets. However, since its 3-8 year lifespan is 3-12x longer than carton, total waste per cycle is still significantly lower.

Summary - when NOT to use Danpla: container yards over 80°C, applications with strong direct impact, high-quality 4-color offset printing, loads over 30kg/box, uncovered outdoors, contact with concentrated acids or chlorinated solvents.

Frequently asked questions about Danpla

1. How do 3mm and 4mm Danpla sheets differ? When should I choose each?

The 3mm sheet (600-720 g/m², 15-25 kg/m² load) is the most common thickness at ICD, making up 60% of orders for kanban boxes, line trays and internal partitions. The 4mm sheet (760-880 g/m², 25-40 kg/m² load) is 40% stiffer but 43% more expensive and 22% heavier. Rule: if the box holds plastic components, electronics or textiles - choose 3mm; if it holds cast metal components, heavy copper/iron or concrete formwork - 4mm is required. The 5mm sheet is only for sheet pallets or temporary warehouse floors bearing 40-60 kg/m².

2. How is ESD anti-static Danpla different from standard Danpla? When is it required?

ESD Danpla blends 2-4% of 1-7 micron conductive carbon fiber into the PP pellets before extrusion, creating a surface resistance of 10^4-10^6 Ω (standard Danpla is 10^14 Ω - an insulator that builds static). ESD is required when: assembling PCBs before casing, producing chips/ICs, power MOSFETs, optical sensors, camera modules, RAM/SSD before final packaging, OLED before frame fitting. ESD is not needed for: jacketed cables, metal screws, mechanical products, cased household goods. ESD only comes in black (due to the carbon fiber), no other ESD colors.

3. How much reverse-shipping cost do folding Danpla boxes save?

A fixed box takes the same volume empty as full - the return trip costs the same as the outbound. A folding box collapses flat to 15-20% of original height, stacking 5-7 boxes in the same floor area. As a result, return-leg logistics cost drops 60-75%. Example, a 600x400x300mm box: fixed = 240 boxes/5-ton truck, folding = 1,200-1,600 boxes/truck. For an automotive vendor-OEM milk run running 200-300 cycles/year, the shipping savings usually exceed the box price within 6-9 months.

4. Can a 2mm Danpla sheet be used for goods boxes?

No. A 2mm sheet only bears 5-10 kg/m², not stiff enough for the vertical walls of a goods box. Correct uses for 2mm: indoor advertising signs, temporary floor lining during interior work, light partitions inside trays/boxes (not box walls), temporary 1-3 month POSM promotional signs. The minimum for a goods box is a 3mm sheet.

5. Which Danpla box sizes are most common - do they need custom ordering?

Four common modules: (1) EU/Euro 600x400xH with H=100/150/220/280/350mm, compatible with 1200×800 and 1200x1000mm pallets, (2) small kanban 400x300xH with H=100/150/220mm for line-side supply, (3) large 1000x600xH with H=280/350/440mm for component clusters. Choosing these modules avoids a custom cutting die - delivery in 5-7 days. ICD produces custom sizes from a minimum 200x150x80mm to a maximum 1200x1000x600mm for a single box (larger must be a multi-part assembly).

6. Can Danpla withstand cold-storage temperatures below 0°C?

PP Homopolymer (ICD’s standard line) withstands -20°C to +80°C, enough for most Vietnamese industrial warehouses. PP Copolymer, blended with 5-15% ethylene for added flexibility, withstands -40°C to +80°C - used for food/pharma cold storage. When ordering, state the operating temperature clearly if below -10°C so ICD selects the right material, avoiding embrittlement and edge cracking when folding/opening.

7. Can logos and barcodes be printed on Danpla sheets?

Yes. Four methods: flatbed UV printing (multi-color, 720-1,440 DPI, VND 15,000-50,000/m² depending on ink coverage, the most common), screen printing (1-2 colors, runs over 200 sheets of the same design, lowest cost), flexo printing (runs of tens of thousands of boxes), pre-printed decal stickers (small orders, fast content changes). The PP surface has low surface energy - ICD applies corona discharge treatment before printing so ink adheres above 95% in a cross-cut test.

8. What is the real-world lifespan of a Danpla box?

It depends on structure and frequency: fixed boxes 2-3 years at 100-150 cycles/month; carton-style folding boxes 50-150 cycles; premium folding boxes with aluminum trim + rotating corners 200-300 cycles (3-5 years). Lifespan-reducing factors: direct outdoor UV exposure beyond 24-36 months (skin embrittlement), hard forklift impact (flute breakage), strong organic chemicals (toluene/xylene/MEK swelling the PP), continuous temperatures above 80°C.

9. Does ICD produce Danpla to custom-size drawings? What is the MOQ?

Yes - this is 90% of ICD’s B2B orders. Send a DXF/PDF/JPG drawing and ICD quotes within 24h with delivery time. Typical MOQ: non-standard thickness sheets (2.5mm or 6mm) 200 sheets; custom-size boxes 100 boxes for the fixed type, 50 boxes for the folding type; ICD Npack system 30 sets (simple) or 100 sets (with RFID tracking); custom Pantone color 500 sheets. Orders below MOQ are still accepted but priced 15-25% higher due to machine setup cost.

10. Is Danpla recyclable? Is it an environmentally friendly plastic?

Yes. Danpla is 100% virgin PP, resin code 5 (PP), fully recyclable, BPA-free, no heavy metals, food-contact safe when using food-grade PP. Most FDI customers require Danpla as part of an ESG strategy because, versus single-use carton, it cuts packaging waste 70-85%/year for the same number of transport cycles. ICD takes back used Danpla from customers to recycle into next-generation sheets at a preferential price.

11. Are orders shipped nationwide? What is the delivery time?

Yes. North: 1-2 working days for stock items, free inner-city Hanoi delivery on orders from VND 5 million. Central (Thanh Hoa - Khanh Hoa): 2-3 days. South: 3-4 days, with a transit warehouse in District 12, HCMC. Drawing-based fabrication adds 5-7 production days before shipping. Out-of-province shipping surcharges follow a separate table - usually VND 800,000-2,500,000/trip depending on region and volume.

12. Does ICD provide ESD test reports and quality certificates?

Yes. For ESD Danpla orders, ICD measures surface resistance with an ACL-385 or Trek 152-1 meter at 6 distributed points on each sheet/box per batch, issuing a test report stating batch code, production date, and temperature/humidity at measurement, per ANSI/ESD S20.20 or JIS L 1094 as the customer requires. For food-grade Danpla or pharmaceutical use, ICD issues a COA (Certificate of Analysis) and PP material MSDS. For FDI customers, it can additionally issue RoHS, REACH, and SVHC-free certificates per EU Annex XIV.
