Stretch Film

Virgin LLDPE stretch film for hand & machine wrapping - 17-30 micron, stock in Hanoi & HCMC.

Author: ICD Vietnam, industrial packaging materials specialist - 10 years advising on warehousing solutions.

ICD Vietnam supplies 2 lines of PE stretch film (pallet wrap): hand rolls with 1.8-4.5 kg of actual film and machine rolls with 14-17 kg of actual film, made from 100% virgin LLDPE, operating temperature -30°C to +60°C.

Choose ICD stretch film when:

  • Consumer goods and distribution warehouses: MPE21-MPE50 hand rolls (17 mic, clear) - wrap 3-5 minutes/pallet, see the goods without unwrapping.
  • Factories and large warehouses, 30+ pallets/day: MPE150 or MPEM Super Tough machine rolls - 30-60 seconds/pallet, saving VND 100,000-109,000/pallet versus hand wrapping.
  • Cold storage, machinery, security-sensitive goods: MPEM Super Tough 25-30 mic or black/blue film for color-coded classification.

Industry Suitable line Specific requirements
Consumer goods, distribution warehouses MPE30 / MPE38 hand roll Clear film to inventory without unwrapping
Factories with 30+ pallets/day MPE150 / MPEM machine roll 30-60 sec/pallet, requires Ø76 mm core wrapper
Cold storage, freezers MPEM Super Tough 25-30 mic Withstands -30°C, high thickness blocks external moisture
Machinery, metal, sharp corners MPEM Super Tough 25-30 mic Wrap 4-5 layers instead of standard 2-3 to avoid punctures
Pharma, electronics needing security Black MPE / MPEM film Conceals labels, batch numbers - lowers theft-targeting risk
Multi-SKU warehouses needing color sorting Blue + clear + black film Color coding: blue = type A, clear = type B, black = secured goods
Container export goods MPE150 / MPEM machine roll PE film needs no ISPM-15 (applies to wood only)
Produce, packaged food MPE30 / MPE38 hand roll Odorless virgin LLDPE - does not affect food odor

6. How to choose PE film by throughput - ICD 4-step Checklist

Most buyers go wrong by choosing on price/roll instead of real cost/pallet. These 4 steps lead to the right decision:

Step 1: Count actual throughput.

Count pallets wrapped on a typical working day - not a peak day. Under 10 pallets/day: MPE21 or MPE30 hand roll. 10-30 pallets/day: MPE38 or MPE50 hand roll for fewer roll changes. From 30 pallets/day: calculate machine ROI before continuing to wrap by hand.

Step 2: Check core weight - a common trap.

The listed weight includes the plastic core. Actual film = gross - core:

  • MPE21 (2.1 kg gross) - 0.3 kg core - actual film 1.8 kg
  • MPE30 (3.0 kg gross) - 0.5 kg core - actual film 2.5 kg
  • MPE38 (3.8 kg gross) - 0.5 kg core - actual film 3.3 kg
  • MPE50 (5.0 kg gross) - 0.5 kg core - actual film 4.5 kg
  • MPE150 (15 kg gross) - 1.0 kg core - actual film 14 kg

When comparing other suppliers’ prices: always ask for the core weight - not the gross weight. A 600g core instead of 300g = 300g less film/roll, equivalent to losing VND 3,000-5,000/roll.

Step 3: Calculate the real cost/pallet.

Hand-wrapping cost per pallet: 1 MPE30 roll (VND 135,000) + 5 minutes of labor (~VND 1,900) = about VND 137,000/pallet. Machine-wrapping cost per pallet: MPE150 (VND 670,000/roll, wraps 20-25 pallets) + minimal labor = about VND 28,000-34,000/pallet. Saving: VND 100,000-109,000/pallet with a machine.

Break-even: a VND 20 million machine investment, saving VND 100,000/pallet = payback after 200 pallets. A 50-pallet/day warehouse: payback in 4 working days.

Step 4: Choose thickness by goods type.

17 micron (MPE21-MPE50): suitable for standard goods without sharp corners. 20-25 micron (MPE150): all-purpose, carton and plastic-boxed goods. 25-30 micron (MPEM Super Tough): machinery, metal, cold storage, heavy goods with corners.

Frequently asked questions about PE stretch film

Are PE film and stretch film different?

They are the same product under different names. PE film (polyethylene film), stretch film, cling wrap and pallet wrap all refer to the same LLDPE film used to secure goods on a pallet. The name “stretch film” is common in export documents, while “PE film” is the everyday term in Vietnamese warehousing.

Can hand rolls and machine rolls be used interchangeably?

Not recommended. Hand rolls (Ø54 mm core) do not fit a standard wrapping machine spindle (Ø76 mm core). Machine rolls weighing 7-15 kg cannot be hand-wrapped. In addition, machine rolls usually have higher stretch (200-300%) optimized for the machine’s mechanical pull; hand wrapping would not exploit the full stretch.

How does virgin PE film differ from recycled PE film?

Virgin PE film is made entirely from new resin - clear, odorless, with good low-temperature resistance. Recycled film uses recycled plastic, is usually cloudier, has an odor, 30-50% lower stretch, and becomes brittle below 0°C. Recycled is 20-30% cheaper, but the real cost/pallet can be higher because more layers are needed to reach the same firmness.

How many layers should I wrap on a standard pallet?

The common standard is 2-3 wrap layers with 17-20 mic film. For heavy or sharp-cornered goods: 4-5 layers and 25-30 mic film. Correct procedure: start from the pallet base and wrap upward, overlap each turn by 50% of the film width, finish at the top and tuck the edge down.

Is PE film safe for food?

Virgin LLDPE is odorless and non-toxic. ICD PE film is safe for indirect contact with packaged food (wrapped outside the carton). For direct contact with fresh food, a separate Food Grade certificate is required.

How can I tell virgin from recycled PE film?

3 quick tests: (1) Look: virgin is clear, recycled is cloudy with small specks; (2) Pull: virgin stretches evenly without tearing at 150%; recycled stretches unevenly and tears easily; (3) Weigh the core: a 0.3-0.5 kg core is ICD; a 0.8-1.2 kg core signals a heavy core used to hide a small amount of film.

Does PE film need an ISPM-15 certificate for export?

No. ISPM-15 is a phytosanitary standard applying only to wood material (wooden pallets, wooden crates). PE film is synthetic plastic, carries no pest risk and is outside the scope of ISPM-15. If a foreign partner requests a certificate for PE film, that is their own requirement, not a mandatory international regulation.

How do I store PE film to last 24 months?

Store in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and prolonged temperatures above 40°C. Keep away from solvents, lubricants and chemicals. Standing or lying flat is fine - do not stack more than 5 layers to avoid core deformation.

Does ICD deliver PE film in special custom sizes?

Currently ICD supplies the standard 500 mm width for both hand and machine rolls. This is the most common width for standard pallets (1100×1100 mm, 1200×1000 mm). For other widths (750 mm, 250 mm) or large quantities to custom specifications - contact us directly for batch-order advice.
