Packaging supplies are the machines and materials used to wrap, secure, brace and dry goods while they are stored, handled and shipped. ICD Vietnam supplies them in five groups: stretch wrapping machines, PE stretch film, slip sheets and paper corner guards, air dunnage bags, and container desiccants. List prices run from 4,000 VND for a paper corner guard to 350,000,000 VND for a Robopac pallet wrapper.
1. What packaging supplies include
Packaging supplies, often called industrial packaging materials, protect the whole shipping unit rather than each retail product. Each group deals with one risk: film keeps the load from toppling, corner guards stop carton edges from crushing, dunnage bags stop cargo shifting in a container, and desiccants keep mould and rust off goods on long voyages.

The five groups of packaging supplies ICD sells:
- Stretch wrapping machines for cartons, pallets, long goods and luggage, from carton wrappers and semi-automatic turntables to mobile wrapping robots, priced 22,000,000 to 350,000,000 VND.
- PE stretch film 500 mm wide in virgin LLDPE: 17-micron hand rolls of 2.1 kg (95,000 VND) and 3.8 kg (145,000 VND), plus a hand dispenser for wrapping without a machine.
- Slip sheets and paper corner guards: kraftliner sheets 0.9 mm and 1.5 mm thick, with or without an HDPE waterproof coating, plus V-shaped corner guards cut to the size of the load.
- Air dunnage bags: kraft paper bags in 12 sizes from 50×100 to 120×240 cm, reusable woven PP bags, air cushions for cartons and an inflation gun for large-valve bags.
- Desiccants of the Absortech brand in 7 lines, from 2 g packets placed in cartons to 1 kg hanging bags and 2 kg blankets for containers.

3. Supplies for palletised loads
A pallet load needs two layers of protection: one that binds the cartons into a single block and one that guards the weakest points, the edges and corners. The binding layer is stretch film, which grips the load through its elasticity and clings to itself between turns without leaving adhesive on the cartons. Hand-wrapping a 1200 × 1000 mm pallet with a 1.5 m load takes about 44 m of film, so a 3.8 kg MPE38 roll (about 420 m) wraps around 9 pallets. Once output reaches dozens of pallets a day, a wrapping machine with powered pre-stretch gives even turns and steady tension, and uses less film per load.

Paper corner guards are V-shaped boards made from compressed kraft paper layers, set along the four vertical edges of the load before wrapping. They replace wooden or plastic edge boards; because they cover the corner, film tension no longer crushes the cartons and the load stacks more steadily. ICD makes the ICD-NLV1008B1 paper corner guard to the edge size, thickness and length of each load. The guide to paper angle boards and edge protectors explains the names buyers abroad use for them.
4. Bracing and moisture control when stuffing a container
For export cargo, the biggest risks sit inside the container: cargo shifting as the ship rolls, and moisture condensing on the walls when day and night temperatures swing. Air dunnage bags deal with the first. The flat bag goes into the gap between pallet rows or by the doors, then is inflated and presses the cargo tight. Size the bag to the measured gap: the gap must not be wider than the bag.

Kraft paper bags suit general cargo; woven PP bags resist abrasion better against sharp edges and wooden pallets and can be reused. Slip sheets solve a different problem, space: a kraftliner sheet 0.9-1.5 mm thick replaces the pallet base, so the height a pallet would take is used for cargo. In return, both the loading and the receiving warehouse need a forklift with a push-pull attachment; the comparison of slip sheets and pallets sets out when each one is the better choice.
AbsorGel container bags and blankets use over 94% calcium chloride mixed with modified starch, absorb more than 300% of their own weight and turn into a gel, which limits leaking onto the cargo. Inside cartons, use small packets of 2-125 g; inside the container, hang Hanging-C bags in the wall corrugations or lay Blanket-C blankets on top of the load. Exporters who want less plastic can choose AbsorTerra clay packets in a kraft paper casing.

5. Estimating supplies for one 40 ft container
Example: a standard 40 ft dry container (40ft DC) with 20 hand-wrapped pallets of 1200 × 1000 mm, 1.5 m tall. Rates come from ICD product specifications; real quantities vary with route, season and cargo.
| Supply | How it is worked out | Quantity | Reference price |
|---|---|---|---|
| MPE38 hand roll 3.8 kg | About 44 m per pallet, about 9 pallets per roll | 3 rolls | 145,000 VND a roll |
| Paper corner guards | 4 per pallet, one on each vertical edge | 80 pieces | By size |
| Kraft paper dunnage bags | Fill 15-30 cm gaps between pallet rows | 12-16 bags of 80×120 cm and 2 bags of 100×180 cm | On request |
| Hanging-C 1.0 kg desiccant bags | Hung along the container walls | 9-14 bags | On request |
| Blanket-C 2.0 kg desiccant blankets | Laid on top of the load instead of hanging bags | 4-7 blankets | On request |
| 1.5 mm slip sheets (if pallets are dropped) | 1 sheet per load of 300-500 kg | 20 sheets | On request |
Before ordering, count how many loads fit in one container using the guide on how to load pallets into a container.
6. Wrapping cartons, long goods and luggage
Not every load sits on a pallet: e-commerce warehouses wrap single cartons on the ICD-DBC800, and long products such as pipes and aluminium profiles pass through the 800 mm ring of the ICD-SW-S800E horizontal wrapper. Airports and bus terminals use the ICD-LP600F-L, which wraps 15-25 bags an hour.

9. Frequently asked questions about packaging supplies
1. What are packaging supplies?
They are the machines and materials used to wrap, secure, brace and dry goods in storage and transit: stretch film, wrapping machines, corner guards, slip sheets, air dunnage bags and desiccants.
2. What is the difference between packaging supplies and packaging materials?
The terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly, packaging materials are consumables such as film, paper and bags, while packaging supplies also include equipment such as wrapping machines.
3. What types of packaging materials are used in logistics?
The main types are stretch film for pallet wrapping, paper corner guards (also called edge protectors or angle boards), slip sheets as a pallet replacement, air dunnage bags to fill gaps in containers and trucks, and desiccants against container rain.
4. What packaging material do I need for export in a shipping container?
At a minimum: stretch film and corner guards to hold each load, air dunnage bags to fill the gaps between pallet rows, and desiccants for sea routes.
5. Do these packaging materials need fumigation for export?
The ISPM 15 standard covers wood packaging made from raw wood, including wooden dunnage, and does not cover processed wood such as plywood. Paper slip sheets and corner guards, stretch film, dunnage bags and desiccants are not raw wood; raw wooden pallets in the same shipment still need ISPM 15 treatment. Check the importing country’s own rules too.
6. How many dunnage bags and desiccants does a 20 ft container need?
A 20 ft container holding 10 pallets of 1000 × 1200 mm with 15-25 cm gaps needs about 6-10 dunnage bags of 80 × 120 cm and about 10-22 Hanging-C 0.5 kg desiccant bags, depending on route and cargo.
7. Can a slip sheet replace a pallet?
Yes, for container exports, if each load weighs 300-500 kg on a 1.5 mm sheet and both the loading and receiving warehouses have forklifts with a push-pull attachment. A warehouse without one still needs pallets.
8. Are there eco-friendly packaging materials?
Yes. Kraftliner slip sheets are 100% recyclable, AbsorTerra clay desiccants come in kraft paper with no plastic, and woven PP dunnage bags can be reused many times.
9. Should I wrap pallets by hand or buy a stretch wrapping machine?
Hand wrapping suits a few pallets a day and needs only film and a hand dispenser (850,000 VND). At dozens of pallets a day, a semi-automatic turntable such as the T1650F (45,000,000 VND) wraps more evenly.
10. How long do desiccants last?
In an unopened box stored at no more than 60% humidity and 5-25 °C, AbsorGel desiccants keep for 3 years from the production date and AbsorTerra clay packets for 1 year.
