The AbsorTerra is a natural montmorillonite clay desiccant packet in FSC kraft paper, with no plastic, in sizes from 2 g to 528 g (1/16 to 16 units) placed in cartons, boxes and crates. Its absorption capacity is 20% to 30% of weight under DIN 55473. It suits exporters who need a plastic-free moisture solution, in line with the trend toward reduced-plastic packaging.

What a unit is

The packaging industry measures clay desiccant by "units", where 1 unit equals 33 g. A 66 g packet is 2 units and a 528 g packet is 16 units. This conversion allows a quick comparison between packet sizes.

When the AbsorTerra suits

  • A plastic-free requirement: FSC kraft paper casing, the packet contains no plastic.
  • Moderate humidity and cool temperature: clay absorbs well at 30% to 60% relative humidity, suited to cartons and boxes of dry goods.
  • Precision mechanical goods, parts, metal: protects components in the carton from moisture and rust.
  • Garments and footwear: place the packet right against the goods; the clean paper casing leaves no marks.

For long transport through hot, humid tropical regions, the absorption capacity of clay (20% to 30%) is much lower than calcium chloride. In that case choose the Pouch-S calcium chloride packet or the Hanging-C hanging bag. The full analysis is in types of desiccant and how to choose.

Installation and dosing

Remove the sealed plastic wrap and place the packet in the carton right before closing. The packet works as soon as the wrap is opened.

The manufacturer gives no fixed dosing table because the amount needed depends on transit time, climate, the volume of air in the carton, the type of packaging and the type of goods. Send the carton size, the type of goods and the shipping route to ICD to calculate the number and size of packets.

Safety and disposal

Montmorillonite clay is a natural material. Still keep it away from children and pets and do not eat it. Dispose of it under local regulations, avoiding pouring it into drains and water sources. The box has a QR code linking to the SDS and an instruction video.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AbsorTerra made of?

Natural montmorillonite clay, packed in FSC-certified (mix) kraft paper with no plastic.

How much moisture does the AbsorTerra absorb?

About 20% to 30% of the packet weight under DIN 55473. That is lower than calcium chloride (over 250% to 300% in real conditions), so it suits cartons and boxes in moderate climates more than long, hot, humid sea routes.

How many grams is 1 AbsorTerra unit?

1 unit equals 33 g. A 66 g packet is 2 units and a 528 g packet is 16 units.

How long is the AbsorTerra shelf life?

1 year from the production date (unopened box, warehouse humidity max 60%, temperature 5 to 25 °C).

Can the AbsorTerra be reused?

A packet that has absorbed moisture in a shipping carton should not be reused for another shipment because its saturation level cannot be controlled. Learn more in how to reuse desiccant beads.
