ICD Vietnam supplies Absortech desiccants for export containers and cartons: hanging bags and blankets with gel-forming calcium chloride (AbsorGel Hanging-C, Blanket-C), calcium chloride packets for cartons (Pouch-S, D, X) and plastic-free clay packets in kraft paper (AbsorTerra). Calcium chloride over 94% mixed with starch absorbs over 300% of its weight in real conditions, works from -20 °C to 70 °C and has a 3-year shelf life. A 40ft container on a long route with dry cargo needs about 11 Hanging-C 1.0 kg bags.
Absortech is a Swedish desiccant brand founded in 1996. This page brings together 7 product lines, a comparison table, dosing tables for 20ft and 40ft containers, how to choose the right type, and quotes per order.
Choose a desiccant when:
- Cargo goes by sea for 30 days or more: container rain causes mold, rust and damaged packaging even when the cargo was packed sealed.
- Cargo is moisture-sensitive: agricultural products, timber, paper, garments, footwear, electronic components and metal.
- You need a substitute or complement to VCI: calcium chloride Pouch packets are used instead of VCI anti-corrosion in some industries.
Range of 7 ICD desiccant lines

Choose by where the desiccant goes: hung or laid in a container, or placed inside a carton or package. Click a line to see its specifications, product codes and dosing.
Quick decision guide by placement:
- Hang on a container wall with lashing rings: use the Hanging-C 1.0 kg or Hanging-C 0.5 kg.
- Cargo stacked against the roof, refrigerated containers, no rings: use the Blanket-C 2.0 kg.
- Cartons and large packages: use the Pouch-S or Pouch-X.
- Small boxes, packets lying against the goods: use the Pouch-D.
- Plastic-free packaging requirement: use the AbsorTerra.
Comparison of the 7 desiccant lines
Specifications follow the Absortech datasheet. The desiccant is calcium chloride over 94% mixed with starch (AbsorGel) or montmorillonite clay (AbsorTerra).

|---|---|---|---|
| Hanging-C 1.0 kg | 1.0 kg | Over 300% | 180 x 1,620 x 25 mm, hung vertically, 3 years |
| Hanging-C 0.5 kg | 0.5 kg | Over 300% | 180 x 840 x 25 mm, hung vertically, 3 years |
| Blanket-C 2.0 kg | 2.0 kg | Over 300% | 530 x 1,090 x 10 mm, laid flat, 3 years |
| Pouch-S | 25, 50, 100, 125 g | Over 250% | Packets 110 x 125 to 150 x 190 mm, in-box, 3 years |
| Pouch-D | 2, 5, 10, 25, 50 g | 200% to 250% | Two layers, 55 x 88 to 95 x 190 mm, 3 years |
| Pouch-X | 100, 125 g | Over 300% | Packet 145 x 145 mm, origin Sweden, 3 years |
| AbsorTerra | 2 g to 528 g | 20% to 30% | FSC kraft paper, 45 x 35 to 220 x 135 mm, 1 year |
Absorption in real conditions depends on temperature and humidity. In a climate chamber with prolonged high temperature and humidity, the manufacturer states calcium chloride can exceed 350%.

The actual quantity depends on transit time, climate, the volume of air in the container, the packaging and the type of cargo. ICD calculates the exact number once it has your shipment details.
Calcium chloride, silica gel and clay compared
The three common desiccant groups differ clearly in capacity, working temperature and reusability. Silica gel and clay figures follow Multisorb (25 °C, 50% relative humidity), calcium chloride follows Absortech.
| Criterion | Gel calcium chloride (AbsorGel) | Silica gel | Clay (AbsorTerra) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Absorption | Over 300% of weight | About 30% | About 25% (20 to 30% under DIN 55473) |
| Working range | High humidity, -20 to 70 °C | 40 to 70% RH, moderate temperature | 30 to 60% RH, cool climates |
| Form after absorbing | Gel, limits dripping | Dry beads | Dry beads |
| Reuse | No, single use | Yes, can be dried again | Limited |
| Main use | Sea containers, long routes | Cartons, pharmaceuticals, electronics | Cartons, boxes, plastic-free packaging |

4 questions to choose the right desiccant
1. How long is the cargo in transit, and through which climate zones?
Sea routes of 30 to 60 days or through hot, humid regions need a large capacity such as gel calcium chloride.
2. Is the cargo in small cartons or a whole container?
Cartons and packages use packets from 2 g to 528 g, whole containers use hanging bags or blankets.
3. Does the container have lashing rings, and is the cargo stacked to the roof?
With rings: Hanging-C bags. Cargo to the roof, no rings, or a refrigerated container: Blanket-C blankets.
4. Is there a plastic-free or recyclable packaging requirement?
Choose AbsorTerra in FSC kraft paper. For AbsorGel, the AbsorHook and AbsorStick are recycled PP plastic and can be detached and sorted for recycling.

Frequently asked questions about desiccants
1. How many desiccant bags does a 40ft container need?
According to the manufacturer’s table: 9 to 14 Hanging-C 1.0 kg bags or 4 to 7 Blanket-C blankets, depending on a 30 or 60 day route and dry or humid cargo. ICD recalculates for the actual shipment.
2. Does a container desiccant leak water?
The calcium chloride in AbsorGel turns into a gel thanks to the modified starch, which limits dripping. Still hang the bag vertically, leave a 25 mm gap to the cargo and do not let the bag tear.
3. How does AbsorGel differ from silica gel?
AbsorGel uses calcium chloride that absorbs over 300% of its weight in real conditions, silica gel about 30% at 50% humidity. Calcium chloride is single use, silica gel can be dried and reused.
4. Can desiccants be used in a refrigerated container?
Yes. The manufacturer states the Blanket-C suits refrigerated containers and trailers with no lashing rings.
5. What is the shelf life of a desiccant packet?
AbsorGel 3 years and AbsorTerra 1 year from the production date, with the box unopened, humidity at most 60% and 5 to 25 °C.
6. Is desiccant safe?
Calcium chloride causes serious eye irritation (H319, under GHS), so wear gloves when handling and keep it away from small children. See what happens if you swallow a desiccant packet.
7. Does ICD supply the SDS and test reports?
The SDS can be supplied on request. The AbsorGel mixture has an SGS test report from September 2025 passing RoHS and REACH SVHC, plus Absortech declarations of REACH, RoHS, POPs and PPWR compliance.
