The AbsorGel Pouch-D is a two-layer calcium chloride desiccant packet (non-woven fabric and HDPE) in sizes from 2 g to 50 g, designed for small cartons and for positions in contact against the goods. The two casing layers suit packets that lie right against the goods. Calcium chloride (over 94%) mixed with starch absorbs 200% to 250% of its weight in real conditions and then forms a gel. For large cartons and wooden crates see the Pouch-S.

Why a second casing layer is needed

According to the manufacturer, the two-layer Pouch-D is preferred for small cartons and when the packet lies close to, and in direct contact with, the goods. For large cartons with little contact, the single-layer Pouch-S is the usual choice.

Applications

  • Small boxes and cartons: electronic components, spare parts, tools, samples, documents.
  • Garments, footwear, handbags: prevents mold and odor in sealed cartons on sea freight.
  • Metal and small machinery: limits rust, used alone or combined with VCI.

The manufacturer notes that in some industries the Pouch is used instead of VCI protection. If your goods already use VCI and still get mold, ask ICD about a combined solution.

Installation and dosing

Remove the sealed plastic wrap and place the packet in the carton right before taping it shut. The packet works as soon as it meets the air.

The manufacturer does not publish a fixed dosing table for packets inside cartons because the amount needed depends on transit time, climate, the volume of air in the carton, the type of packaging and the type of goods. Send ICD the carton size, the type of goods and the shipping route to calculate the right number of packets.

Safety

Calcium chloride causes serious eye irritation (H319, under GHS). Do not let it touch food directly. Learn more in what happens if you swallow a desiccant packet.

Frequently asked questions

What is the smallest Pouch-D size?

The smallest is 2 g (55 x 88 mm) and the largest 50 g (95 x 190 mm). The sizes in between are 5 g, 10 g and 25 g.

Can the Pouch-D be placed right against garments and footwear?

Yes. This is exactly the case where the manufacturer recommends the two-layer Pouch-D. Keep the packet intact and do not let a torn packet touch the goods.

Where should a desiccant packet go in a carton?

Place it above the goods or near a corner of the carton where air circulates, avoiding sitting on goods that scratch easily. The packet should be placed right before the carton is sealed.

Which absorbs moisture better, the Pouch-D or the Pouch-S?

Same desiccant. The main difference is the number of casing layers and the packet size. The Pouch-D leans toward small cartons and contact against the goods, the Pouch-S toward large cartons.
