Stretch Wrapping Machines

ICD Vietnam sells and rents stretch wrapping machines (pallet wrappers) in six groups: semi-automatic turntables, automatic turntables, battery-powered mobile robots, rotary arm wrappers, horizontal wrappers, and carton and luggage wrappers. The English catalogue lists 8 models, priced from 22,000,000 VND (ICD-DBC800 carton wrapper) and 45,000,000 VND (ICD-T1650F turntable pallet wrapper) up to 350,000,000 VND (Robopac ICD-TP3 and Robot S7); other models are quoted on request. ICD pallet wrappers handle loads of 1,000-2,000 kg and wrap loads up to 2,500 mm tall (up to 3,100 mm with the optional Robopac ICD-TP3 mast). Wrappers are part of ICD’s packaging supplies range, together with stretch film and dunnage bags.

1. What a stretch wrapping machine does and why it matters

A stretch wrapping machine winds LLDPE stretch film around goods stacked on a pallet, turning the load into one stable unit that does not shift while a forklift moves it, while it is loaded into a container or while it sits in storage. In Vietnam many buyers call it a shrink wrap machine, although the film it uses is stretch film, not heat-shrink film.

The machine replaces an operator walking round the pallet with a roll in hand. Motion comes in one of two ways: the load turns on a turntable while the film carriage only travels up and down, or the load stays still while the film travels round it (robots and rotary arms). The main parts are the turntable, the mast and film carriage, the tensioning unit, the control cabinet and the height sensor; how they work together through one wrap cycle is described in pallet stretch wrapper structure and operating principle.

2. ICD’s six machine groups and how they differ

Narrow the group down with two questions first: can the load sit on a turntable, and do you want an operator at the machine for every cycle? Compare prices only after the group is settled.

Semi-automatic turntable. The most common choice for small and mid-sized warehouses. The operator attaches the film tail to the pallet, presses start, then cuts and tucks the film at the end of the cycle. The ICD-X0MS runs on 220V with a 1,500-2,400 mm turntable, 1,500 kg load capacity and 2,000 mm wrap height, at about 30 loads an hour. On the same frame, the ICD-X0PS adds a 250% powered pre-stretch, so it uses less film. The difference between the two levels of automation is covered in detail in automatic vs semi-automatic stretch wrapper.

Automatic turntable. The machine clamps the film tail, measures load height and cuts the film by itself; the operator only drives the pallet in and out. The ICD-T1650FZ wraps 30-50 pallets an hour, carries 2,000 kg, takes loads up to 1200×1200×2400 mm and needs compressed air at 0.4-0.8 MPa. The Ultra Wrap ICD-2000 BF wraps loads up to 2,500 mm tall with adjustable pre-stretch up to 250%. Where a conveyor link is needed, the ICD-T1800FZ-PL has a 1,800 mm turntable fed by conveyors and runs on 380V. The Italian-made option is the Robopac Masterplat Plus ICD-TP3, with a 2,000 kg load (2,500 kg optional) and 2,200 mm wrap height, extendable to 3,100 mm.

Mobile wrapping robot. The robot drives itself round a load that stays still, so it can wrap loads that are too heavy, oversized or unsuitable for a turntable, and it can be taken to several points in a warehouse. The ICD-Maxgo runs on 2×12V 107Ah batteries for about 8 hours per charge and wraps loads up to 2,100 mm tall. The ICD-XT4550 accepts pallets from 600×600 mm with no limit on load size or weight. The top of the range is the Robopac Robot S7.

Rotary arm. The film mast rotates round a load that stands still on a conveyor, which suits end-of-line packing and loads that are unstable when spun. The ICD-R1800FZ-PL wraps loads 500-1,800 mm tall; the machine itself stands 3,500 mm high, so the site needs surveying before ordering. The ICD-XT4512 belongs to the same group and wraps pallets up to 1,600 mm tall.

Horizontal (orbital) wrapper. A wrapping ring orbits long products as they pass through on rollers: aluminium bars, pipes, doors, boards. The ICD-SW-S800E has an 800 mm ring, takes products up to 600 mm in diameter at any length and pre-stretches film up to 200%.

Carton and luggage wrappers. These are the mini machines for small packages. The ICD-DBC800 wraps cartons up to 800×600×600 mm and costs 22,000,000 VND. The ICD-XT4508 wraps suitcases and luggage (800 mm turntable, 60 kg load), alongside the ICD-LP600F-L luggage wrapping machine.

The table below sets the groups side by side on the criteria that usually decide the choice:

4. Choosing a machine by output, power supply and load

Pallets per day. Rated speeds of semi-automatic and automatic machines are fairly close (ICD-X0MS about 30 loads an hour, ICD-T1650FZ 30-50 pallets an hour). The difference is that a semi-automatic machine needs someone beside it to attach and cut the film on every load, while an automatic one does not. A warehouse wrapping a few dozen pallets a day usually needs only a semi-automatic turntable; once pallets come off a production line continuously, an automatic machine with conveyors is what frees up the operator.

Power supply. The ICD-X0MS, ICD-X0PS and ICD-X100 run on 220V, so they work in plants without three-phase power. The ICD-T1800FZ-PL and ICD-SW-S800E need 380V three-phase, and the ICD-T1650FZ also needs compressed air. Battery robots only need a 220V socket for charging.

Load height. Most turntable machines wrap loads 2,000-2,100 mm tall. Taller loads need a 2,400 mm mast (ICD-T1650FM), the ICD-2000 BF (2,500 mm) or the Robopac ICD-TP3 with an optional 2,800-3,100 mm mast.

Load size and weight. ICD turntables carry 1,000-2,000 kg depending on the model. Heavier, oversized or top-heavy loads that may tip when spun (IBC tanks, drums, machinery) are better wrapped by a robot or rotary arm, so the load stays still. The full set of selection criteria, from load profile to film type, is laid out in how to choose the right stretch wrapping machine.

5. Pre-stretch, stretch film and running costs

The largest cost after buying the machine is stretch film, and the figure that drives it is the pre-stretch ratio. Two rollers in the film carriage turn at different speeds to elongate the film before it touches the load: at 250%, 1 metre of film from the roll becomes 3.5 metres on the load. Pallet stretch film can be stretched about 500% before breaking and is typically used at 100-300%, while hand wrapping only stretches film by about 5-10%.

Film used per sample pallet, 1,000×1,200 mm and 1.5 m tall (theoretical)

Hand wrapping, film stretched 5-10%

about 425 g

Machine with 250% pre-stretch

about 135 g

Both figures assume the same number of revolutions and the same overlap; film drawn from the roll equals the film length on the load divided by (1 + pre-stretch ratio). This is a theoretical calculation, and real consumption also depends on film tension and the number of reinforcing wraps. To turn film length into weight and cost for your own loads, use the formula and free calculator in how to calculate PE film weight.

High pre-stretch machines need good-quality machine film; poor film tears as it passes over the rollers. ICD supplies PE stretch film for pallet wrapping in 500 mm machine rolls, delivered with the machine order.

6. Stretch wrapping machines by industry

Food, beverage and consumer goods plants pack many identical pallets every day, which suits automatic turntables such as the ICD-T1650FZ or ICD-2000 BF, linked to conveyors when output is high. Chemicals and lubricants come in IBC tanks and drums that are hard to place on a turntable, so these plants usually choose a mobile robot. Distribution and logistics warehouses with scattered wrapping points also use robots. Garment, agricultural and building supply businesses with moderate output and single-phase power usually start with the ICD-X0MS or ICD-X0PS. Aluminium, pipe and door makers use the ICD-SW-S800E horizontal wrapper; shops and e-commerce warehouses use carton wrappers; airports use luggage wrappers. A sector-by-sector look at the gains is in benefits of stretch wrapping machines by industry.

7. Installation, warranty and machine rental

ICD Vietnam technician installing a pallet wrapping machine in a customer's warehouse

A turntable machine sits on a flat concrete floor with no foundation work; ICD technicians install it, run trials and train operators in your warehouse. Where a hand pallet truck cannot get loads onto a raised turntable, the turntable can be pit-mounted flush with the floor, or you can choose the M-type ICD-T1650FM-M, whose M-shaped base lets the truck forks slide straight in. Mobile robots need no fixed installation, only battery charging and sensor setup. Rotary arm machines and conveyor-linked machines need a site survey before ordering.

Every ICD stretch wrapping machine comes with a manufacturer warranty, with the term stated on the quotation for each model. For seasonal businesses or buyers who want to test a machine before buying, ICD rents machines for 3-12 months; the rental fee is quoted by model and rental period.

9. Frequently asked questions about stretch wrapping machines

1. How much does a pallet wrapping machine cost?

In ICD’s English catalogue, turntable pallet wrappers cost 45-75 million VND (ICD-T1650F, ICD-T1650FM-M), the conveyor-fed ICD-T1800FZ-PL 150 million VND, and the Robopac ICD-TP3 and Robot S7 350 million VND; the ICD-DBC800 carton wrapper costs 22 million VND. Other models are quoted on request, and the final price depends on the turntable, mast and conveyor configuration.

2. What is the HS code for a pallet stretch wrapping machine?

Pallet wrapping machines are declared under HS code 8422.40.00 (other packing or wrapping machinery), with a 0% preferential import duty under Decree 26/2023/ND-CP. Spare parts are declared under 8422.90.90. The reasoning, and why 8422.30 does not apply, is in stretch wrapping machine HS code and import duty.

3. What is the difference between a semi-automatic and an automatic stretch wrapper?

A semi-automatic machine needs an operator to attach the film tail, then cut and tuck it on every load; an automatic machine clamps and cuts the film itself and is often linked to conveyors. Wrapping speed is similar, so the choice comes down to whether you want to remove the operator altogether.

4. Is a stretch wrap machine the same as a shrink wrap machine?

No. A stretch wrapping machine winds stretch film round the load at room temperature, and the film holds by its own elasticity. A shrink wrap machine covers goods with shrink film and then applies heat so the film contracts. All machines in this category are stretch wrappers.

5. Is there a mini or portable pallet wrapping machine?

Yes. ICD’s mini machines are the ICD-DBC800 for cartons up to 800×600×600 mm and the luggage wrappers. The portable options are battery-powered wrapping robots (ICD-Maxgo, ICD-XT4510, ICD-XT4550, Robot S7), which drive themselves round the load and can be moved to different points in the warehouse.

6. Can a pallet wrapping machine run on single-phase 220V power?

Yes, the ICD-X0MS, ICD-X0PS and ICD-X100 run on 220V. The ICD-T1800FZ-PL and ICD-SW-S800E need 380V three-phase power; battery robots only need a 220V socket for charging.

7. Which machine wraps pallets taller than 2 m?

Loads up to 2,400 mm use the tall-mast ICD-T1650FM, up to 2,500 mm the ICD-2000 BF; taller loads use the Robopac ICD-TP3 with an optional 2,800 or 3,100 mm mast.

8. Is there a pallet wrapping machine for 5,000 lb loads?

A 5,000 lb load is about 2,270 kg. ICD’s standard turntables carry 1,000-2,000 kg, and the Robopac ICD-TP3 can be specified with a 2,500 kg turntable. For heavier loads, a mobile robot or rotary arm wraps the load while it stands still, so turntable capacity no longer applies.

9. Do I need a ramp to load a pallet wrapping machine?

Not necessarily. Forklifts can place loads on a standard turntable directly. With hand pallet trucks, choose the M-type ICD-T1650FM-M, whose base lets the forks slide in, have the turntable pit-mounted flush with the floor, or use a mobile robot that needs no turntable at all.

10. Is hand wrapping cheaper than buying a stretch wrap machine?

Hand wrapping costs nothing for a machine, but it only stretches film by about 5-10%, so each pallet uses far more film than on a pre-stretch machine, and someone has to walk round every load. As daily pallet numbers grow, film and labour together usually exceed the cost of a machine; work it out from your own warehouse figures.

11. Can I rent or hire a pallet wrapping machine?

Yes. ICD rents machines for 3-12 months to seasonal businesses or buyers who want to try a machine before buying. The rental fee is quoted by model and period.

12. What stretch film does a wrapping machine use?

Pallet wrappers use 500 mm machine film (the ICD-X100 has a 750 mm option). Machines with 250% pre-stretch need LLDPE film with high elongation so it does not tear on the rollers; ICD advises on the film type for each model when the machine is delivered.

13. How long does installation take, and who handles service?

Turntable machines need no foundation; ICD technicians install them, run trials and train operators on site. Rotary arm and conveyor-linked machines need a site survey first. ICD’s technical team handles warranty service, maintenance and repairs.
