Understanding the structure and operating principle of a pallet stretch wrapper helps businesses operate more efficiently, spot early signs of failure and maintain it properly. This article analyzes in detail the 5 main parts and the working principle of both the semi-automatic and the fully automatic lines.
Pallet stretch wrapper structure - 5 main parts
Whether semi-automatic or fully automatic, a pallet stretch wrapper has 5 core parts. The difference lies in the level of automation of each part, not in the overall structure.
1. Turntable: A round load-bearing steel disc, usually 1200-1650mm in diameter, carrying 1,500-2,000kg. The top surface has anti-slip ribs so the pallet does not shift as the turntable rotates. Below the table is a belt system and an electric drive motor. The rotation speed is adjustable 0-12 rpm via an inverter.
2. Film carriage: An upright column mounted beside the turntable, with a height matching the maximum wrap height (usually 2,000-2,200mm). On the column is a PE film roll holder and a roller system to adjust film tension. On semi-automatic machines, the carriage is raised and lowered by hand or button. On automatic machines, the carriage raises and lowers itself per a pre-programmed routine.
3. Motor and drive system: Usually 2 separate motors: the turntable motor (0.55-0.75kW) and the carriage lift motor (0.18-0.37kW). An inverter adjusts motor speed, allowing flexible adjustment without jerking and without sudden force that could topple goods.
4. Control panel: From simple buttons (basic semi-automatic) to a touchscreen storing programs (high-end automatic). The basic adjustable parameters: turntable speed, number of wrap turns at the top/middle/bottom, wrap height, film tension.
5. Support frame and machine body: A welded steel structure with anti-corrosion powder coating. The design must keep the machine stable when the table carries a heavy load at maximum rotation speed. For the mobile line (Y1650F), the frame is designed lighter and integrates lockable wheels.
Basic operating principle
The cycle of wrapping 1 pallet follows the sequence: place the pallet on the table → fix the film end to the pallet foot → start → the turntable rotates the pallet while the carriage holds the film roll stationary → PE film wraps in a spiral from bottom to top → end of cycle, the carriage lowers and wraps a few more turns at the foot to reinforce → stop, cut the film, secure the film end.
During this process, film tension is the most important technical parameter. Tension that is too high crushes goods or breaks the film. Tension that is too low fails to hold the pallet firmly. Setting the right tension for the goods type is a key operating skill that ICD trains the customer’s staff on during the installation day.
The pre-stretch system - the part that makes the big difference
High-end fully automatic machines add a pre-stretch unit between the film roll and the point where it wraps the pallet. This system has 2 rollers rotating at different speeds: the output roller rotates faster than the input roller, stretching the film before wrapping.
200% pre-stretch means the film is stretched to 3 times its original length before wrapping the pallet. 1 meter of original film → 3 meters of film after stretching. The result: saving 50-70% of PE film compared with a machine without pre-stretch, while the stretched film has higher cling and holding force than unstretched film.
Structural difference: semi-automatic vs fully automatic
| Part | Semi-automatic | Fully automatic |
|---|---|---|
| Turntable | Electric motor + inverter | Electric motor + inverter (same) |
| Film carriage | Manual or button lift | Automatic lift per program |
| Film-end clamp | Staff clamp by hand | Automatic pneumatic clamp |
| Film cutting | Staff tear by hand | Automatic heat or mechanical blade |
| Pre-stretch | None or low | Yes, 150-300% |
| Control panel | Simple buttons | Programmable screen, stores programs |
Periodic maintenance - the points to check
A pallet stretch wrapper has fewer maintenance points than complex packaging machines, but skipping maintenance still leads to early failure and high repair costs.
Weekly: check the tension of the turntable drive belt (too loose makes the table slip, too tight wears it fast), lubricate the carriage slide rail with industrial grease, check the film-tension adjustment roller.
Monthly: check connecting screws and bolts, especially the bolts fixing the turntable to the frame (continuous vibration can loosen them). Clean the control panel and check wiring connections. Check the wear of the pre-stretch roller (if any).
Q&A about stretch wrapper structure
Q: Why does the stretch wrapper vibrate strongly when running?
A: Strong vibration is usually due to one of 3 causes: (1) The pallet is not centered on the turntable, creating an off-center force; (2) The turntable is loose from the support frame; (3) The drive belt is worn or loose. Check in this order before calling a technician.
Q: The turntable motor gets too hot - is it broken?
A: An electric motor running slightly warm is normal, especially during continuous operation. If the motor housing temperature exceeds 70-80°C (too hot to touch for long), it may be motor overload (pallet heavier than rated) or a cooling fan clogged with dust. Clean the fan and check the load first.
Q: PE film keeps breaking while wrapping - is it the machine or the film?
A: 80% of cases are due to film tension set too high for the thickness of film in use. Lower the tension by 1-2 levels and try again. If it still breaks, check whether the adjustment roller is jammed or has a chipped edge.
