8 Common Stretch Wrap Machine Faults and How to Fix Them

June 13, 2026 — Lê Văn Thăng

8 common pallet wrapper faults - film breaks, uneven wrap, vibration, hot motor and more - with step-by-step fixes and when to call a technician.

8 Common Stretch Wrap Machine Faults and How to Fix Them

Reviewed and updated by ICD - Week 24/2026

Quick summary:

  • 8 common faults: film breaks, uneven wrap, machine vibration, hot motor, turntable won’t turn, film won’t cling, mast won’t rise, machine won’t start.
  • About 80% of faults come from wrong operation or missed maintenance - not a broken machine.
  • You can fix yourself: film breaks, uneven wrap, film not clinging.
  • Call a technician for: inverter errors, motor noise, abnormal vibration after checking the pallet.

Common stretch wrap machine faults and how to fix them

Most pallet wrapper problems are not natural breakdowns - they come from wrong operation, wrong film specs, or skipped maintenance. Understanding the cause lets you fix it on the spot without waiting for a technician. Below are the 8 most common faults with specific fixes. To choose the right machine in the first place, see our stretch wrapping machines range.

Fault 1: Stretch film breaks while wrapping

The most common fault. Causes, in order of probability: (1) film tension set too high for the film thickness - lower the tension 1-2 steps on the adjuster; (2) film too thin for the goods - use thicker film (from 17 up to 20-23 micron); (3) the tension roller has a chipped, sharp edge - check by hand and replace if there is a sharp point; (4) poor-quality film with weak spots in the roll - try a different roll. The right stretch film for the load prevents most breaks.

Fault 2: Uneven wrap with open corners

Cause: the turntable speed does not match the film-mast lift speed, so each wrap overlaps the previous one by less than 30% of film width. Fix: lower the turntable speed or raise the mast lift speed (on a semi-automatic, raise the mast more slowly). Re-check - each wrap should overlap 40-50% of the previous one.

Fault 3: Strong vibration when running

Main cause: the pallet is off-center on the turntable, creating an eccentric force as it spins. Check and re-center the pallet first. If it still vibrates: check whether the drive belt is loose (press a finger to the belt center - over 20 mm of give is too loose); check whether the turntable bolts are loose. Do not keep running the machine while it vibrates hard - stop and fix it immediately.

Fault 4: Turntable motor overheats

Mild warmth (40-50C) is normal. Too hot (cannot hold a hand on it, over 70C): (1) check the load - is the pallet over the rated capacity? Reduce load or speed; (2) clean the motor’s cooling fan - dust blocking the fan is a common cause; (3) the machine has run too long without rest - give the motor 15-20 minutes’ rest every 4-6 hours. If still hot, call a technician to check the motor winding.

Fault 5: Turntable won’t turn or turns weakly

Check in order: (1) the circuit breaker - has it tripped? (2) the EMERGENCY STOP button - is it pressed? (twist to release); (3) the inverter - does the screen show an error? (note the error code for the technician); (4) the drive belt - is it broken? (look through the gap to see if the belt is there).

Fault 6: Stretch film won’t cling to itself

Stretch film sticks by its natural tack, not glue. If it won’t cling: the film surface has dust or oil on it (use a new roll); the roll has sat too long or in high heat and lost its tack (use a fresher roll); or the film is poor quality (try another supplier).

Fault 7: Film mast won’t rise

On a semi-automatic: check whether the mast up/down control switch works. On an automatic: check the mast position sensors (usually limit switches at the bottom and top of travel). Lubricate the mast slide rail if the mast moves stiffly - grease the rail immediately if it runs heavy but is not jammed.

Fault 8: Machine won’t start even with power on

Check: whether 220V power reaches the machine (use a test pen); whether the fuse in the control box has blown; whether the EMERGENCY STOP has been released; whether the timer or safety sensor shows an error (read the indicator lights on the control panel). If you cannot find the cause, call ICD technical support - do not open the control box without electrical knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the single most common wrapper fault?

Film breaking, usually from tension set too high for the film thickness. Lowering tension a step or two fixes most cases.

How much should each wrap overlap?

40-50% of the film width. Less than 30% leaves open corners and weak containment.

When is a hot motor a real problem?

Mild warmth (40-50C) is fine. Above about 70C, check the load, clean the cooling fan, and rest the motor; if still hot, call a technician.

When should I stop and call a technician?

For inverter error codes, abnormal motor noise, or vibration that persists after re-centering the pallet - and never open the electrical box without proper knowledge.
