Tyre wrapping machines: why tyres need a dedicated wrapper, the 3 types (single, pallet, horizontal), industry uses, and hand vs machine.

Tyre Wrapping Machines: A Specialized Packaging Solution

Reviewed and updated by ICD - Week 29/2026

A tyre wrapping machine is a specialised stretch wrapper that bundles tyres with film for storage, transport and dust protection. It wraps the tyre around its circumference, keeping pairs or stacks together and clean - widely used by tyre makers, retailers and logistics firms.

Quick summary:

  • A tyre wrapping machine wraps PE film around each tyre or a pallet of tyres, protecting them in storage and transit.
  • Three types: single-tyre (vertical) wrappers, tyre-pallet wrappers, and horizontal line wrappers.
  • Uses: tyre factories, tyre dealers, auto-parts warehouses, and tyre export.
  • Versus hand wrapping, a machine cuts time from minutes to 10-20 seconds per tyre and labor by about 90%.

Tyre wrapping machines: a specialized packaging solution

A tyre is an awkward shape - round, donut-like - that does not suit a standard pallet wrapper. The auto and tyre-distribution industries use dedicated wrapping solutions, from wrapping single tyres to wrapping whole tyre pallets for bulk dispatch. See the broader stretch wrapping machines range.

Why tyres need a dedicated wrapper

Tyres differ from normal warehouse goods: round, with a complex tread pattern, 5-50 kg each, usually stacked or stood upright. A turntable pallet wrapper handles square loads well but is inefficient for individual round tyres. Protecting tyres matters because dust and grease lodge in the tread and are hard to clean, UV ages the rubber fast, and tyre-to-tyre contact scratches the tread. A PE film wrap blocks all of these.

Types of tyre wrapping machine

  • Single-tyre wrapper: designed for individual tyres. The tyre stands upright and the machine applies a PE film band vertically or in a spiral around its circumference. Throughput 3-6 tyres a minute. Suits tyre dealers and auto-parts shops wrapping each tyre before storage.
  • Tyre-pallet wrapper: a variant of a standard pallet wrapper, optimized for stacked tyre pallets, usually with a larger turntable (1,800-2,000 mm instead of 1,650 mm) to hold a 2-3 row tyre pallet, wrapping the whole pallet.
  • Horizontal tyre wrapper: the tyre lies flat on a conveyor and passes through a film ring. Used in large tyre factories integrated at the end of the line, 10-20 tyres a minute.

Real-world applications

  • Tyre factories (Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental): high-speed automatic machines at the end of the line, wrapping each finished tyre before it enters the warehouse.
  • Tier-1 distributors: semi-automatic machines wrapping single tyres or sets of four before dispatch to tier-2 dealers or garages.
  • Spare-tyre stores: protecting unfitted spare tyres, especially in outdoor or temperature-uncontrolled storage.

Hand wrapping vs machine

Criterion Hand wrapping Tyre wrapper
Time 3-5 min/tyre 10-20 sec/tyre
Tension Uneven, operator-dependent Consistent
Labor 1-4 hours/day for 20-50 tyres About 90% less

For a dealer selling 20-50 tyres a day, hand wrapping is 1-4 labor-hours a day on wrapping alone; a machine repays quickly at mid-size scale and up.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why not use a normal pallet wrapper for tyres?

A turntable wrapper handles square loads well but is inefficient for round, individual tyres - dedicated single-tyre or horizontal wrappers fit the shape.

Which type suits a tyre dealer?

A semi-automatic single-tyre wrapper for individual tyres, or a tyre-pallet wrapper for sets dispatched on pallets.

Why wrap tyres at all?

To block dust and grease in the tread, slow UV ageing of the rubber, and prevent tread scratches from tyre-to-tyre contact.

How much faster is a machine?

10-20 seconds per tyre versus 3-5 minutes by hand, cutting labor about 90%.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tyre wrapping machine for?
It wraps stretch film around tyres to keep them clean, bundled and easy to handle in storage and transport.

Can it wrap single and paired tyres?
Yes; models handle individual tyres or bundled pairs/stacks of different diameters.

Why wrap tyres instead of bagging?
Film wrapping is faster, cheaper per unit and holds the bundle tightly without loose bags.

Tyre wrapping machine specifications

A tyre wrapping machine uses an orbital (ring-type) mechanism to feed film through the central bore of the tyre. The specification range below is compiled from common industrial tyre wrappers on the market, helping tyre dealers and warehouses compare configurations against tyre diameter and output volume.

Specification Reference range
Wrappable tyre diameter (outer) 250 - 1,250 mm (up to about 33 inch)
Inner diameter (rim bore) 200 - 500 mm
PE film width 125 / 250 / 500 mm
Ring rotation speed up to 200 rpm
Motor power around 2 kW (ring motor + roller motor)
Power supply 380V / 50Hz (3-phase)
Output capacity 3 - 20 tyres/min depending on model

Why tyres need a dedicated wrapping machine

A tyre is a ring-shaped object with a hollow centre, completely different from a square box packed on a pallet. A standard pallet wrapper can only wrap the outer surface and cannot thread the film through the rim bore to fully enclose the rubber cross-section. This is why a machine with a dedicated ring mechanism is needed for tyres.

  • Wrapping through the ring centre: the film ring passes through the central hole of the tyre, fully covering both the tread and the sidewalls in a single cycle - something a pallet wrapper cannot do.
  • Maintaining round form: film tension is distributed evenly around the circumference, so the tyre does not deform when stacked high in storage.
  • Protection from dust, oil and UV: the film seals the rubber surface, limiting ageing and dirt build-up on the tread - reducing cleaning work before sale.
  • Suited to tyre dealers and warehouses: for tyre shops, distribution warehouses or retreading workshops, a tyre wrapper increases packing speed to dozens of tyres per minute instead of wrapping each one by hand.

This ring mechanism is fundamentally different from a standard pallet stretch wrapping machine - which rotates a turntable or arm around a vertical axis to wrap block-shaped loads.

Frequently asked questions

What tyre diameter can a tyre wrapping machine handle?

Typically from 250 mm to 1,250 mm outer diameter (about 33 inch), covering motorbike, car and some light-truck tyres. Large truck tyres or off-road tyres require a separate large-format ring machine. The wrappable rim bore diameter is usually in the 200 - 500 mm range.

Why not use a pallet wrapper to wrap tyres?

Because a tyre is a ring-shaped object with a hollow centre. A pallet wrapper only covers the outer surface and cannot thread the film through the centre hole, so it cannot fully seal the rubber cross-section. A tyre wrapper uses a ring that passes through the centre of the tyre, sealing both the tread and the sidewalls in a single cycle.

How many tyres per minute can a tyre wrapper handle?

Depending on the model, output ranges from 3 to 20 tyres/min. Semi-automatic models reach around 3 - 6 tyres/min, suited to dealers and tyre shops; high-speed automatic models reach 10 - 20 tyres/min, suited to distribution warehouses and high-volume factories.
