What Is PE Food Wrap Film?

PE food wrap is typically made from LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene) or LLDPE (Linear Low-Density Polyethylene). The key safety point: PE is manufactured without plasticizers - its flexibility is a natural property of the LDPE/LLDPE polymer, not the result of additives.

Standard PE food wrap specifications: 10-15 microns thick, small rolls of 30cm x 30m or 45cm x 30m for household and restaurant use; wider industrial rolls for packaging machines. Virgin PE has no odor, no taste, and is uniformly transparent. Under FDA (US) and EU standards, virgin LDPE/LLDPE meets the requirements for direct food contact and is recognized under Vietnam’s QCVN 09-1:2011/BYT issued by the Ministry of Health.

Important note: PE food wrap (cling wrap) and PE stretch film for pallet wrapping are both called “PE film” but are completely different products. Pallet stretch film is 17-23 microns thick, weighs 7-23 kg per roll, and is designed for mechanical tension - it does not meet food contact standards. Never use industrial stretch film to wrap food.

What Is PVC Food Wrap - And Why Does It Require Caution?

PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) in its natural state is hard and brittle - it cannot be made into thin flexible wrap without additives. To produce soft, clingy PVC film, manufacturers must add plasticizers. The two most common types are DEHA (diethylhexyl adipate) and DEHP (diethylhexyl phthalate).

The problem is that plasticizers are not chemically bonded to the PVC polymer chain - they are simply “mixed in.” When PVC film comes into contact with fats (meat, oil, cheese) or acidic environments (citrus, pickles), plasticizers can easily separate and migrate into the food. DEHP has been restricted or banned for food packaging use in the EU and many other countries. In Vietnam, the Ministry of Health advises avoiding PVC in direct contact with high-fat foods.

This does not mean all PVC film is dangerous. PVC using controlled plasticizers (such as DEHA at low levels, not DEHP) that holds a Food Contact certification can still be used for low-fat foods such as fresh produce wrapped on trays. However, the higher risk compared to PE is undeniable.

Despite PE being safer overall, PVC is still used commercially in some situations. The guidance below helps you choose correctly for each application.

Use PE film when: wrapping high-fat foods (meat, fish, cheese, butter); microwave use is needed; packaging food for children or people on controlled diets; your business exports to the EU, US, or markets with strict plasticizer regulations; sustainability and reduced environmental impact are priorities.

PVC is still acceptable when: wrapping fresh produce at retail (needs to cling to EPS foam trays - PE adheres less well in this case); food has no direct contact and is low in fat; use duration is short (under 24 hours). Even in these cases, if high-quality PE is available, PE remains the preferred choice.

5 Common Mistakes When Using Food Wrap Film

Whether using PE or PVC, the mistakes below significantly increase food safety risks.

1. Wrapping food while still hot above 70°C. High temperatures accelerate molecular release in both PE and PVC. For PE this is a low but real risk; for PVC it is a serious risk because plasticizers are released very rapidly at heat. Always let food cool below 40°C before wrapping.

2. Microwaving without checking the label. Only film labeled “Microwave Safe” (microwave icon or clear text) is safe. Most standard PE film is not Microwave Safe. PVC should never go in a microwave. Alternatives: heat-resistant PP containers, glass plates with lids, or dedicated microwave-safe paper.

3. Leaving high-fat foods wrapped for more than 48 hours. Fat is a natural solvent for both PVC plasticizers and PE monomers. Even with the safest PE, a 1-2 day limit for high-fat foods is a principle worth following. For longer storage, use a sealed container.

4. Using industrial pallet stretch film to wrap food. Industrial PE stretch film is thicker, has not been tested to food contact standards, and may contain UV stabilizers or other additives unsuitable for food contact. Always purchase food wrap from sources with a clear Food Grade label.

5. Buying unlabeled film because it is cheap. Very cheap food wrap is often low-grade recycled PE or PVC with uncontrolled plasticizers. With food in direct contact, saving a few thousand dong per roll is not worth the health risk to your customers.

How to Identify Quality Food Grade PE Film

The market has many films of unclear origin. Below are quick checks before purchasing or upon receiving goods.

Check the label first: Food Grade PE film must clearly state “Food Grade,” “Food Contact,” “QCVN 09-1:2011/BYT,” FDA/EU logos, or the fork-and-knife symbol (the international symbol for food contact materials). If it only says “PE film” or has no standard information - do not buy it for food applications.

Visual and tactile check: Quality PE is uniformly transparent or evenly milky white, with no hazy patches and no uneven thick/thin spots. Pull gently at one corner - it should be soft, stretch evenly, and not feel stiff or tear immediately. Smell it: no odor or only a very faint slight scent. A strong chemical or harsh smell means do not use it.

Quick PE vs PVC identification: Cut a small piece and test with flame. PE burns cleanly with a yellow flame, little smoke, and a mild candle-wax scent. PVC ignites with difficulty, the flame has a green edge, produces black smoke, and emits a sharp acrid smell (due to HCl release). This is only a rough field test - the most reliable method remains checking the label and purchasing from a certified supplier.
