The mistake I have seen most often since 2011 is comparing two machines on purchase price alone. A cheaper machine without pre-stretch can cost tens of millions of VND more in film each year in a high-volume warehouse, enough to wipe out the price gap within a few months. When you read the table, compare the load column and the pre-stretch column first, because these two specifications create the biggest price gap between models of the same rotary-table type. Real running cost: a machine without pre-stretch versus one with pre-stretch

At a warehouse wrapping 100 pallets a day, a machine with 250% pre-stretch can cut film cost from about VND 8.6 million to 3.5 million a month, under the assumptions below. This is an example to show how the calculation works, not a promise of savings; every warehouse should measure again with its own numbers.

Assumptions: the warehouse wraps 100 pallets a day, 25 days a month, or 2,500 pallets a month; each 1.2 × 1.0 m pallet is about 1.5 m tall and wrapped with about 10 turns, needing about 44 m of stretched film around the load. A machine without pre-stretch pulls the film only through a brake, assumed to stretch it by 40%, so it uses about 31 m of film per pallet (44 ÷ 1.4). A 250% pre-stretch machine turns 1 m into 3.5 m, so it uses only about 13 m (44 ÷ 3.5).

A short formula for your own estimate: film saved ratio = 1 - (1 + stretch of the old machine) / (1 + pre-stretch ratio of the new machine). With an old machine stretching 40% and a new one at 250%, the result is 1 - 1.4/3.5 = 60%. If the old machine stretches only 0-100%, the saving falls between 43% and 71%; a 150% pre-stretch machine saves less, roughly 20-60%. According to Wikipedia, most stretch film can stretch to about 500% before it breaks but is usually stretched only 100-300% in use, so a machine’s pre-stretch ratio must be paired with a film tough enough to take it.

Every warehouse has different pallet sizes, load heights and film prices, so the surest approach is to put your own numbers into the same calculation as the table above: weigh the film roll before and after wrapping 10 pallets to get metres per pallet, multiply by pallets per month, and multiply by the film price you actually pay.

Factors that affect the price of a PE stretch wrapping machine

The price of a PE stretch wrapping machine is mainly set by four factors: rotary table load rating, pre-stretch unit, control system and origin; in addition, wrapping height, optional add-ons and installation conditions at the warehouse can make quotes differ significantly.

Table load rating comes first: a machine rated 2,000 kg needs a stronger table structure and motor than one rated 1,500 kg, so it costs more. If your pallets are usually only 800-1,000 kg, there is no need to buy a high-capacity machine. The pre-stretch unit comes second; it raises the machine price but lowers film cost over time. In my experience, a warehouse under 30 pallets a day does not need pre-stretch yet, while mid-size and large warehouses should prioritize it.

The third factor is the control system. A machine with a touchscreen and several stored wrapping programs costs more than a basic push-button one, but it helps when the warehouse handles many pallet sizes, because the operator just selects a program instead of adjusting by hand each time.

• Flush-floor installation so the table surface sits level with the floor, suited to warehouses using many hand pallet trucks that allow cutting into the floor.
• Top platen to hold light, tall loads such as can shells, empty cartons and plastic bottles when the table turns.
• Built-in scale on the table when you need to record the weight of each pallet for shipping documents.

Choose a stretch wrapper by volume instead of by budget

The quickest way to choose is to start from pallets per day: under 50 pallets, use a basic semi-automatic machine; 50-150 pallets, a full-featured semi-automatic machine; above 150 pallets or multiple shifts, an automatic machine on a conveyor becomes necessary.

Capacity must also match volume: the machine capacity you need (pallets per hour) equals pallets per day divided by real operating hours, plus 20-30% reserve for peak hours. For example, a warehouse of 100 pallets a day operating 8 hours needs 12.5 pallets an hour; adding 25% gives about 16 pallets an hour, which means a semi-automatic rotary-table machine is already enough and a more expensive automatic machine is not yet needed.

In my experience, only when volume exceeds about 150 pallets a day or the line runs 2-3 shifts does an automatic machine integrated with a conveyor pay back quickly, because at that point attaching and cutting film by hand starts to bottleneck the whole line.

How to compare two stretch wrapper quotes correctly

Two quotes can only be compared when they have the same technical specifications and the same scope of service. A cheaper quote is usually missing some of the items below, not necessarily cheaper because the machine is. This is the checklist I use when reading quotes for customers:

• Specifications: table load rating, table diameter, wrapping height, pre-stretch ratio and pallets-per-hour output, because two machines with the same name can differ in column, table and motor.
• Tax: whether the price includes VAT and whether an invoice is issued, since this changes the total noticeably.
• Transport and installation: whether delivery to the warehouse, unloading, floor leveling, commissioning and operator training are included.
• Warranty: the term, the scope (motor, control board, pre-stretch unit) and the response time when the machine fails.
• Spare parts and maintenance: whether spare parts are available in Vietnam and roughly what periodic maintenance costs.
