Air dunnage bags fill the voids between cargo in containers and trucks so the load cannot shift, tip or crush in transit. 2. AAR level and the 1/3 rule – size it right
Two things decide whether a dunnage bag actually holds: its strength rating and its size relative to the gap.
AAR Level (1-5) rates burst strength for the transport mode. Level 1-2 (Kraft) suits short domestic road trips with light shift forces; Level 3-5 (PP woven) is for long-haul sea and rail export to the US and EU, where forces are higher and a burst bag means a shifted, damaged load. Match the level to the journey, not just the price.
The 1/3 rule sizes the bag to the gap: choose a bag whose inflated thickness is about one-third wider than the void it fills, so it inflates snugly without over-pressuring. A bag too small slips out and does nothing; too large and it cannot inflate fully or it splits. Measure the largest void, apply the 1/3 rule, and pick the AAR level for the trip – that combination is what stops cargo moving.
