Open deck plastic pallets have a vented (grid) top that drains water and lets air circulate, making them the default for produce, seafood, fishery and damp or chilled stores. ICD moulds them in virgin HDPE at 1100×1100 mm and 1200×1000 mm, with dynamic load 1,000-1,500 kg, static load 3,000 kg and beam-rack load 800 kg. Choose open deck pallets when:
- Wet, washdown or chilled environments: the open grid drains liquid instead of pooling it, so loads stay dry and the pallet washes clean.
- Produce, seafood and cold-chain: air flow around the load supports faster cooling and reduces condensation.
- General warehousing on a budget: less material than a closed deck, so a lower unit price for the same footprint.

2. Open deck vs closed deck – when the grid wins
The open grid is an advantage exactly where a closed top is a liability. In washdown areas, a sealed deck traps water in pockets that breed bacteria and add weight; the open deck drains in seconds and dries fast. In a chiller, air moving through the deck speeds cooling and cuts condensation under the load.
The grid becomes a disadvantage for small or fine goods: cartons under about 200×200 mm, bagged powder or loose items can sag into or fall through the openings. For those, choose a closed deck. As a rule of thumb: if the load is washed, wet or chilled, pick open deck; if it is fine, dry or powder, pick closed deck.

4. Frequently asked questions
1. Can open deck pallets be pressure-washed?
Yes – the open grid drains instantly and is designed for washdown and sanitation between cycles, which is why it suits food and seafood lines.
2. Are open deck pallets rack-safe?
On a 2-bar beam rack keep to 800 kg per position with a 20% margin. On wire-deck or solid shelving the full 3,000 kg static rating applies.
3. Will small cartons fall through the grid?
Items smaller than about 200×200 mm or bagged powder can sag into the openings. Use closed deck pallets for fine or small goods.
4. Do they work in freezers?
Yes, in virgin HDPE down to -40C. Avoid recycled HDPE or PP on racking in sub-zero temperatures.
