Static Load vs Dynamic Load of Pallets Explained

June 6, 2026 — Lê Văn Thăng

Static load vs dynamic load of pallets - definitions, why they differ, a load-capacity comparison of wood/plastic/metal, and expert tips for choosing the right pallet.

Static load and dynamic load of a pallet are two basic concepts that directly determine efficiency, safety and cost in warehouse management.

Understanding these two load types not only helps you choose the right plastic pallet or wooden pallet but also optimizes your storage and transport process.

What is Static Load?

Static load is the load-bearing capacity of a pallet while it is resting on a flat, solid surface. At this point, the goods’ weight is distributed evenly over the entire pallet surface, transferring down to the floor or to other pallets below (when stacked).

Example: When you load goods onto a pallet and place it on the warehouse floor, or stack several loaded pallets on top of each other, each pallet below bears the static load of the pallets above.

Static load is usually much higher than dynamic load, because there is no sudden impact force or movement.

What is Dynamic Load?

Dynamic load is the load-bearing capacity of a pallet while it is being moved. This includes when the pallet is lifted by a forklift, moved by a tow truck, or during transport on vehicles such as trucks and containers.

When a pallet moves, especially when lifted or lowered, the forces acting on it are different and more concentrated than in the static state. Small vibrations and impacts during transport also increase the pressure on the pallet.

Therefore, a pallet’s dynamic load is always lower than its static load. Understanding the dynamic load limit is extremely important to avoid damaging the pallet and goods during transport.

Why distinguish these two load types?

Confusing or ignoring the difference between static and dynamic load can lead to many problems:

  • Goods damage: If a pallet is dynamically overloaded, it can deform or collapse, damaging the goods on top.
  • Danger to staff: A broken pallet can cause serious workplace accidents.
  • Equipment damage: A deformed pallet can jam a forklift or damage other handling equipment.
  • Wasted cost: Having to replace pallets frequently due to damage, or buying pallets with an unsuitable load rating.

When choosing a pallet, you cannot rely on just one load type. You must consider both based on the specific use case.

Comparing the load capacity of pallet types

Static load and dynamic load capacity are important factors affecting a pallet’s performance.

The manufacturing material plays a decisive role in these figures.

Pallet Type Static Load capacity Dynamic Load capacity Key characteristics
Wooden Pallet Very good: 1,134 kg - 2,722 kg Lower: 680 kg - 1,361 kg Prone to warping and cracking under dynamic pressure.
Plastic Pallet Good: 907 kg - 2,268 kg Outstanding: 771 kg - 1,814 kg Uniform structure, deformation-resistant, ideal for impact applications.
Metal Pallet Leading: Over 2,722 kg, can reach 4,536 kg Quite good: 1,134 kg - 2,268 kg Very strong, but can bend under dynamic impact.

Expert advice on choosing a pallet based on load

  1. Clearly define the use case: If the pallet is mainly for static storage and stacking, you should focus more on static load. If the pallet is frequently moved by forklift, truck, or for export, dynamic load is the key factor.
  2. Safety margin: As a general rule, choose a pallet with a dynamic load at least 25-30% higher than the actual goods weight. This creates a safety margin, especially important in a dynamic warehousing environment.
  3. Consider the pallet type: Different pallet types (such as closed-deck plastic pallets, double-deck pallets, reinforced-bar pallets) have different load capacities. Plastic pallets usually have clearer and more consistent load figures than wooden pallets.
  4. Check the supplier: Always choose a reputable supplier with clear specifications and quality certification for their products. Do not hesitate to ask about load tests if needed.

Conclusion

Understanding and correctly applying the concepts of static load and dynamic load of pallets is a solid foundation for all logistics operations. It not only protects goods and ensures workplace safety but also optimizes operating cost for the business.
