What Is a Column-Base Plastic Pallet? Structure, Advantages and When to Choose One

June 6, 2026 — Lê Văn Thăng

Column-base plastic pallets have 9 cup-shaped feet in a 3x3 grid, static load 3,000-6,000 kg, and nest when empty - saving 60-70% storage space.

A column-base plastic pallet (also called a cup-leg or stackable pallet) is a single-faced plastic pallet with 9 cylindrical cup-shaped feet arranged in a 3×3 grid on the underside. Static load capacity ranges from 3,000 to 6,000 kg. The feet interlock when empty, letting pallets nest and saving 60-70% of storage space compared with non-stackable types. The trade-off is that cup-leg pallets cannot be placed on selective rack beams, so they are best suited to floor-stacking and block-stacking warehouses.

Structure of a column-base plastic pallet - why 9 feet outperform 3-runner designs in many situations

A standard column-base pallet has 9 cylindrical feet roughly 80-100 mm in diameter, evenly spaced in a 3-row by 3-column matrix. Each foot stands 100-150 mm tall depending on the product line. This is the key structural difference from a 3-runner pallet (three longitudinal runners) and from a standard 9-leg pallet with square feet.

Column-base plastic pallet with 9 cup-shaped feet arranged in a 3x3 grid for even load distribution

Why do 9 feet perform better than 3 runners in many contexts? When goods are placed on a pallet, the load is transferred to the floor through the feet. With a 3-runner pallet, each runner must carry the entire lateral load across its length. With 9 cup feet, the load spreads evenly across 9 contact points, reducing concentrated stress and limiting deflection between feet under heavy loads. This is why column-base pallets are more stable when stacking multi-layer loads - the cargo shifts less than on a 3-runner pallet.

The deck surface of a column-base pallet is either open-mesh or solid depending on the product line. Open-mesh decks are lighter and breathable, suitable for standard dry warehouses. Solid decks are heavier but carry higher static loads and are used for heavy goods or hygiene-sensitive warehouses.

Nesting advantage - why column-base pallets dominate distribution warehouses

This is the genuine competitive advantage of column-base pallets over almost every other pallet type. When empty, cup-leg pallets stack into each other because the feet interlock - the upper pallet seats inside the feet of the lower one, so the entire column is only one full pallet height plus n times the cup foot height (roughly 100-130 mm each). In practice, 10 nested cup-leg pallets stand about 1.3-1.5 m tall, while 10 flat-stacked conventional pallets stand 1.5-2 m and are unstable.

Nested column-base pallets saving warehouse floor space compared to conventional pallets

This advantage matters most in two situations. First, high-turnover distribution warehouses where pallets are constantly unloaded and awaiting the next load - storing empty pallets takes significant floor space if they cannot nest. Second, back-hauling empty pallets - trucks returning empty cup-leg pallets to the warehouse can typically fit more than twice as many as conventional pallets, cutting transport costs considerably.

Key limitations of column-base pallets - what suppliers often do not make clear

Single-faced column-base pallets cannot be used with selective rack, drive-in rack, or push-back rack systems. This is the most important technical distinction. Racking systems support pallets on two horizontal beams - the pallet must have a runner or crossbeam to rest on those beams. A cup-leg pallet has only 9 individual feet with no crossbeam, so placing it on rack beams causes it to drop through or rock dangerously.

Warning: column-base pallets cannot be placed on selective rack beams

If your warehouse uses or plans to install selective racking, choose a 3-runner pallet or a solid-block pallet with crossbeams instead of a cup-leg pallet. Conversely, if the warehouse only uses floor stacking or block stacking without pallet-on-beam racking, the column-base pallet is the most economical and flexible choice.

A second limitation that is rarely mentioned: a single-faced cup-leg pallet can only be used one way up - goods go on the flat top surface, and the cup-foot side faces down. This is not an issue in most standard warehouse applications, but it is worth noting when goods need to be palletised from both sides or in automated processes that require reversible pallets.

When to choose a column-base pallet - and when not to

Buying guide for column-base plastic pallets - decision checklist

Based on real data from warehouses in the Hanoi - Bac Ninh - Hung Yen corridor currently using ICD pallets, the decision can be summarised as follows.

Choose a column-base pallet when:

  • The warehouse uses floor stacking or block stacking with no selective racking
  • Goods are FMCG, electronics, or fast-moving consumer items that require nesting empty pallets to save space
  • Back-hauling many empty pallets - nesting reduces back-haul trips and cuts logistics costs significantly
  • Budget is limited - cup-leg pallets are typically 10-20% cheaper than 3-runner or solid-block pallets of the same size
  • Dynamic load per pallet does not exceed 1,000-1,500 kg

Do not choose a column-base pallet when:

  • The warehouse uses selective rack, drive-in, push-back, or pallet-flow racking
  • Goods are for export and need to be placed on receiver-side racking
  • Dynamic load exceeds 1,500 kg per pallet - use a 3-runner or reinforced solid-block pallet instead
  • The cold-store requires reversible pallets or pallets that can sit on cold-store rack beams

Second-hand column-base pallets - when they are a good buy and when to be careful

Used cup-leg pallets attract interest from many distribution and FMCG warehouses because they cost 40-60% less than new ones. However they require closer inspection than used 3-runner pallets because the cup feet can develop hidden cracks - particularly at the base of the cup where it contacts the warehouse floor. Hidden cracks are invisible to the naked eye but cause load capacity to drop suddenly.

When buying second-hand cup-leg pallets, check four things. First, colour - a cup-leg pallet still in good condition retains a uniform colour without patchy fading. Second, the cup foot surface - turn the pallet upside down and inspect each cup foot for cracks or deformation. Third, the drop test - drop the pallet lightly from 20-30 cm onto the floor; a sound pallet gives a sharp ring, a brittle one gives a dull thud or cracks. Fourth, confirm the source - cup-leg pallets from FMCG warehouses (beverages, consumer goods) are generally in better condition than those from chemical storage or outdoor yards.

Frequently asked questions about column-base plastic pallets

1. Are column-base pallets and 9-leg pallets the same thing?

Essentially yes - both have 9 feet in a 3×3 arrangement. The names differ by manufacturer and region. “Column-base” or “cup-leg” emphasises the round cup shape of the feet; “9-leg” emphasises the foot count. Some manufacturers distinguish further between 9-leg pallets with square feet and cup-leg pallets with round feet - round feet generally handle compressive loads better due to more even circumferential load distribution, while square feet are stiffer at the corners. In practice in the Vietnamese market the two names are used interchangeably.

2. Can a column-base pallet be used with a hand pallet jack?

Yes, but check the clearance between the cup feet. A standard hand pallet jack has tine width of roughly 150-200 mm and needs at least 160 mm of clearance between feet to insert the tines. Column-base pallets in the 1100 x 1100 mm and 1200 x 1000 mm sizes typically have 250-350 mm between foot columns, so a standard 2-way hand pallet jack works fine. A 4-way jack or an AGV should have its exact dimensions confirmed with the supplier before purchase.

3. Is the load capacity of a cup-leg pallet really weaker than a 3-runner pallet?

Not necessarily - it depends on the loading condition. Static load capacity (goods stored stationary) is comparable between cup-leg and 3-runner pallets of the same size and material. Rack load capacity (pallet on rack beams) for cup-leg pallets is zero because they cannot be used on racking. Dynamic load capacity (forklift in motion) is typically 10-20% lower for cup-leg pallets than for 3-runner pallets because the distributed foot structure is less rigid than a continuous runner. Conclusion: if your warehouse does not use racking and the dynamic load stays within 1,000-1,500 kg, a cup-leg pallet is perfectly adequate.

4. How do virgin-material and recycled cup-leg pallets differ?

Beyond the load capacity difference (virgin material carries 20-30% more), the more important factor is cup foot durability. Recycled cup feet become brittle more easily under repeated loading, particularly when struck by forklift tines. For high-turnover warehouses with daily inbound and outbound movements, investing in virgin HDPE cup-leg pallets results in lower total cost of ownership than recycled pallets after 2-3 years due to fewer failures.

5. Where can I buy column-base pallets in Hanoi and northern Vietnam?

ICD Vietnam supplies both new and used cup-leg pallets in Hanoi with immediate stock available and volume pricing. Stock on hand covers 1100 x 1100 mm, 1200 x 1000 mm, and 1000 x 1000 mm - both virgin material and grade-A recycled. Delivery covers all of northern Vietnam: Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hung Yen, Hai Phong, Hai Duong, and Vinh Phuc.
