The AbsorGel Hanging-C 1.0 kg is a container desiccant bag holding 1.0 kg of pure calcium chloride (over 94%) mixed with modified starch, which absorbs moisture from the air and turns into a gel so that nothing drips onto the cargo. The bag is 1,620 mm long and hangs vertically in the corrugation of the container wall using the AbsorHook, needing only a 25 mm gap between the cargo and the bag. A 40ft container on a long route (about 60 days) with ordinary cargo needs about 11 bags.

How it works: calcium chloride turns into a gel
Calcium chloride draws water vapor from the air passing through the breathable HDPE casing. Once it has absorbed enough moisture the salt turns into a solution, and the modified starch in the bag holds this solution as a gel. This is the difference from an ordinary granular calcium chloride bag: the gel does not run out when the bag is tilted or knocked, limiting the risk of water dripping onto cartons, wooden pallets or goods packaging.
The bag starts working as soon as it is taken out of its sealed plastic wrap, so only open the wrap right before hanging it in the container.
Installing with the AbsorHook and AbsorStick
The pre-attached AbsorHook lets you hang the bag in the corrugation of the container wall without tools. For a high cube container, two AbsorStick poles can be joined to reach the lashing rings above, with no ladder needed, saving time and reducing the risk of falls when working at height. The AbsorStick is made of recycled PP plastic and can be reused many times, while the gray AbsorHook can be detached from the bag for recycling.
The bag can also be hung horizontally using the grommet hole, which suits cases where the container wall has no suitable corrugation or when you need to cover the area close to the roof.
Number of bags for 20ft and 40ft containers
| Route | Type of cargo | 20ft container | 40ft container |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short (about 30 days) | Dry cargo | 5 bags | 9 bags |
| Short (about 30 days) | Humid cargo | 7 bags | 11 bags |
| Long (about 60 days) | Dry cargo | 7 bags | 11 bags |
| Long (about 60 days) | Humid cargo | 11 bags | 14 bags |
The actual quantity depends on transit time, climate, the volume of air in the container, the type of packaging and the type of goods. These are reference levels from the manufacturer, and ICD advises the specific quantity for your shipment.
When to choose the Hanging-C 1.0 kg
- Long sea routes: goods to Europe, the US and the Middle East, passing through several climate zones, where container rain is strongest.
- Moisture-sensitive goods: agricultural products, timber, paper, garments, footwear, electronic components and metal products prone to rust.
- Fewer bags to install: each 1.0 kg bag absorbs twice as much as the 0.5 kg version, so there are fewer hanging operations in the same container.
If you need to cover more spots evenly in a 20ft container, see the Hanging-C 0.5 kg version. For cargo stacked tight against the roof and walls with no lashing rings, use the Blanket-C blanket laid on the pallet.
Hanging-C or silica gel in a container?
Silica gel absorbs about 30% of its weight at 50% humidity and works well over a moderate temperature range, while the calcium chloride in the Hanging-C absorbs over 300% of its weight in real conditions. For a long sea container, large absorption capacity is the deciding factor. The full analysis of the types is in types of desiccant and how to choose.
Safety notes and disposal after use
Calcium chloride is classified as causing serious eye irritation (H319, under GHS). Wear gloves when handling and do not let a torn bag touch the eyes. The product is single use and is disposed of under local regulations at a licensed waste collection facility. The safety data sheet (SDS) and installation video are available through the QR code on the box. SGS test reports for RoHS and REACH SVHC (September 2025) on the calcium chloride and starch mixture both pass.

Frequently asked questions
How many AbsorGel Hanging-C 1.0 kg bags does a 40ft container need?
According to the manufacturer's table: 9 bags for a short route of about 30 days with dry cargo, rising to 14 bags for a long route of about 60 days with humid cargo. Send ICD the type of cargo, the route and transit time for a specific calculation.
Does the Hanging-C desiccant bag leak water?
The calcium chloride in the bag turns into a gel thanks to the modified starch, so it does not run freely like granular salt. Still hang the bag vertically, keep it at least 25 mm from the cargo and do not let the bag tear.
How long does the AbsorGel Hanging-C 1.0 kg last?
The shelf life of an unopened box is 3 years from the production date, stored at maximum 60% humidity and 5 to 25 °C. Once the wrap is removed the bag works immediately and is used for one shipment (single use).
Can the Hanging-C be used in a refrigerated container or in hot conditions?
The working temperature is -20 °C to 70 °C according to the manufacturer's specification, covering most sea routes.
What is the difference between the Hanging-C 1.0 kg and 0.5 kg?
Same technology, different desiccant weight and bag length (1,620 mm vs 840 mm). The 1.0 kg version needs fewer bags for the same container, while the 0.5 kg version is more flexible for covering many spots.
