Author: Le Van Thang, Director of ICD Vietnam – 15 years supplying logistics totes.
Lidded plastic crates have a fitted lid that keeps contents clean, secure and dust-free, and lets boxes stack flat and high without crushing the load. ICD supplies attached-lid (hinged) and separate-lid versions in EU footprints – the EU 600x400x230 and x280 hold 42-52 litres at 50-55 kg with a 250-280 kg stack load. For open-top picking use solid bins. See all types on the plastic crates page.
Choose lidded crates when:
- Dust, security or weather matter: the lid seals contents during transit and storage.
- High flat stacking: the lid spreads load so boxes stack without crushing.
- Closed-loop distribution: tidy, uniform, lidded totes for two-way logistics.

2. Attached lid vs separate lid – pick by workflow
There are two lid types and they suit different lines. An attached (hinged) lid folds back on the box itself, so it never gets lost and one person opens and closes it fast – best for high-rotation picking and two-way distribution where speed matters. A separate lid lifts off completely, giving full top access and a flatter, stronger stacking surface – best for long storage, sealing for transit, and stacking heavy loads high.
The trade-off: attached lids are faster but slightly reduce internal volume and stack strength; separate lids stack stronger but can be misplaced. For closed-loop totes that cycle daily, choose attached; for palletised long-term storage, choose separate. Either way the lid lets you stack flat and high without crushing the goods below, which an open bin cannot.
3. Frequently asked questions
1. Attached or separate lid?
Attached for fast, daily picking and two-way logistics; separate for sealed transit, long storage and stronger high stacking.
2. How high do lidded crates stack?
The lid spreads load for flat stacking to 250-280 kg by size, higher than an open bin.
3. Are they food-grade and washable?
PP versions are FDA food-grade and washable to 85C.
4. Do they fit Euro pallets?
Yes – EU 600×400 fits four per layer on a Euro 1200×800 pallet.
