Stretch Wrapping Machines
Semi-automatic to fully automatic pallet stretch wrappers - pre-stretch up to 300%, ROI in months.

Author: Le Van Thang, Director of ICD Vietnam - 12 years advising on industrial packaging solutions.
ICD Vietnam distributes 22 pallet stretch wrapping machine models in 4 groups: semi/automatic turntable (VND 38-150 million), battery-powered autonomous robots (VND 95-350 million), rotary arm and full auto (VND 85-185 million), horizontal + airport baggage wrappers (VND 18.5-125 million). All achieve 150-300% pre-stretch, 12-24 month warranty, free installation and operator training at the customer’s warehouse.
- Save 40-55% on PE film cost thanks to 250-300% pre-stretch versus hand wrapping (stretching the film 2.5-3 times before applying it to the pallet)
- Boost productivity 4-6x: 15-50 pallets/hour vs 3-5 pallets/hour by hand, cutting 1-3 workers/shift
- Typical ROI 1-6 months: for a 100-pallet/day warehouse, a VND 38 million semi-automatic machine pays back in about 1.2 months on film + labor savings alone

3. Stretch wrapper types - which one for your business?
The three main stretch wrapper groups differ clearly in how they work, investment level and the scale they suit. The table below summarizes pros/cons for a quick decision:
| Machine type | Pros | Cons | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semi-automatic turntable VND 38-45 million |
Low investment, ROI 9-14 months, 4-6h install, runs on single-phase 220V | Needs 1 operator, pre-stretch only 150-250%, max 20 pallets/h | Under 50 pallets/day, small workshop, supply dealer, no 3-phase power yet |
| Automatic turntable VND 75-150 million |
250-300% pre-stretch saves 40-55% film, 25-60 pallets/h, no operator needed | Needs 3-phase 380V, unsuitable for heavily warped pallets or chemical IBCs | 50-200 pallets/day, has 3-phase power, stable goods |
| Autonomous robot VND 95-350 million |
Wraps ultra-heavy/non-rotatable goods, moves between multiple points, 8-12h battery | High investment, periodic battery swap/charge, unsuitable under 100 pallets/day | 200-500 pallets/day, bulky goods, many dispersed wrapping points |
| Rotary arm VND 85-185 million |
Highest throughput 50-80 pallets/h, wraps pallets over 3m, conveyor integration | Needs reinforced concrete foundation, 3-5 day install, large footprint | Linear production lines, FDI factories, ultra-tall goods |
4. Stretch wrapper ROI - quick calculator for 3 options
Calculations based on a 100-pallet/day warehouse, 26 working days/month, packing labor at VND 9 million/month, LLDPE film at VND 38,000/kg, 800kg pallets 1,500mm tall.
| Metric | Hand wrapping | Semi-automatic (ICD-X0MS) | Automatic (ICD-2000BF) | S7 robot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Investment | VND 0 | VND 38 million | VND 85 million | VND 350 million |
| Pallets/hour | 3-5 | 15-20 | 35-50 | 40-50 |
| Workers/shift needed | 3-4 people | 1 person | 0.5 person (supervision) | 0 (autonomous) |
| Pre-stretch | 0% | 150% | 300% | 300% (Cube) |
| Film cost/year | VND 569 million | VND 403 million | VND 225 million | VND 225 million |
| Labor cost/year | VND 324 million | VND 108 million | VND 54 million | VND 0 |
| Total operating cost/year | VND 893 million | VND 511 million | VND 279 million | VND 225 million |
| Annual saving vs hand | - | VND 382 million | VND 614 million | VND 668 million |
| Payback period | - | 1.2 months | 1.7 months | 6.3 months |
The practical takeaway: for a 100-pallet/day warehouse, investing in a semi-automatic machine pays back in 1-2 months on PE film savings and 2 workers alone. The VND 350 million S7 robot pays back in 6 months, then saves VND 668 million/year continuously over the machine’s 7-10 year life.
5. Packaging supplies that go with stretch wrappers
To run a stretch wrapper effectively, a warehouse needs 3 additional support-supply groups. ICD supplies the full package in a single order - delivered with the machine, with a 5-8% discount on recurring supply contracts.
| PE pallet wrap film Genuine LLDPE film, 380-400% elongation, 500mm width, 4-20kg rolls, VND 38-55,000/kg. For 250-300% pre-stretch machines. |
Slip Sheets Sheets replacing wooden pallets - save 60-70% of export pallet cost. Used with a wrapper to secure goods on the slip sheet. |
Dunnage air bags Anti-impact air bags in containers, paired with wrapped pallets for long sea-freight export shipments. |
Film selection note: 300% pre-stretch machines (S7 robot, ICD-R1800FZ-PL, ICD-X100) must use LLDPE film with at least 380% elongation - cheap film reaching only 250-280% will tear on the pre-stretch rollers. ICD sells ICD-MPE40 PE wrap film made for high pre-stretch machines - 4kg roll, 50cm width, VND 155,000/roll.
6. How to choose the right stretch wrapper - ICD 5-question Checklist
Answer the 5 questions below to pinpoint the right model without waiting for a consultation:
Question 1: How many pallets/day does the warehouse wrap?
Under 50 pallets/day → a semi-automatic turntable (ICD-X0MS, VND 38 million) is enough. 50-200 pallets/day → an automatic turntable (ICD-X0PS, ICD-2000BF). Over 200 pallets/day → an autonomous robot or rotary arm.
Question 2: Does the warehouse have 3-phase 380V power?
No 3-phase yet → only choose single-phase 220V models (ICD-X0MS, ICD-T1650F, ICD-Y1650F) or a battery robot (no 3-phase needed to operate, only 220V to charge). Installing a 1-to-3-phase transformer costs an extra VND 8-15 million if you need an automatic model.
Question 3: What is special about the goods?
Goods over 2,000kg or that cannot rotate → robot or rotary arm. Goods over 2.2m tall → ICD-XT4550 robot (2,700mm) or ICD-R1800FZ-PL arm (unlimited). Loose carton boxes → horizontal ICD-DBC800.
Question 4: Initial investment budget?
Under VND 50 million → semi-automatic 220V line. VND 50-100 million → automatic turntable line. VND 100-200 million → entry-level robot or arm. Over VND 200 million → premium robot or full-auto arm with conveyor integration.
Question 5: Does the warehouse have a fixed or dispersed wrapping point?
Fixed point (1 location) → turntable or arm. Multiple dispersed points (wrapping right in the yard, 3-5 locations) → an autonomous robot is the only practical choice.
7. Applications by industry
| Industry | Recommended model | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Food - beverage | ICD-2000BF, ICD-X100 | High throughput, no manual contact, integrates with packing lines |
| Chemicals - lubricants | ICD-Maxgo, ICD-XT4550 | IBC tanks and drums can’t rotate → robot moves around the goods |
| Textiles - garments | ICD-X0MS, ICD-X0PS | Moderate throughput, light goods, frequent container export |
| FDI factories - electronics | S7 robot, Robopac TP3 | 3 continuous shifts, WMS/MES integration, ISO audit standard |
| Logistics - distribution warehouses | ICD-Maxgo, ICD-XT4512 | Many SKUs, fluctuating volume, wrapping space dispersed across the warehouse |
| Produce - seafood | ICD-X0MS, ICD-X0PS | Seasonal volume, easy cleaning, needs 220V power in rural areas |
| Airports - baggage | ICD-XT4508 | Purpose-built for baggage, auto-rotating, 120-180 bags/h capacity |

Frequently asked questions about stretch wrappers
1. What is the cheapest stretch wrapper, and is it usable?
The horizontal ICD-DBC800 at VND 22 million is the cheapest in the pallet/carton wrapper group. For an upright pallet wrapper, the ICD-X0MS at VND 38 million is the standard line, delivering 15-20 pallets/hour, a 12-month warranty, on single-phase 220V power. Avoid unbranded machines under VND 25 million - their magnetic brake is poor, they have no pre-stretch, and the motor is too small to last beyond 6-12 months.
2. For a 50-pallet/day warehouse, semi-automatic or fully automatic?
We recommend the semi-automatic ICD-X0MS (VND 38 million). An automatic machine at VND 75-85 million only saves an extra 30-40 seconds/pallet over semi-automatic - at 50 pallets/day, that is at most 25-35 minutes of labor saved per day, not enough to justify the VND 30-40 million price gap. An automatic machine’s ROI at this scale stretches to 2-3 years, which is not efficient.
3. What does 250% pre-stretch mean, and does it affect film quality?
250% pre-stretch means the PE film is stretched 2.5 times its original length before being applied to the pallet (1m of film becomes 2.5m). When pre-stretch stays within the film’s elongation limit (380-400% for high-quality LLDPE), the film is not structurally damaged - on the contrary, its elastic recovery force increases, holding the goods tighter. The key is matching the right machine + corresponding film quality.
4. Can a warehouse with only single-phase 220V power use a wrapper?
The entire semi-automatic line (ICD-T1650F, ICD-X0MS, ICD-Y1650F, ICD-X0PS, ICD-T1650FM) runs on single-phase 220V, 1.1-1.5kW, usable with household power. Automatic lines from ICD-T1650FZ up (2.2kW+) require 3-phase 380V. Autonomous robots run on lithium batteries, needing only 220V to charge overnight. With no 3-phase yet, ICD advises installing a 1-to-3-phase transformer (VND 8-15 million) or choosing a suitable single-phase machine.
5. How long is the warranty, and is there on-site technical support?
ICD provides a 2-year manufacturer warranty on the entire machine range. Within warranty, ICD technicians come on-site for free within 4h in Hanoi/HCMC and 24h in major industrial-park provinces. After warranty, the cost is VND 800,000-1,500,000/visit + parts.
6. Can an autonomous wrapping robot run 24/7 continuously?
Yes, but mind the charging time. The ICD-Maxgo runs 8-10h after a 6-8h charge (suitable for 2 shifts). The S7 Robopac robot and ICD-XT4550 use 240Ah Li-ion batteries, running 12h continuously after a 4h charge (suitable for 3 shifts). For uninterrupted 24/7, use 2 alternating robots or 1 robot + a quick battery swap. High-quality lithium battery life is 2,000-3,000 charge cycles, equivalent to 5-7 years.
7. Can a 2.5m or 3m tall pallet be wrapped?
Most ICD turntable machines have a 2,400mm wrapping mast, wrapping pallets up to 2,200mm tall. A 2.5m pallet needs a 2,700mm mast (an extra-cost option, VND 5-8 million) or the ICD-XT4550 robot (2,700mm) or S7 Robopac robot (3,000mm). Pallets over 3m must use the R1800FZ-PL rotary arm with a wrapping height customized to the factory’s requirement.
8. How long does installation take, and is a special foundation needed?
A turntable machine installs in 4-6h, no foundation needed - a concrete floor rated for 3-5 tons/m2 is enough. The R1800FZ-PL rotary arm needs a 200mm-thick, 400mm-deep reinforced concrete foundation for the gantry frame, taking 3-5 days for the foundation + 1 day to install. Autonomous robots need no installation - on delivery they only need a battery charge and sensor setup in 2-3h.
9. What is the estimated annual PE film cost for a 100-pallet/day warehouse?
With a 250% pre-stretch machine consuming 230g of film/pallet, total 598kg/month = 7,176kg/year. At VND 38-42,000/kg for high-quality LLDPE, that is VND 272-301 million/year. Versus hand wrapping (1,248kg/month x 12 x VND 38,000 = VND 569 million/year), the saving is VND 268-297 million/year. The film saving alone covers an VND 85 million machine in 3.5-4 months.
10. Is there a rental option instead of buying?
ICD offers a short-term rental program (3-12 months) for seasonal businesses or those testing before buying. Rental cost is 2.5-4% of the machine price/month (e.g. a VND 45 million machine rents for VND 1.1-1.8 million/month). The renter covers electricity and PE film; ICD handles maintenance and repairs. After renting, the customer can buy outright with 60% of paid rent credited.
