ESD Antistatic Plastic Pallets: Static Control for Electronics

June 6, 2026 — Lê Văn Thăng

ESD antistatic plastic pallets dissipate static at 1e6-1e9 ohms, protecting PCBs and chips. See resistance grades, pallet types and uses in electronics.

An ESD antistatic plastic pallet is moulded from conductive or static-dissipative plastic that bleeds off static charge in a slow, controlled way instead of letting it build up and discharge suddenly. In electronics manufacturing, that controlled dissipation protects PCBs, chips and semiconductors from electrostatic discharge damage during storage, handling and transport across the whole supply chain.

What is an ESD antistatic plastic pallet?

ESD stands for electrostatic discharge: the sudden transfer of charge between two objects at different electrical potentials. On a production floor, static is generated by even the smallest friction. An ESD pallet is made from a special plastic compound that dissipates this charge safely and in a controlled manner, preventing the build-up and abrupt discharge that destroys sensitive components.

The compounds used are either conductive plastic or static-dissipative plastic, so charge is neutralised gradually rather than released in a damaging spike.

Surface resistance grades: conductive vs dissipative vs antistatic

Pallets are classified by surface (and volume) resistance, measured in ohms. The lower the resistance, the faster charge flows away. Choosing the right grade depends on how sensitive your components are.

Grade Surface resistance (ohms) Behaviour Best for
Conductive 1 x 10^3 to 1 x 10^6 Charge flows away fastest Highly sensitive semiconductors, ESD-critical lines
Static-dissipative 1 x 10^6 to 1 x 10^9 Controlled, gradual dissipation PCB assembly, general electronics storage
Antistatic 1 x 10^9 to 1 x 10^11 Prevents initial charge build-up Packaging, lower-risk handling
Standard plastic (non-ESD) over 1 x 10^12 Insulator, charge accumulates Not suitable for electronics

Values follow common industry references (for example ANSI/ESD S20.20 worksurface and packaging ranges). For most PCB and component work, the static-dissipative range of 1 x 10^6 to 1 x 10^9 ohms is the standard choice.

Why electronics manufacturing needs ESD pallets

Semiconductor and microchip production demands an environment as close to static-free as possible. Even a small charge causes serious problems.

Risk Consequence
Component damage ESD permanently destroys tiny components or shortens their lifespan
Quality loss Latent defects that are hard to detect but hurt reliability of the final product
Economic cost Repair, replacement, warranty claims and brand reputation damage

Static control is a mandatory investment, and a complete solution includes dedicated ESD pallets alongside grounding, wrist straps and ESD flooring.

Features and benefits

Feature Benefit
Static dissipation Charge does not accumulate on the pallet or the product on it, removing the discharge risk
Component protection Minimises damage to boards, chips and sensitive parts in storage, transport and production
High durability Made from high-grade plastic, resisting impact and abrasion for a long service life
Easy cleaning Smooth, non-porous surface that wipes clean and suits cleanroom hygiene
Process optimisation Keeps products safe from inbound raw material to outbound finished goods

Types of ESD plastic pallets used in electronics

Solid deck ESD pallets

A flat, fully closed surface, ideal for moving small loose components or anything needing maximum protection from dust. The closed deck is easy to clean and helps maintain a cleanroom environment. See the closed-deck plastic pallet range.

Open deck ESD pallets

A mesh or grid surface for products needing airflow or where weight reduction matters. Despite the openings, they still dissipate static effectively.

Reversible ESD pallets

Usable on both faces for added flexibility and longer life, often chosen for automated systems or continuous pallet rotation.

Rackable ESD pallets

Engineered to sit on warehouse racking without support bars and to carry heavy loads, suited to large-scale electronic component storage.

Applications in the electronics industry

Stage Use
Component manufacturing Storing and moving PCBs, chips, processors and other sensitive parts on the shop floor
Product assembly Protecting partly or fully assembled devices such as phones, computers and medical equipment
Warehousing and transport Keeping goods safe from static throughout storage and shipping between plants or to customers
Cleanrooms Meeting strict cleanroom requirements where static control prevents contamination and damage

Frequently asked questions about ESD plastic pallets

1. What surface resistance should an ESD pallet have?

For most PCB and component work, choose static-dissipative plastic in the range of 1 x 10^6 to 1 x 10^9 ohms. Highly sensitive semiconductor lines may call for conductive plastic at 1 x 10^3 to 1 x 10^6 ohms.

2. What is the difference between conductive and dissipative pallets?

Conductive plastic (1 x 10^3 to 1 x 10^6 ohms) lets charge flow away fastest, while static-dissipative plastic (1 x 10^6 to 1 x 10^9 ohms) bleeds it off gradually in a controlled way. Dissipative is the usual choice for general electronics handling.

3. Can a standard plastic pallet be used in an ESD area?

No. Standard plastic is an insulator with resistance above 1 x 10^12 ohms, so charge accumulates and can discharge into components. Only ESD-grade pallets are suitable for electronics.

4. Which ESD pallet type is best for cleanrooms?

A solid deck ESD pallet, because its closed, smooth surface keeps out dust, wipes clean easily and meets cleanroom hygiene rules while still dissipating static.

5. Do ESD pallets lose their antistatic property over time?

Pallets made with permanent conductive or dissipative compounds hold their resistance for the life of the product, unlike topical antistatic sprays that wear off. Verify resistance periodically as part of your ESD audit.

6. Can ESD plastic pallets be used on racking?

Yes. Rackable ESD pallets are designed to sit on warehouse racking without support bars and to carry heavy loads, suiting large-scale component storage.
