PP (polypropylene) and Tritan are two food-contact plastics often compared for bottles, food boxes and kitchenware. PP is the cheaper, microwave-safe workhorse that handles up to 130C, while Tritan is a premium copolyester that stays glass-clear, resists odours, and is free of both BPA and BPS but tolerates only 109C. This guide compares the two on durability, heat, safety and use, so you can pick the right material for food applications.

What is PP plastic?

PP (polypropylene) is one of the most widely used thermoplastics today. It offers high mechanical strength, good heat resistance and is safe for food contact. How to identify PP

The recycling code for PP is the number 5 (a triangle with a 5 inside). PP is milky white or translucent and takes colour easily. When bent gently it has a degree of elasticity and does not snap brittlely.

What is Tritan plastic?

Tritan is a premium copolyester developed by Eastman Chemical (USA). It is highly durable, as clear as glass, BPA-free and safe for food contact. Tritan is increasingly used to replace PC and PP in premium bottles, jars and food containers.

How to identify Tritan

Tritan has no numeric recycling code like PP, but products usually carry the marking “Tritan(TM) Copolyester”. It is glass-clear and does not turn cloudy or yellow over time. To the touch, the surface is smooth, without the rough feel of some other plastics.

What PP and Tritan have in common

Both PP and Tritan are safe materials for food and household use. Their shared traits include: both are BPA-free and certified safe for health; both resist heat well enough to hold hot water or warm food; both are recyclable and environmentally friendly; and both are widely used in bottles, food containers, jars and kitchenware.

Expert tip: if you need a low cost and easy handling, choose PP. If you want a premium, durable, stain-free product, choose Tritan. For hot liquids or microwave use, PP is the safer pick because of its higher heat tolerance.

Tritan vs PPSU

PPSU (polyphenylsulfone) is often compared with Tritan for premium baby bottles. PPSU tolerates far higher heat, making it the choice for high-temperature sterilisers, while Tritan leads on clarity and value.

No plastic is absolutely safe

A BPA-free claim is only relative. If manufacturers omit BPA, they may use equivalent chemicals that can still pose health concerns. So you cannot judge a bottle as safe simply because it is made of PP or Tritan; the full material composition needs to be evaluated. For food-grade reassurance, look for recognised certifications such as FDA (USA) and EFSA (Europe) approval, which Tritan products commonly carry.

Frequently asked questions about Tritan and PP

1. Which is safer, Tritan or PP?

Both are food-safe and BPA-free. Tritan goes further by also being BPS-free and free of phthalates, which is why premium baby bottles and sports cups often use it. That said, no plastic is absolutely safe, so always check the certifications and full composition.

2. What recycling number is Tritan?

Tritan falls under recycling code 7, but it is not the polycarbonate (PC) that contains BPA. Code 7 simply means “other”; Tritan is a BPA-free copolyester.
