A heat shrink tunnel machine (heat shrink tunnel or shrink wrap machine) and a pallet stretch wrapper are two completely different types of packaging equipment, serving two different purposes. Many businesses purchase the wrong machine or do not know how to select the correct specifications. This article outlines 7 core criteria for choosing the right heat shrink tunnel machine for each application.

Difference: Heat Shrink Tunnel Machine vs Pallet Stretch Wrapper

Before going into selection criteria, it is essential to understand this fundamental difference:

Heat shrink tunnel machine (shrink wrap machine): uses heat to shrink shrink film (PE, POF, PVC) tightly over a product. Main applications: wrapping bottles and jars, individual product boxes, multipacks, bottle label shrinking. Requires an L-bar sealer + shrink tunnel, or an all-in-one machine.

Criterion 1: Dimensions of the Product to Be Wrapped

Product dimensions determine the required tunnel opening size. The tunnel must be at least 20-30% wider and taller than the product. For small products (bottles, paper boxes): a 400x250mm tunnel is sufficient. For medium products (cartons, multipacks): a 600x400mm tunnel. For large products (floor tiles, industrial goods): a tunnel of 800x600mm or larger is required.

Criterion 2: Type of Shrink Film to Be Used

Each type of shrink film requires a different temperature: PVC shrink: 70-100°C; PE shrink: 120-160°C; POF (polyolefin): 100-135°C. The machine must be compatible with the intended film type. A machine designed for POF may not be suitable for PE and vice versa if the temperature range is not wide enough.

POF is the current trend because it is clearer, more durable, and contains no chlorine like PVC - making it suitable for food packaging and export. If you have not yet decided on a film type, choose a machine with a wide temperature range (80-200°C) for flexibility.

Criterion 3: Conveyor Speed and Output Capacity

Calculate backward from the required output: how many products need to be wrapped per hour? Conveyor speed is typically 5-25 meters per minute. For a product 30cm long with a 10cm gap between products, each product occupies 40cm on the conveyor. At 10m/min, that equals 25 products per minute, or 1,500 products per hour.

Purchase a machine with 20-30% more speed than your current requirement to allow for growth and to avoid running the machine at maximum capacity continuously.

Criterion 4: Tunnel Temperature Stability

This is the most important technical criterion but is often overlooked. The heat tunnel must distribute heat evenly across the entire cross-section - there must be no overheated zones (which burn the film) or underheated zones (where the film does not shrink). A good temperature tolerance is ±5°C. Budget machines often have a tolerance of ±20-30°C, causing uneven shrinkage and poor product appearance.

Ask the supplier about temperature tolerance and request a live demonstration before purchasing. Run trials with your actual film and products, not just a demo with the supplier’s sample products.

Criterion 5: Sealing System

The shrink wrapping process involves 2 steps: sealing the bag opening (sealing) then passing through the heat tunnel to shrink. All-in-one machines integrate both steps. Separate systems consist of an L-bar sealer and a separate tunnel.

The L-bar sealing system allows sealing in two directions in a single press - faster than sealing twice consecutively. The quality of the seal directly affects the finished appearance of the product after shrinking. A defective seal (bubbling, uneven) cannot be corrected once the product has passed through the tunnel.

Criterion 6: Power Supply and Energy Consumption

Heat shrink tunnel machines consume more electricity than pallet stretch wrappers because the tunnel temperature must be maintained continuously. Small machines: 2-5kW. Medium machines: 5-15kW. Large industrial machines: 15-30kW. Factor electricity costs into the total cost of ownership (TCO) - a low-priced machine with high power consumption may actually cost more over 3-5 years of use.

Criterion 7: Technical Support and Spare Parts

Heat shrink tunnel machines have many consumable components: teflon sealing wire, heat-resistant gaskets, conveyor motor, thermostat. These components wear over time and require periodic replacement. Choose a supplier with spare parts in stock and a technical team that can provide same-day support when the machine breaks down during peak production hours.
