What Is Woven PP Fabric? Why It Is Used in Packaging

What woven PP fabric is: tape extrusion, cross weaving and coating, why it resists tearing, and its use in jumbo bags and high-AAR dunnage bag shells.

What Is Woven PP Fabric? Why It Is Used in Packaging

Reviewed and updated by ICD - Week 24/2026

Quick summary:

  • Woven PP fabric is made by drawing polypropylene into thin tapes and weaving them in a cross structure, giving outstanding tensile and tear strength.
  • It is the ideal material for industrial packaging (jumbo bags, agricultural and chemical sacks) and the outer shell of high-AAR-level woven PP dunnage bags.
  • It resists moisture and chemicals and can be reused, giving both economic and environmental benefits.
  • Its cross-weave spreads load across warp and weft, so it resists tearing and puncture far better than single-layer film or kraft.

What is woven PP fabric? Structure and strength

Woven PP fabric is a textile made from thermoplastic polypropylene (PP), woven - not knitted - with PP tapes interlaced tightly in a cross structure. It is a key material for the outer shell of dunnage bags.

How it is made

Production needs precise technology for uniformity and strength:

  • Tape extrusion: PP pellets are melted and drawn into thin, flat tapes of even width. The tape quality (thickness, initial tensile strength) decides the final fabric quality.
  • Weaving: the tapes are woven warp and weft into a uniform sheet. This cross structure forms a durable matrix that spreads force better than any single-layer film.
  • Coating: a thin PE or PP film is often laminated to one or both sides to boost moisture and water resistance, sealing the gaps between the woven tapes.

How it bears load

Its strength comes from the weave and from PP itself. The cross weave distributes tensile or tearing force evenly across the warp and weft rather than concentrating it at one point, giving superior tear and puncture resistance. Polypropylene tape is naturally high in tensile strength, and woven together the fabric can carry several tonnes without breaking.

Why woven PP is preferred for heavy-duty packaging

Load capacity, impact strength and shunting

Thanks to its high tensile strength, woven PP is the main material for jumbo bags (FIBC) rated 500-2,000 kg. In logistics, especially rail, packaging must withstand shunting forces when cars couple. The extreme compression and impact resistance of woven PP make it the only material reaching the high AAR levels for dunnage bags. See structure and types for how it compares with kraft.

Moisture and chemical resistance, reuse

PP resists moisture and chemicals well, protecting goods such as fertilizer, chemicals and grain from damp and corrosion in long storage and transit. Its durability lets bags (jumbo bags or woven PP dunnage bags) be cleaned and reused many times if the structure is intact - a long-term economic benefit.

Key applications in logistics

Jumbo bags (FIBC) and dry bulk

The most common use - holding and shipping bulk materials such as cement, minerals and plastic pellets, keeping the package intact through lifting, lowering and stacking. Also used for rice, sugar and animal feed, where moisture resistance and strength protect the product.

High-AAR woven PP dunnage bag shells

In container logistics, woven PP gives an outer shell far more puncture and tear resistant than multi-ply kraft, easily reaching Level 3-5 - required for very heavy or sharp-edged cargo such as steel coils and machinery. See how to choose a dunnage bag.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is woven PP stronger than film or kraft?

Its cross weave spreads force across warp and weft instead of concentrating it, so it resists tearing and puncture far better than single-layer film or paper.

What load can woven PP carry?

Jumbo bags are rated 500-2,000 kg, and woven PP dunnage shells reach the highest AAR levels (3-5).

Is woven PP waterproof?

PP resists moisture and chemicals, and a PE/PP coating seals the weave gaps for full water resistance.

Can woven PP be reused?

Yes. If the structure is undamaged, it can be cleaned and reused many times, unlike kraft.
