Large HDPE Round Plastic Drum Container: Sizes, Applications and Buying Guide
\n\n

Large HDPE round plastic drums from 100L to 3,000L are the most widely used liquid storage vessel in Vietnamese industry and agriculture - chosen for broad chemical resistance, outdoor durability, and a capacity range that covers most applications. Most buyers, however, do not know the critical difference between blow-moulded and rotationally moulded drums - two manufacturing processes that produce containers with very different wall thickness uniformity and capacity limits. Confusing the two leads to the wrong choice, especially for chemical storage or capacities above 1,000L.

\n\n

Why round - not rectangular - for liquid storage?

\n\n

The answer lies in basic physics: a circle distributes pressure more evenly than any other shape. When a drum is full of liquid, internal pressure acts outward in every direction. In a rectangular container, pressure concentrates at the corners and flat sides - the weakest points of that design. A round drum distributes pressure evenly around the entire circumference, so a thinner wall still withstands the same internal pressure.

\n\n

\n\n

The practical result: a 200L HDPE round drum with an average wall thickness of 6-8 mm is safer than a 200L rectangular container with 8-10 mm walls when holding dense liquids or chemicals. This is why drums, chemical tanks, and aquaculture vats all use round shapes rather than boxes.

\n\n

The one significant drawback is lower space efficiency. When stacking in a warehouse, the gaps between round drums can consume up to 21% of floor area - a factor to account for when planning storage layout.

\n\n

Dimensions and technical specifications by capacity

\n\n

Vietnamese manufacturers currently supply HDPE round drums in fairly standardised capacity ranges. The reference specifications below are the most common on the market - note that dimensions may vary by plus or minus 2-3% depending on the manufacturer.

Capacity Mouth x Base diameter Height Empty weight Suitable for
100L Diameter 43 cm 76 cm ~5 kg Small chemical batches, ornamental fish, household water
200L Diameter 76-60 cm 59 cm ~8-10 kg Dyeing chemicals, seed nursery, water treatment
350-400L Diameter 90-70 cm 80-90 cm ~14-18 kg Shrimp/fish fry rearing, bio-fertiliser composting, chemicals
500L Diameter 100-80 cm 95-100 cm ~20-25 kg Chemical storage, shrimp farms, clean water supply
1,000L Diameter 120-100 cm 110-120 cm ~40-50 kg Wastewater treatment, medium-scale hatcheries
2,000-3,000L Diameter 150-180 cm 120-170 cm ~80-130 kg Biogas digesters, composting pits, large wastewater treatment

\n\n

Important note on height: 200L and 500L drums are often shaped like a mushroom - the mouth is wider than the base. This makes internal cleaning easier but increases the floor footprint compared to straight-walled drums. When planning installation, calculate using the mouth diameter, not the base diameter.

\n\n

Blow moulding or rotational moulding? The difference determines safe application limits

\n\n

Most buyers do not realise that HDPE round drums are produced by two completely different manufacturing processes, and distinguishing them directly affects the safe application limits of the container.

\n\n

    \n

  • Blow moulding: Compressed air inflates molten plastic into a mould. Advantages: fast production, lower cost. Disadvantages: uneven wall thickness - the middle section of the body is typically thinner than the mouth and base. Practical capacity limit is around 500L and below. Most common for 100L-200L drums.
  • \n

  • Rotational moulding (rotomold): The mould rotates in multiple directions inside a heated oven, and HDPE powder coats the entire mould surface evenly. Advantages: uniform wall thickness, no weld seam, suitable for large capacities from 500L to 5,000L. Higher production cost but superior durability. This is the process that produces the 1,000L-3,000L tanks now widely used in wastewater treatment and large-scale aquaculture.

Real-world applications by industry

\n\n

Large HDPE round drums are used across four main industry groups in Vietnam, each with different technical requirements for capacity and grade of HDPE.

\n\n

\"Large

\n\n

    \n

  • Aquaculture. This is the most common application - 350L to 2,000L round drums are used as shrimp fry rearing vats, fish grow-out tanks inside shade houses, or water treatment tanks before supply to ponds. Essential requirement: HDPE free of harmful additives that do not alter water pH. Drums for aquaculture are typically blue or black to limit algae growth in light-exposed environments.
  • \n

  • Industrial chemicals. HDPE drums are used for storing and mixing chemicals in dyeing, electroplating, paper manufacturing, and metal surface treatment. Key note: HDPE resists dilute acids, alkalis, inorganic salts, alcohols, and many solvents well. However, HDPE is not compatible with certain strong organic solvents such as MEK, THF, and toluene - always consult a chemical compatibility chart before use.
  • \n

  • Clean water and wastewater treatment. 1,000L-3,000L rotomold drums are installed at pumping stations, small wastewater treatment plants, or used as equalisation tanks. Advantages over concrete tanks: fast installation (1-2 days instead of 2-4 weeks), portable, watertight without waterproofing paint, and relocatable.
  • \n

  • Agriculture and biogas. 500L-1,000L drums are used for composting organic fertiliser, storing liquid fertiliser solutions, or as household-scale biogas digesters. The UV resistance and weathering durability of HDPE allows outdoor installation for many years without a cover.

Virgin HDPE or recycled HDPE - how to tell them apart in practice

\n\n

The HDPE round drum market in Vietnam shows large price differences for the same capacity - sometimes up to 30-40%. Most of this difference comes from the quality of the HDPE resin used. Virgin resin produces durable, food-safe, chemical-safe containers; recycled HDPE is cheaper but has inferior mechanical properties and cannot be guaranteed food-safe or safe for aquaculture.

\n\n

\"Products
Products made from recycled HDPE resin used across many fields.

\n\n

A quick identification checklist when buying:

\n\n

    \n

  • Colour: Virgin HDPE is opaque white or a uniform colour with no dull spots or streaks. Recycled HDPE often shows uneven colour variation, tending towards yellow or grey.
  • \n

  • Smell: Virgin HDPE has no odour or only a faint plastic smell when freshly produced. Recycled HDPE often carries a burnt or chemical odour.
  • \n

  • Surface: Virgin HDPE has a smooth, even surface. Recycled HDPE often has a micro-rough texture that looks uneven on close inspection.
  • \n

  • Reputable manufacturer: For food or aquaculture applications, ask the supplier for a material test certificate or factory conformance certificate in writing.
  • \n

\n\n

3 common mistakes when buying a large HDPE round drum

\n\n

Based on practical consulting experience, these three mistakes occur most frequently and are all avoidable if you know them in advance.

\n\n

    \n

  • Mistake 1: Choosing capacity by intuition without calculating actual load weight. A 1,000L drum filled with water weighs exactly 1 tonne - plus the drum itself at approximately 40-50 kg. The total load on the floor is over 1 tonne concentrated on a contact area roughly 1 metre in diameter. Many facilities install large drums indoors without checking the floor’s load-bearing capacity first - particularly dangerous on upper floors or thin concrete slabs.
  • \n

  • Mistake 2: Using a blow-moulded drum for concentrated chemicals or high loads. A blow-moulded 200L drum has a longitudinal body seam - a clear mechanical weak point. When holding dense chemicals (specific gravity above 1.2) or placed outdoors under repeated thermal expansion and contraction, the seam is prone to cracking. For long-term chemical applications, rotomold is the safer choice despite the higher cost.
  • \n

  • Mistake 3: Not budgeting for accessories upfront. A large round drum also requires: a bottom drain valve (ball valve or butterfly valve), a support frame or steel stand if the floor is uneven, stainless steel or HDPE fittings and pipework, and a lid if dust or contamination protection is needed. Total accessory costs can equal 20-40% of the drum price - factor this in from the start.
  • \n

\n\n

Integrating round drums into your storage and logistics system

\n\n

Large HDPE round drums are typically installed in a fixed position, but in some cases they need to be moved or transported - particularly during factory expansion or layout changes. Drums of 500L and above are usually too heavy to handle by hand even when empty - a forklift or pallet truck with a suitable holding attachment is needed.

\n\n

For storage systems that arrange multiple 200L-500L drums, placing them on racking plastic pallets makes forklift movement easier and creates clearance underneath for leak inspection. Select pallets with a load rating to match - a 200L drum filled with chemicals at a specific gravity of 1.3 can weigh close to 280 kg.

\n\n

When transporting large HDPE drums by truck, secure them with strapping and wrap groups of drums in stretch film to prevent impact and shifting in transit. Round drums tend to roll if not properly secured - a common accident when wheel chocks or correct tie-downs are not used.

HDPE round plastic drum category Large plastic containers 500L-5,000L Industrial solid plastic drums

\n\n

\n\n1. How much does a 200L HDPE round drum cost?\n\n

Retail prices for 200L HDPE round drums in Vietnam in 2026 range from approximately 350,000 VND to 650,000 VND per drum, depending on resin quality (virgin or recycled), manufacturer, and order quantity. Virgin HDPE rotomold drums are typically 30-50% more expensive than blow-moulded recycled drums of the same capacity. Orders of 20 drums or more usually attract a 10-15% discount off the unit retail price.

\n\n2. Can HDPE round drums be used for food storage?\n\n

Yes - but only drums made from virgin HDPE resin carrying a food-grade certification. HDPE is plastic resin number 2 and is certified safe for food contact by the FDA and international food safety bodies. Recycled HDPE drums cannot be guaranteed food-grade because the composition of recycled resin cannot be fully controlled. For food applications, ask the supplier to confirm food-grade status in writing before purchasing.

\n\n3. How long can HDPE round drums be left outdoors?\n\n

Virgin HDPE with integrated UV stabiliser additives can remain outdoors for 10-15 years without significant brittleness or colour fading. HDPE without UV additives, or recycled HDPE, typically begins to degrade after 3-5 years under direct sun and rain. How to identify drums with UV additives: reputable manufacturers usually state
