Quick summary:
- A tyre wrapping machine wraps PE film around each tyre or a pallet of tyres, protecting them in storage and transit.
- Three types: single-tyre (vertical) wrappers, tyre-pallet wrappers, and horizontal line wrappers.
- Uses: tyre factories, tyre dealers, auto-parts warehouses, and tyre export.
- Versus hand wrapping, a machine cuts time from minutes to 10-20 seconds per tyre and labor by about 90%.
Tyre wrapping machines: a specialized packaging solution
A tyre is an awkward shape - round, donut-like - that does not suit a standard pallet wrapper. The auto and tyre-distribution industries use dedicated wrapping solutions, from wrapping single tyres to wrapping whole tyre pallets for bulk dispatch. See the broader stretch wrapping machines range.
Why tyres need a dedicated wrapper
Tyres differ from normal warehouse goods: round, with a complex tread pattern, 5-50 kg each, usually stacked or stood upright. A turntable pallet wrapper handles square loads well but is inefficient for individual round tyres. Protecting tyres matters because dust and grease lodge in the tread and are hard to clean, UV ages the rubber fast, and tyre-to-tyre contact scratches the tread. A PE film wrap blocks all of these.
Types of tyre wrapping machine
- Single-tyre wrapper: designed for individual tyres. The tyre stands upright and the machine applies a PE film band vertically or in a spiral around its circumference. Throughput 3-6 tyres a minute. Suits tyre dealers and auto-parts shops wrapping each tyre before storage.
- Tyre-pallet wrapper: a variant of a standard pallet wrapper, optimized for stacked tyre pallets, usually with a larger turntable (1,800-2,000 mm instead of 1,650 mm) to hold a 2-3 row tyre pallet, wrapping the whole pallet.
- Horizontal tyre wrapper: the tyre lies flat on a conveyor and passes through a film ring. Used in large tyre factories integrated at the end of the line, 10-20 tyres a minute.
Real-world applications
- Tyre factories (Bridgestone, Michelin, Continental): high-speed automatic machines at the end of the line, wrapping each finished tyre before it enters the warehouse.
- Tier-1 distributors: semi-automatic machines wrapping single tyres or sets of four before dispatch to tier-2 dealers or garages.
- Spare-tyre stores: protecting unfitted spare tyres, especially in outdoor or temperature-uncontrolled storage.
Hand wrapping vs machine
| Criterion | Hand wrapping | Tyre wrapper |
|---|---|---|
| Time | 3-5 min/tyre | 10-20 sec/tyre |
| Tension | Uneven, operator-dependent | Consistent |
| Labor | 1-4 hours/day for 20-50 tyres | About 90% less |
For a dealer selling 20-50 tyres a day, hand wrapping is 1-4 labor-hours a day on wrapping alone; a machine repays quickly at mid-size scale and up.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why not use a normal pallet wrapper for tyres?
A turntable wrapper handles square loads well but is inefficient for round, individual tyres - dedicated single-tyre or horizontal wrappers fit the shape.
Which type suits a tyre dealer?
A semi-automatic single-tyre wrapper for individual tyres, or a tyre-pallet wrapper for sets dispatched on pallets.
Why wrap tyres at all?
To block dust and grease in the tread, slow UV ageing of the rubber, and prevent tread scratches from tyre-to-tyre contact.
How much faster is a machine?
10-20 seconds per tyre versus 3-5 minutes by hand, cutting labor about 90%.
