Automatic vs Semi-Automatic Stretch Wrapper: Which to Choose for Your Warehouse

June 6, 2026 — Lê Văn Thăng

Automatic vs semi-automatic stretch wrappers compared: cost, output, labour and ROI. Pick by warehouse throughput, with payback in 6-12 months.

The right choice is not which stretch wrapper is better, but which suits your throughput and conditions. A semi-automatic wrapper turns the turntable on its own while one operator attaches and cuts the film; it fits under 100 pallets a day at 22-55 million VND. A fully automatic wrapper attaches, raises, cuts and seals the film by itself, fits 100-500 pallets a day at 55-125 million VND, and frees one worker to run two or three machines at once. This guide gives a clear comparison so you decide fast and correctly.

Definition: how semi-automatic and fully automatic differ

The difference lies in how much the operator does during the wrap cycle.

Semi-automatic: An electric motor turns the turntable, but the operator must (1) attach the PE film head to the pallet base to start, (2) raise and lower the film carriage by button or by hand while the table turns, and (3) cut the film and secure it at the end. Wrap time per pallet is 60-120 seconds with one operator working directly.

Fully automatic: The operator only (1) places the pallet on the table, (2) selects a program, and (3) presses start. The machine does everything: attaches the film head, raises and lowers the carriage, then cuts and seals the film when finished. Wrap time per pallet is 60-120 seconds with 0.5 of an operator, because that person can do other work while the machine runs.

That is the key difference: a semi-automatic wrapper frees the operator from turning the load by hand, but still needs one person attending. A fully automatic wrapper lets one operator run two or three machines at once. To understand how stretch wrappers are grouped by other criteria, see the in-depth ICD article on stretch wrapper classification.

Detailed comparison: semi-automatic vs fully automatic

Criteria Semi-automatic Fully automatic
Purchase price 22-55 million VND 55-125 million VND
Labour per machine 1 dedicated operator 0.3-0.5 operator (remote oversight)
Output 10-20 pallets/hour 30-60 pallets/hour
Pre-stretch None or low Yes (150-250%)
PE film consumption 40-70% higher Lower
Wrap quality Depends on the operator Uniform, pre-programmed
Maintenance Simple, few parts More complex, needs technicians
Suitable throughput Under 100 pallets/day 100-500 pallets/day
Operator training 30 minutes 2-4 hours

When to choose a semi-automatic wrapper

A semi-automatic wrapper is the right call in four typical cases.

First, a warehouse starting automation on a limited budget. Semi-automatic is a sensible first step, cutting manual labour immediately without a large investment. As the warehouse grows, you can add machines or upgrade later.

Second, steady actual throughput under 80 pallets a day. At this level one operator fully covers the wrapping shift, and the PE film saved by pre-stretch is not enough to offset the higher machine price.

Third, loads of varied sizes that change often. A semi-automatic wrapper is more flexible because the operator adjusts manually for each pallet. A fully automatic wrapper works best when loads are uniform and a program can be set in advance.

Fourth, a damp, dusty warehouse environment. A semi-automatic wrapper has fewer electronic parts and fewer breakdowns in harsh conditions. The Y1650F semi-automatic wrapper is built to be compact and mobile, suited to warehouses that need to move the machine around.

When to choose a fully automatic wrapper

Investing in a fully automatic wrapper makes sense when at least two of three conditions hold: throughput above 100 pallets a day continuously; current labour cost of 8 million VND per person per month or more; and uniform, stable loads that allow a fixed wrap program.

Quick ROI formula: (automatic price - semi-automatic price) divided by [(monthly labour saving) + (monthly PE film saving)]. For a warehouse running 150 pallets a day, saving one operator (10 million VND a month) plus PE film (4 million VND a month) equals 14 million VND a month. A machine price gap of 20 million VND means payback in 1.5 months, an excellent ROI.

What about wrapping robots?

A self-propelled robot is a third segment, entirely different from both semi-automatic and turntable automatic machines. See the full analysis of automatic wrapping robots Robopac and Maxgo for when to choose a robot over a turntable and how the ROI works out.

Frequently asked questions

Do automatic wrappers break down more than semi-automatic ones?

The failure rate is not significantly higher with on-schedule maintenance. Automatic machines have more electronic parts, so repair costs when something fails are usually higher. With ICD, however, parts are in stock and same-day support keeps downtime low.

Can I reuse my old machine when moving from semi-automatic to automatic?

You cannot upgrade the machine, but ICD buys back old machines at a fair price when you purchase a new one. Contact us for the current trade-in policy.

How many automatic machines can one operator run at once?

In practice at many warehouses, one operator runs two or three fully automatic machines when they are placed close together. The operator loads a pallet on machine one, loads a pallet on machine two while machine one runs, then returns to unload machine one, and so on.

How quickly does a fully automatic wrapper pay back?

For a warehouse running 150 pallets a day, saving one operator plus PE film totals about 14 million VND a month against a 20 million VND price gap, giving payback in roughly 1.5 months.
