Price per roll: watch the core weight

One point many buyers overlook when comparing prices: the roll weight includes the plastic core inside. A standard core weighs 200-300 g, but some suppliers use a heavier core to inflate roll weight without adding actual film.

A concrete example: two rolls both labelled 2.0 kg, but roll A has a 200 g core, so the real film is 1.8 kg, while roll B has a 400 g core, leaving only 1.6 kg of film. You lose an extra 200 g of PE film per roll even though the listed price is the same. On an order of 500 rolls, that is 100 kg of PE film that quietly disappears against what you paid.

When buying by the roll, always ask the net weight of the film and the core weight in grams. The formula for the true price:

Parameter Example 2 kg roll
Roll weight (gross) 2.0 kg
Core weight 0.3 kg
Net film weight 1.7 kg
Listed price 110,000 VND/roll
True price per kg of film 64,700 VND/kg

Factors that affect PE film price

Understanding the pricing mechanism helps you negotiate better and avoid overpaying on large orders.

Resin grade (LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE)

The three common polyethylenes have different production and performance characteristics, which drive different prices. LDPE (Low-Density PE) is soft with good stretch, at 45,000-55,000 VND/kg, suited to slow hand wrapping. LLDPE (Linear Low-Density PE) is tougher with higher stretch (300-350 percent), at 50,000-70,000 VND/kg, and is the standard material for automatic stretch wrapping machines. HDPE (High-Density PE) is rigid and load-bearing but does not stretch; it is priced by m2 rather than by kg because its use is entirely different, mainly floor lining and waterproofing.

Thickness and roll width

Price rises roughly linearly with thickness in microns because more material is consumed. A 15-micron film costs about 42,000-48,000 VND/kg; a 25-micron film of the same resin runs 55,000-65,000 VND/kg. Roll width matters too: the standard 500 mm width is cheaper than special 400 mm or 750 mm widths, which require more production setup.

Production method: casting vs. blowing

Cast PE film (flat extrusion) has higher clarity, more uniform thickness, and better stretch than blown film. However, cast film costs about 10-15 percent more than blown film at the same thickness. For industrial pallet wrapping, cast film delivers better throughput because it tears less when stretched quickly.

Order quantity and volume discounts

Volume discounts at ICD Viet Nam follow this scale:

Quantity Discount Example (base 55,000 VND/kg)
Under 50 kg 0% 55,000 VND/kg
50 - 100 kg 5% 52,250 VND/kg
100 - 500 kg 8-10% 49,500 - 50,600 VND/kg
500 - 1,000 kg 12% 48,400 VND/kg
Over 1,000 kg 15% 46,750 VND/kg

How to calculate true total cost of PE film

The product price is only one part. The real cost of a PE film order has three components: goods price, VAT, and shipping. Some suppliers quote excluding VAT without stating it, or charge shipping separately, which raises the total noticeably.

The total-cost formula:

Component Example 100 kg order
Goods price (excl. VAT) 100 kg x 55,000 = 5,500,000 VND
5% discount - 275,000 VND
10% VAT + 522,500 VND
Shipping Hanoi-HCMC + 200,000 - 300,000 VND
Total payable 5,947,500 - 6,047,500 VND

For orders from 500 kg, ICD Viet Nam offers free delivery within inner-city Hanoi and nearby industrial parks. Deliveries to distant provinces are negotiated directly by route.

How to estimate the amount of PE film to buy

Many businesses buy by guesswork and then run short mid-run or overstock. A simple estimation formula based on real demand:

For pallet-wrapping film: Rolls needed per month = pallets wrapped per day x wrap layers x film consumed per pallet x working days per month. Typically one pallet wrapped in 3-4 layers consumes about 0.3-0.5 kg of 25-micron stretch film. A business wrapping 50 pallets per day x 22 days = 1,100 pallets per month consumes about 330-550 kg of film.

For waterproofing PE film: Area to cover plus 10-15 percent waste for seams and edges. Example: a 500 m2 pond needs about 550-575 m2 of HDPE film to cover the bank overlap and welded seams.

How to spot low-quality PE film before buying

PE film priced abnormally low (under 40,000 VND/kg for 20-micron stretch) often shows signs of a high proportion of recycled resin or cheap additives. The practical consequences: the film tears when stretched, fails to cling, or gives off an odour when used with food goods.

Visual checks before accepting delivery:

  • Uneven colour: a clear film with cloudy patches, white streaks, or uneven thick and thin spots signals recycled resin or production defects.
  • Stretch test: pull a section of film by hand. Good film stretches 200-350 percent before breaking; poor film stretches only 50-100 percent then tears.
  • Cling: press two layers together then peel apart. Good film has enough cling to hold the pallet load without unravelling; poor film is slippery.
  • Odour: virgin PE film is almost odourless. A pungent or oily smell signals additives or low-quality recycled resin.

Where to buy PE film: manufacturer or dealer

The PE film distribution chain in Vietnam usually has 2-3 tiers: manufacturer, distributor, retail dealer. Each tier adds 10-15 percent margin, pushing the final price up considerably. Buying direct from a manufacturer or a distributor with a real warehouse saves 15-25 percent compared with buying through middlemen.

Criteria for a reputable supplier:

  • Has a real factory or warehouse, not just a sales office.
  • Issues full VAT invoices under the company tax code.
  • Allows sample inspection before a large order.
  • Has a clear 7-day return policy for defective goods.
  • Has a technical team to help choose the right type, thickness, and width for your needs.

ICD Viet Nam has been a direct manufacturer and distributor of PE pallet-wrapping film in northern Vietnam since 2011. No middlemen, prices 10-20 percent better than market, nationwide delivery in 2-3 days, with VAT invoices on every order.

Frequently asked questions about PE film prices

1. Did PE film prices in 2026 rise versus the previous year?

PE film prices in 2026 rose a modest 3-5 percent over 2025, driven by higher resin and transport costs. The increase was lower than first forecast thanks to steadier resin supply from the Middle East and South Korea in late 2025. Businesses can stabilise costs by signing long-term supply contracts at a fixed quarterly price.

2. How much does buying 1-2 rolls of PE film cost?

Buying single rolls (1.4-3 kg) is usually 20-30 percent above wholesale. A 1.5 kg hand roll costs about 80,000-100,000 VND/roll depending on type and supplier. If you regularly need 10 rolls per month or more, buy by the carton or batch for better discounts and lower shipping.

3. How do hand and machine PE film differ in price?

Machine-grade PE film is usually 5-10 percent dearer than hand-grade at the same thickness because of tighter technical requirements: greater uniformity and no weak spots, since the machine draws film continuously at high speed. However, machine film consumes 15-20 percent less per pallet than hand wrapping thanks to automatically controlled tension on the pallet wrapping machine.

4. Can I get a sample before placing a large order?

Yes. ICD Viet Nam provides free samples for potential orders from 100 kg. Contact the hotline to request a sample with full specifications (actual thickness, stretch force, net weight). This step is recommended before any large order to avoid receiving goods that do not match requirements.

5. What are the payment and delivery terms?

Orders under 5 million VND: 100 percent paid in advance. Orders of 5-20 million: 50 percent deposit, 50 percent balance on delivery or within 15 days. Orders over 20 million and long-term customers: negotiable 30-day credit. Inner-city Hanoi delivery is same day or next morning; distant provinces take 2-3 working days.
