“Mini stretch wrapping machine” is a general name for small devices that wrap PE film, using human effort or a small electric turntable, to wrap single packages rather than heavy pallets. The name has no standard technical definition, so when you ask to buy, ask directly for the specifications: maximum load, table size, wrapping height and the film rolls it accepts.

The film roll is the point most often confused. Film for a handheld tool and film for a pallet machine can both be 500 mm wide (the width is the height of the roll), and differ in roll weight and core. 3 common types of mini stretch wrapping machines

The three differ in who controls the film tension: the person’s hand, a brake on the tool, or the turntable of a machine.

Type 1: Manual hand stretch wrapper

This is the simplest device: a handle with a spindle that holds the PE film roll. The user holds it and walks around the load to wrap, with no motor and no electricity. It suits shops, small warehouses and delivery points. The drawbacks are tired hands with continuous use, and tension that changes from person to person, so wrapping quality is uneven.

Type 2: Handheld tool with a brake to set tension

This type improves on the manual one: the spindle holding the roll has a brake to set the film tension. The user pulls the film out and walks around the product while the brake holds the roll and controls tension, so the film binds more evenly and the hands tire less. How much film and how many wraps does hand wrapping one pallet take?

By ICD Vietnam’s calculation, hand wrapping one 1200 x 1000 mm pallet 1.5 m tall takes about 10 wraps, or about 44 m of film, weighing about 345 g with 17-micron film. This figure lets you quickly estimate the film cost and the walking effort before deciding whether to buy a machine.

The calculation goes as follows. The circumference of a 1200 x 1000 mm pallet is 2 x (1.2 + 1.0) = 4.4 m. With 500 mm film, if each wrap overlaps the previous one by about half the width, each wrap adds 250 mm of height, so a load 1.5 m tall needs 6 wraps on the body. Add about 3 reinforcing wraps at the base (where the film grips the pallet) and 1 at the top, for a total of 10 wraps, equal to 44 m of film.

PE film has a density of about 0.92 g/cm³, so 1 m of film 500 mm wide and 17 microns thick weighs about 7.8 g. 44 m of film weighs about 345 g. The ICD Vietnam 2.1 kg hand-wrap roll holds about 1.8 kg of film and a 0.3 kg core, which is about 230 m of film, enough for about 5 pallets with the wrapping method above. With 23-micron film, the same wrapping uses about 470 g per pallet, matching the calculation table in the machine selection guide.

The person wrapping also has to walk: 10 wraps around a pallet is at least 44 m, and in practice longer because the person walks on the outside, an arm’s length from the load. A warehouse that hand wraps 20 pallets a day means the worker walks nearly 1 km, bending down to wrap the base and reaching up to wrap the top.

What does a lot of hand wrapping do to the people doing it?

Repetitive hand wrapping is a musculoskeletal injury risk that workplace safety authorities state clearly. WorkSafe Victoria (Australia) guidance on pallet wrapping points to the movements of bending low to wrap the base, reaching up to wrap the top, walking backwards and twisting repeatedly, and advises choosing an automatic or semi-automatic wrapping machine over hand wrapping.

The manufacturing ergonomics best-practice document from Ohio BWC (USA), republished by NIOSH, puts pallet wrapping in the group of tasks that cause awkward postures of the trunk and shoulders. In cases recorded after switching to a wrapping machine, measured per 200,000 work hours: the incident rate fell from 9.2 to 7.9, lost days fell from 369 to 0, restricted-duty days fell from 125 to 39.3, and the turnover rate fell from 94.6 to 35.3. These are figures from specific cases, not a general level for every warehouse, but they clearly show the direction.

When should you choose a mini stretch wrapper instead of an industrial machine?

A mini stretch wrapper is the right choice when the number wrapped each day is small, the products are small and lighter than the table rating (60 kg for the ICD-XT4508), floor space is limited and the investment budget is small. A handheld tool is also easy to carry on a delivery vehicle or use at several different locations.

Conversely, if the warehouse wraps standard pallets steadily every day, mini equipment will quickly become a bottleneck and tire people out as described above. Common faults when using a mini stretch wrapper

The three faults below are common with hand wrapping and mini machines, and can all be fixed on the spot. If you must hand wrap a lot, you can ease the load on workers by rotating who does the wrapping and choosing a tool with a brake so they do not have to grip hard to hold the tension.

Film snaps while wrapping

The cause is usually pulling too hard or using film that is too thin for a load with sharp edges. Reduce the pull or loosen the brake, cover sharp corners with a liner, or switch to thicker film for that kind of load.

Uneven wrapping, gaps at the corners

This fault comes from walking too fast or from wraps that do not overlap enough. Each wrap must overlap the previous one; the calculation above assumes an overlap of about half the film width, and always add a few extra wraps at the base so the film grips the pallet.

Mini rotary-table machine vibrates

A product placed off-centre on the table creates an eccentric force that makes the machine vibrate. Place the product in the middle of the table and slow the speed if the product is very asymmetrical.
