Pine wood is the primary raw material used to manufacture pine wood pallets. To estimate the total production cost of a pine wood pallet, you first need to know how pine wood is priced per cubic meter. This guide covers current pine wood prices (both imported and domestic), how to calculate volume in m3, and how to work out the full cost of making a pallet from scratch.
Why pine wood suits pallet production
- Easy to machine: Pine has moderate hardness, making it straightforward to saw, plane, and shape into pallet boards and stringers.
- Natural insect resistance: The resin content in pine helps repel wood-boring insects and reduces the risk of infestation during storage and transport.
- Cost-competitive: Pine is priced lower than many hardwoods, making it the standard choice for industrial and export wood pallets.

How to calculate cubic meters and pallet production cost
Calculating wood volume in m3
Example 1: What is 1 cubic meter of wood?
One cubic meter (1 m3) of wood occupies a space of 1 m (length) x 1 m (width) x 1 m (height).
Example 2: How many boards fit in 1 m3 if each board is 2 x 7 x 120 cm?
- Convert to meters: 0.02 m x 0.07 m x 1.2 m = 0.00168 m3 per board.
- Boards per m3: 1 / 0.00168 = approximately 595 boards.
Example 3: What volume do 700 boards of 2 x 7 x 120 cm represent?
- 0.02 x 0.07 x 1.2 x 700 = 1.176 m3.
Calculating pallet production cost
The example below is based on a standard single-face pine pallet using two board sizes:
| Component | Description | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Top deck boards | Pine 17 x 70 x 1200 mm | 10 boards at 2,450,000 VND/m3 |
| Stringers | Pine 17 x 70 x 1200 mm | 3 pieces |
| Blocks | Pine 30 x 90 x 1200 mm | 3 pieces at 3,500,000 VND/m3 |
| Material subtotal | All wood components | ~79,500 VND |
| Nails and fasteners | Hardware cost | 20,000 VND |
| Total per pallet | Excluding VAT | ~100,000 VND |
This is an indicative cost based on material prices at the time of writing. Labor, waste allowance, and transport are not included. Actual production cost will vary with board size, pallet design, and current wood prices.

Frequently asked questions about pine wood pricing
1. How much does 1 cubic meter of pine wood cost in Vietnam?
Imported pine (Chilean, New Zealand, Swedish, Finnish) runs USD 230-290 per m3 (CIF Vietnam). Domestic pine costs VND 1,500,000-5,000,000 per m3 depending on grade, region, and supplier.
2. What factors affect the price of pine wood?
Key factors include the country of origin, whether the wood is domestic or imported, moisture content, grade (clear vs. knotty), board dimensions, and current exchange rates for imported stock.
3. How do I calculate how many pine boards are in one cubic meter?
Multiply the board’s three dimensions in meters (thickness x width x length) to get volume per piece, then divide 1 by that figure. For a 2 x 7 x 120 cm board: 0.02 x 0.07 x 1.2 = 0.00168 m3, so about 595 boards per m3.
4. What is a typical pallet production cost using pine wood?
A standard single-face pine pallet (10 deck boards + 3 stringers + 3 blocks) costs approximately 100,000 VND in raw materials and nails, excluding VAT, labor, and transport. Costs vary with design and current wood prices.
5. Why is pine wood the most common choice for pallets?
Pine is easy to saw and nail, lighter than most hardwoods, naturally resin-rich which resists insects, and priced competitively for industrial-scale pallet production.
6. Does ICD Vietnam supply pine wood or only finished pallets?
ICD Vietnam supplies both finished pine wood pallets and can advise on sourcing. Contact us with your pallet specification - dimensions, load capacity, quantity - and we will provide a quote with current pricing.
