Plastic pallets are not simply a tool for moving goods. In sensitive industries such as pharmaceuticals and food, choosing the right plastic pallet is a strategic decision that directly affects product safety and brand reputation.
ICD supplies HACCP/GMP-certified plastic pallets imported from Malaysia for use in the pharmaceutical and food industries.
With more than 15 years of experience in the pallet industry, I have worked with many businesses and gained a thorough understanding of the specific requirements in these sectors.
What Do the Pharma and Food Industries Require from Plastic Pallets?
When it comes to pharmaceuticals and food, hygiene and safety are always the top priority. Even a minor lapse in storage or transportation can seriously affect consumer health.
Plastic pallets - though seemingly simple tools - play a decisive role in protecting products from harmful environmental factors.
For this reason, choosing the right pallet is a strategic step that cannot be taken lightly.
In the pharmaceutical and food industries, closed-deck plastic pallets are the standard choice.
1. Easy and thorough cleaning: This is the number one criterion. Pallets must have a smooth surface with no small crevices where dust or bacteria can hide.
They need to be water-resistant, mould-resistant, and easy to clean and sterilise with specialist chemicals.
2. Safe materials: These pallets are typically manufactured from virgin HDPE or virgin PP. This ensures the pallets contain no harmful substances and will not contaminate products.
3. Appropriate dimensions: Pallets must be sized to match your products, handling equipment, and storage space. They should be compatible with standard containers and forklifts. Common sizes are 1100x1100mm, 1200x1000mm, and 1200x1200mm. Pallet height should also be considered to optimise warehouse space.

4. Load capacity to meet requirements: Choose pallets with a load capacity suited to the weight of your goods. Both static load (at rest) and dynamic load (in transit) must be considered. From experience, the dynamic load rating should be 25-30% higher than the actual cargo weight to ensure safety. Pallets with a capacity of 1-3 tonnes are recommended depending on specific needs.
5. Outstanding durability: Prioritise pallets with high durability and good impact resistance to keep goods safe during transportation. Pallets should have a reinforced structure with rounded corners and edges to prevent damage. Heat resistance and UV protection are also important factors for outdoor use. High-quality plastic pallets have an average lifespan of 5-10 years, delivering long-term economic value.
6. Optimal hygiene performance: Plastic pallets must be easy to clean and disinfect, meeting the strict hygiene requirements of the pharmaceutical industry. The pallet surface should be smooth with no deep grooves that accumulate dirt. The material must withstand common cleaning chemicals. The design should include drainage holes for quick and thorough cleaning and drying.
7. No particle generation: Unlike wooden pallets that can produce splinters and wood chips, plastic pallets generate zero particles. This is a critical factor for meeting cleanroom standards where particulate control is essential.
Superior Properties of Plastic Pallets in Pharma and Food
Plastic pallets are manufactured from virgin HDPE - a safe, metal-free material approved for food and pharmaceutical contact. With a smooth, closed surface, they are easy to wipe down, wash, and sanitise before reuse, ensuring absolute safety.

In addition, plastic pallets can be enhanced with antibacterial additives to inhibit the growth of harmful moulds and bacteria. They do not absorb pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, or Listeria, minimising the risk of cross-contamination. Notably, plastic pallets do not require heat treatment or fumigation under the ISPM-15 standard, are unaffected by mould and harmful substances, and produce no unpleasant odours - saving time and cost in import/export operations.
Which Pallet Types Are Most Recommended?
There are many types of plastic pallets on the market. However, the two types below are most commonly recommended for clients in the pharmaceutical and food sectors:
- Closed-deck pallets: This is the optimal choice. With a fully sealed surface, this type offers excellent resistance to water and contamination. Cleaning and disinfection are fast and effective.
- Open-deck (mesh) pallets: With ventilation holes, this type is well-suited for products that require airflow. They still meet hygiene requirements, drain quickly when washed, and are available at a more affordable price point.
That said, closed-deck plastic pallets remain the preferred option in the industry.
Compliance with International Standards
Beyond technical factors, compliance with international standards is a prerequisite for product circulation - especially for export:
- HACCP: Plastic pallets used in food supply chains must comply with HACCP principles.
- GMP: For the pharmaceutical industry, GMP is the gold standard. Pallets must be treated as part of the manufacturing system and must meet strict quality and safety requirements.
- GSP (Good Storage Practice): Good Storage Practice standards are also critical, ensuring optimal storage conditions - particularly for pharmaceutical products.
Choosing the right plastic pallet is not an arbitrary decision. It is a serious investment that reflects a business’s professionalism and responsibility. After more than a decade of experience, I have found that the most successful businesses are always those who invest wisely in details that may seem minor but make a significant difference.
