A KLT (Kleinladungsträger, German for “small load carrier”) is the European automotive standard plastic tote defined by VDA 4500. KLT bins are built on a 600×400 mm module and its multiples/fractions, to fit pallets, racks and automated conveyors precisely in Just-In-Time (JIT) production lines.
The VDA 4500 standard and module
VDA 4500, issued by the German automotive association, defines bin sizes, load ratings and features so every parts supplier uses one common system. Every KLT is based on the 600×400 mm footprint, so they fit a 1,200×800 mm or 1,200×1,000 mm pallet with no wasted area - the foundation for automating automotive parts storage and transport.
Common KLT sizes
| KLT code | Footprint (mm) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| KLT 3147 / 4147 | 300×200 / 400×300 | Small totes for parts and fasteners |
| KLT 4280 / 6147 | 400×300 / 600×400 | Mid size and the standard module |
| KLT 6280 | 600×400 | Tall version, more capacity |
| RKLT | 600×400 | Rigid solid-wall version, higher load than mesh |
Features of a KLT bin
KLT bins have smooth walls, a flat base and rounded corners for easy cleaning and no trapped parts; a fixed label area for scanning on the line; and they stack when full and nest when empty to save space. ESD (anti-static) versions are used for sensitive electronics. Thanks to uniform sizing, KLT bins run smoothly on conveyors, robots and automated storage (AS/RS).
KLT vs a normal plastic bin
| Criterion | KLT (VDA 4500) | Normal plastic bin |
|---|---|---|
| Sizing | Standardised on the 600×400 module | Varied, no required standard |
| Label & scanning | Fixed label area for automation | Maker-dependent |
| Used for | Automotive JIT lines, automated storage | General storage and transport |
Why does the auto industry use KLT?
Vehicle assembly lines need parts delivered just in time and in exact counts (JIT). Standardised KLT bins let parts travel from supplier to assembly line without repacking, cutting counting errors, optimising space and fitting automation. That is why most automotive parts suppliers are required to use KLT by the carmakers. ICD supplies industrial plastic crates and component trays and advises on standardised specs for warehouses and supply lines.

Frequently asked questions
What does KLT stand for?
KLT is Kleinladungsträger in German, meaning “small load carrier” - the automotive standard plastic tote per VDA 4500.
What is the KLT module size?
It is 600×400 mm; every KLT code is based on this module or its multiples/fractions to fit pallets and conveyors.
What is an RKLT?
A rigid solid-wall KLT with higher load capacity than mesh-wall versions, used for heavy parts or more enclosed protection.
What is an ESD KLT for?
The ESD (anti-static) version is used to hold electronics sensitive to electrostatic discharge on the assembly line.
How is a KLT different from a normal bin?
A KLT is standardised by VDA 4500 (sizes, labels, precise stacking/nesting) for automated JIT lines, while normal bins are not bound to this standard.
Why must auto suppliers use KLT?
Carmakers require standardisation so parts move straight from supplier to assembly line without repacking, fitting JIT lines.
