The case for buying used comes down to three practical points.

Lower upfront cost. A quality used unit from a Japanese or European brand typically costs 30-70% less than the equivalent new model - significant capital for a small or medium operation.

Proven build quality. Older Japanese-market units often have heavier-gauge steel frames and more robust hydraulic assemblies than budget new units at similar price points. Worn appearance does not equal worn-out structure.

Immediate availability. The used equipment market in Hanoi is active. You can find a wide range of load capacities and lift heights without waiting for an import order.

10-point inspection before you buy (competitors cover only 3-4)

1. Serial number depth over 0.3 mm - run a fingernail across it. Shallow engraving may mean the number was re-stamped.
2. Production year matches wear level - a 2020 unit with forks worn 50% is a red flag. The unit may have had its label swapped.
3. No weld repairs on the ram cylinder - inspect the full length of the cylinder body. A weld mark means the cylinder has been replaced.
4. Wheels wear evenly - uneven wear over 3 mm indicates a bent axle or twisted frame.
5. Piston rod has no pits or scoring - use a torch and rotate 360 degrees. Pitting means a new seal will still leak within three months.
6. Full-load hold test: drop less than 1 cm in 5 minutes - the only reliable seal test. Load to rated capacity and time the drop.
7. Pump handle effort within spec at full load - a 2.5-tonne unit should require 25-30 kg of handle force. Over 35 kg means a weak pump.
8. Hand brake holds a loaded pallet on a 3-degree slope - test the brake on an actual incline, do not rely on the seller’s word.
9. No micro-cracks in the frame - use a magnifying glass on all four fork edges and weld joints.
10. Documentation available - invoice, import record, or previous owner paperwork. Avoids stolen or smuggled equipment.

Depreciation formula: how ICD engineers price used units

Used price = New price x (1 - Depreciation per year)^Years x Condition factor

• Depreciation per year: 12-15% for manual pallet jacks (higher than 8-10% for electric models)
• Condition factor:
  • Grade A (like new, under 1 year use): 0.9-1.0
  • Grade B (light use, 1-3 years, no major repairs): 0.75-0.85
  • Grade C (heavy use, 3-5 years, seals replaced): 0.55-0.7
  • Grade D (5+ years, major repairs): 0.3-0.5

Example: Xilin BF-III 2.5T new price 4,500,000 VND, used 3 years, Grade B (seals intact):
Price = 4,500,000 x (1 - 0.13)^3 x 0.8 = 4,500,000 x 0.659 x 0.8 = 2,370,000 VND
