Author: Le Van Thang, Director of ICD Vietnam – 15 years supplying stretch film to factories.
PE stretch film (LLDPE) holds a pallet load together for transit and storage. ICD makes hand rolls and machine rolls in 500 mm width, from the 1.8 kg MPE21 hand roll to the 14 kg MPE150 machine roll and the high-strength MPEM (6-17 kg), in clear, black and blue. Film is matched to hand wrapping or to a stretch wrapping machine – the two must suit each other to avoid waste and breakage. See the full toolkit on the packaging supplies page.
Choose PE stretch film when:
- Every palletised shipment: film is the cheapest way to stop a load shifting and collapsing.
- Hand or machine wrapping: light hand rolls for low volume, machine rolls for throughput.
- Colour coding or concealment: black hides contents, blue colour-codes lines.
1. Stretch film range
| Model | Type | Width | Roll weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| MPE21 | Hand roll (clear/black/blue) | 500 mm | 1.8 kg |
| MPE30 / 38 / 50 | Hand roll | 500 mm | 2.5 / 3.3 / 4.5 kg |
| MPE150 | Machine roll | 500 mm | 14 kg |
| MPEM (ultra strong) | Machine roll | 500 mm | 6-17 kg |

2. Pre-stretch and gauge – the two numbers that set film cost
Two factors decide how much film a pallet actually costs. Pre-stretch is how much the film is elongated before it hits the load: a machine roll with a pre-stretch head can stretch film up to 250-300%, so one metre of film becomes three metres of wrap – hand wrapping rarely exceeds 30-50%. That is why a machine roll on a pre-stretch wrapper costs far less per pallet than a hand roll, once volume justifies the machine.
Gauge (thickness) matches film strength to load: light, stable loads need thin film, while heavy, sharp or unstable loads need a thicker or ultra-strength MPEM film to avoid punctures and load collapse. The common mistake is using one thickness for everything – too thin and loads fail, too thick and you overpay. Match the model to the load and the wrapping method; for machine lines, always use machine-grade rolls, not hand rolls.
3. Frequently asked questions
1. Hand roll or machine roll?
Hand rolls (1.8-4.5 kg) for low volume; machine rolls (MPE150, MPEM) for a wrapping machine and higher throughput with lower film cost per pallet.
2. What does pre-stretch save?
A pre-stretch machine elongates film up to 250-300%, cutting film use per pallet versus hand wrapping (30-50%).
3. Which thickness do I need?
Thin for light stable loads; thicker or MPEM ultra-strength for heavy, sharp or unstable loads. We advise by load.
4. Do you supply black or coloured film?
Yes – clear, black (conceals contents) and blue (colour coding).
