Author: Le Van Thang, Director of ICD Vietnam – 15 years supplying bulk handling containers.
Large plastic crates are high-volume containers for bulk goods, work-in-progress and heavy single loads that a standard tote cannot hold. ICD supplies them in solid and mesh walls, capacities well above the EU 52-litre range, in PP and HDPE. They bridge the gap between a hand tote and a full pallet box. For small picking totes use solid bins; for full unit loads with sidewalls see container pallets. See all types on the plastic crates page.
Choose large crates when:
- Bulk goods and WIP: one container replaces many small totes, cutting handling moves.
- Heavy or oversized items: thick walls and a reinforced base carry the load.
- Forklift or pallet-truck handling: sized to move full, not hand-carried.

2. When a large crate beats more small totes
The hidden cost of small totes is handling moves. If a workstation fills ten 26-litre boxes a shift, that is ten lifts, ten scans and ten put-aways; one large crate of the same volume is a single move. For bulk WIP between stations, harvested produce in volume, or recycling and offcut collection, the large crate cuts labour and floor clutter.
The trade-off is reach and ergonomics: a full large crate is too heavy to hand-carry, so it needs a forklift or pallet truck and a clear path. Choose large crates where volume per move matters and mechanical handling is available; keep small bins where operators pick by hand at the line. For loads that must also be palletised and forked as a unit, a container pallet with sidewalls may fit better.
3. Frequently asked questions
1. How large do they get?
Well above the EU 52-litre range; exact sizes vary by model. Contact us with your volume requirement.
2. Solid or mesh walls?
Solid to contain loose or wet bulk; mesh for produce and goods that must drain or breathe.
3. Can a forklift handle them?
Yes – large crates are sized for forklift or pallet-truck handling, not hand carrying.
4. Are they stackable?
Many large crates stack or stack-nest; confirm loaded stacking for the specific model.
