Spill containment pallets are HDPE pallets with a built-in sump that catches leaks and drips from drums of chemicals, oil, paint or solvent. The grated top keeps drums dry while any leak collects in the sump below for safe disposal. Choose spill containment pallets when:
- Storing drums of hazardous liquid: the sump contains leaks before they reach the floor or drain.
- Meeting environmental and safety rules: bunding is required for chemical, oil and solvent storage.
- Chemical-resistant, non-corroding base: HDPE will not rust or react like a steel bund.

2. How to size the sump – the rule auditors check
The sump is not just a tray; its volume must meet a containment rule. The widely used standard is that secondary containment must hold the greater of: 110% of the largest single container, or 10% of the total volume stored on the unit.
Worked example: one 200-litre drum needs 110% of 200 = 220 litres of containment if taken on the single-drum rule – so a 60-litre sump suits part-full or smaller containers, while full 200L drums of regulated liquid may require a higher-wall model or a separate bund. For two 200L drums (400L total), the 10% rule gives 40L, but the 110%-of-largest rule gives 220L and governs. Always size to the larger figure and confirm the specific regulation for your chemical class. When in doubt, contact us with the drum size and count and we will recommend the model.

4. Frequently asked questions
1. How big does the sump need to be?
The greater of 110% of the largest container or 10% of total stored volume. For full 200L drums of regulated liquid, confirm the model meets the 110% rule for your chemical class.
2. Why HDPE and not steel?
Virgin HDPE resists most chemicals, oils and solvents and will not rust or corrode like a steel bund, so it lasts longer with aggressive liquids.
3. How many drums per pallet?
1, 2 or 4 x 200L drums depending on the model. Stay within the 500 kg dynamic and 1,500 kg static ratings.
4. Can the sump be cleaned?
Yes – the grate lifts out so you can drain and clean the sump after a spill.
