Anti-static danpla (ESD danpla) is a hollow PP plastic sheet with added carbon black or conductive agent, bringing surface resistance to the 10⁴-10¹¹ Ω range to protect electronic components from electrostatic discharge. It is a mandatory material in EPA (Electrostatic Protected Area) zones - assembling boards, chips and sensitive components. Its characteristic color is black due to carbon black.
How Does Static Electricity Damage Components?
When two materials rub or touch then separate, static charge accumulates on the surface. For a person walking on an ordinary plastic floor, the static voltage can reach 2,000-35,000V. The naked eye cannot sense levels below 3,500V, but an electronic chip is damaged at just 10-100V - discharge happens in nanoseconds, leaving an invisible micro-puncture in the circuit that causes intermittent failures after a few weeks of use.
Real-world damage at Vietnamese electronics plants: the ESD-caused failure rate accounts for 8-20% of total electronic-product failures depending on the industry. For a plant producing 1 million boards/year, uncontrolled ESD can damage 80,000-200,000 boards - equivalent to VND 4-20 billion/year in losses just from wrong packaging materials.

Conductive vs Dissipative - Which to Choose?
Conductive (resistance 10⁴-10⁶ Ω): Discharges extremely fast, suitable for environments needing immediate charge removal. Disadvantage: if there is a power source in contact, current can flow through and pose a danger. Use for: EPA-zone flooring, lining for machinery that can build up charge.
Dissipative (resistance 10⁶-10¹¹ Ω): Discharges more slowly but is safer for people. This is the standard choice for most electronic-component packaging applications. Use for: component boxes, box dividers, chip trays, EPA workbench mats.
Quick rule: if unsure which to choose, ask the engineering department what the specific surface-resistance requirement is. If they say “just standard anti-static” → dissipative. If they require immediate discharge at the 10⁴ Ω level → conductive.
ESD Danpla vs ESD Cardboard
| Criterion | ESD Cardboard | ESD Danpla |
|---|---|---|
| Number of uses | 1-3 times | 50-100 times |
| Water resistance | No - loses conductivity when damp | Good - stable in high humidity |
| Cleaning | Cannot be wiped clean | Wipe clean with 70% IPA alcohol |
| Resistance stability over time | Degrades after 1-2 uses | Stable over 50-100 uses |
| Cost per use | High (ESD cardboard is 2-3x dearer than plain cardboard) | 5-8x lower long-term |
| Fit for international customer audits | Needs checking each use | Checked per batch, more stable |
Real Applications in Electronics Plants
Parts box: A black ESD danpla box made from 4mm sheet, with internal dividers to separate component types. Common size: 600x400x280mm or per the production line’s tray standard. ESD boxes usually have the component name printed in UV ink directly on the surface.
Bench mat: A 3mm ESD danpla sheet sized 600x900mm laid on the assembly bench, grounded via an earthing cord. It replaces ESD rubber bench mats that cost 3-5x more and are stiffer, while being easier to clean.
Divider: ESD danpla sheets cut into strips and fitted into a box to create compartments for each component. It replaces ESD PS plastic dividers or ESD foam dividers that are more expensive and less durable.
ESD slip sheet: A 3-4mm ESD danpla sheet placed between component tray layers when stacking pallets for transport. It protects components from ESD during internal and inter-plant transport.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Is black danpla always anti-static?
No. Black is just a common indicator of ESD danpla but is not a mandatory standard. Ordinary black danpla (without ESD additive) also exists. You must check the surface resistance with an ESD meter or request a test certificate from the supplier.
2. Does ESD danpla need grounding?
It depends on the application. Dissipative ESD danpla used as a container does not need grounding - charge dissipates through the surface. But if used as EPA-zone flooring or a workbench, it must be grounded properly per IEC 61340-5-1 to be effective.
3. Can ESD danpla be cleaned with alcohol?
Yes. 70% IPA alcohol is the most common solvent for cleaning ESD danpla - safe for both the material and the ESD properties. Avoid strong solvents such as acetone or MEK, which can damage the surface and change the resistance.
4. Does ICD Vietnam provide ESD certification per batch?
Yes. Every batch of ESD danpla comes with a surface-resistance test report per IEC 61340-5-1, with a lot number and production date for traceability.
