Cold Storage and Freezer Plastic Crates: Materials That Survive Deep Sub-Zero

June 6, 2026 — Lê Văn Thăng

Cold storage crates must survive sub-zero cold without cracking. Virgin HDPE works to -40C; PP cracks below -10C. See materials, specs and selection.

Crates and stack-nest containers used in cold rooms and seafood freezing must withstand deep sub-zero temperatures without turning brittle and cracking. Ordinary PP cracks below -10C, while seafood blast freezers run at -18C to -40C. Choose the wrong material and the crate shatters on impact in the freezer, dropping product and creating a safety hazard. This guide covers cold-resistant materials, the temperature limit of each plastic, how to prevent thermal shock when moving in and out of the freezer, and ICD crate specifications for the seafood and frozen processing industry.

Why ordinary plastic turns brittle in the freezer

As temperature drops, plastic loses its flexibility and becomes brittle. Each type of plastic has a different brittleness threshold. Below that point, even a light impact during handling in the freezer can crack the crate or break a corner. This is why ordinary plastic crates perform well in chill rooms but fail quickly in blast freezers.

Cold-resistant materials: HDPE, PP and temperature limits

Material Working temperature Suitable freezer use
Virgin HDPE -40C to 80C Best for deep freezing
PP copolymer -20C to 100C Chill rooms, light freezing; cracks below -10C on impact
Recycled HDPE Brittle below -5C Not for cold storage
ABS -20C to 85C Brittle at deep sub-zero, not for freezers

Selection rule: seafood blast freezers at -18C to -40C must use virgin HDPE. PP only suits chill rooms and light freezing. Never use recycled plastic or ABS for deep sub-zero conditions.

ICD crates and stack-nest containers for seafood freezers

ICD line Dimensions (mm) Freezer application
Vented HDPE crate 610 x 420 x 100 Freezing tray for fish and shrimp, drains melt water
Tall vented HDPE crate 610 x 420 x 250 High-volume seafood storage
Solid HDPE crate with lid Per specification Frozen product storage, prevents moisture loss

Vented crates suit freezing because they drain melt water and let cold air circulate quickly; solid crates with lids suit storage of already-frozen product, preventing sublimation and moisture loss. Choose virgin HDPE for sub-zero resistance and sanitising wash-down.

Preventing thermal shock when moving in and out of the freezer

Why thermal shock damages crates

A crate moved suddenly from a -25C freezer out to 30C ambient endures a large temperature swing, causing uneven expansion and condensation. Repeated many times, this fatigues the plastic and shortens its life, especially for materials other than virgin HDPE.

How to reduce thermal shock

Limit repeated in-and-out cycles with the same crate; use an intermediate temperature staging area where available; and choose virgin HDPE for its wide working range and better tolerance of temperature swings. Avoid hard impacts immediately after a crate leaves the freezer, while the plastic is still cold and brittle.

Choosing crates by seafood processing stage

Stage Suitable crate Reason
Receiving, pre-processing Vented HDPE crate with ice Drains water, keeps cold with ice
IQF and block freezing Vented HDPE freezing tray Even cold air flow, fast freezing
Freezer storage Solid HDPE crate with lid Prevents moisture loss, stacks well
Frozen transport Insulated solid crate Retains cold when outside the freezer

Frequently asked questions about cold storage plastic crates

1. How cold can a plastic crate handle?

It depends on the material. Virgin HDPE withstands down to -40C, suiting deep freezing. PP copolymer only reaches -20C and cracks below -10C on impact. Recycled plastic and ABS turn brittle at deep sub-zero and should not be used in freezers.

2. Which plastic crate should a seafood freezer use?

Use virgin HDPE. Vented crates for freezing (drain melt water, fast cold air flow), and solid crates with lids for storing already-frozen product to prevent moisture loss. Avoid PP, recycled plastic and ABS.

3. Why do ordinary plastic crates crack in the freezer?

Because plastic loses flexibility and turns brittle below its own threshold. PP becomes brittle below -10C, so even a light impact during handling in the freezer cracks it or breaks a corner. Virgin HDPE stays flexible down to -40C and avoids this problem.

4. Vented or solid crates for freezing?

Vented crates are better for the freezing stage because draining melt water and circulating cold air give fast, even freezing. Solid crates with lids are better for storing already-frozen product because they prevent sublimation and moisture loss. Each suits a different stage.

5. How do I avoid crate damage from thermal shock?

Limit repeated in-and-out cycles with the same crate, use an intermediate temperature staging area where available, and choose virgin HDPE for its wide working range. Avoid hard impacts immediately after a crate leaves the freezer while the plastic is still brittle.
