Many people think PE film is simply a flimsy thin layer of plastic used to wrap things. But for me, after more than 15 years working in the materials industry, PE film is a whole diverse world with countless amazing applications. From the roll of stretch film keeping a shipment worth billions of dong safe, to the thin film protecting a sterile medical device, each type has its own ‘mission.’ Understanding them is like a chef understanding spices. This article is what I have distilled about that world.

Fundamentally, the strength and properties of PE film do not come from anything complex, but from a single factor: the density of the plastic pellets. This is the most core classification method.
- LDPE film (Low-Density Polyethylene): Think of it as the most “friendly” and flexible PE film. It is transparent, stretches well, and is often used as food wrap, thin plastic bags, or packaging that does not require high strength.
- HDPE film (High-Density Polyethylene): This is the “tougher” sibling. HDPE makes hard, durable products with better impact resistance, for example plastic cans, milk bottles or the thick, crinkly supermarket bags.
- LLDPE film (Linear Low-Density Polyethylene): This can be seen as the “hero” of the logistics industry. In warehousing, we almost exclusively trust LLDPE film for wrapping pallets. Its toughness and puncture resistance are irreplaceable for keeping shipments worth hundreds of millions of dong safe.
2. Classification by application and technical function
From the 3 base types above, modern technology has created countless variants to meet specific needs.
- Self-clinging PE film (Stretch wrap / Stretch film): The magic is that it can cling to itself without any adhesive. This very property lets it tighten and secure packages on a pallet into a solid, transport-safe block.
- Heat-shrink PE film (Shrink Film): Many people confuse this with stretch wrap. Shrink film shrinks and hugs the product tightly when exposed to high heat, creating a sturdy protective layer, often used to wrap products such as soft-drink packs, book boxes and cosmetic boxes.
- Waterproof PE film: This is a basic property of plastic, but optimized in thickness and width for use as agricultural mulch film (bed covering), pond lining, or waterproof lining for construction works.
- UV-resistant PE film: By adding special additives, manufacturers create film that can withstand harsh sunlight for a long time without becoming brittle or cracking. It is an indispensable material for greenhouse film.
- Anti-static PE film: Characteristically pink or black, blended with carbon to dissipate static electricity, specialized for packaging sensitive electronic components.
- Biodegradable PE film: This is the direction of the future. By adding additives that accelerate decomposition, a film is created that breaks down faster in the environment. This is a step forward, but we must understand that “breaking down” into small fragments is not yet full “biodegradation.”
3. Classification by product specification
When you order, the supplier will ask you for these specs.
- By thickness (micrometers): The thickness of PE film is measured in “microns.” A thin PE film may be only 10-15 microns, while a thick industrial PE film roll can reach 50-100 microns.
- By product form: PE film can be supplied as large rolls, sheets, or fabricated into bags of various sizes.
- By color and printing: Besides the natural transparent color, PE film also comes in common colors such as black (helping block sunlight and conceal goods). Modern printing technology also allows the creation of PE film printed with patterns and logos, enhancing aesthetics and brand recognition.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. How are shrink film and stretch wrap (stretch film) different?
These are two completely different types. Stretch wrap (stretch film) is self-clinging and stretchy to tighten goods. Shrink film does not cling; it shrinks and hugs the product tightly when heated (using a heat gun).
2. How do I know how many microns of PE film I need?
This depends on the application. Food wrap is usually about 8-10 microns thick. Hand stretch wrap is usually 17 microns, while machine wrap can be 20-23 microns. Agricultural mulch film needs greater thickness, possibly 30-150 microns.
3. What is the functional difference between virgin and recycled PE film?
Virgin PE film has the highest quality, is transparent and food-safe. Recycled PE film is usually more opaque, may contain some impurities and odor, and is not used for direct food contact, but it is an economical choice for applications such as trash bags or outer packaging.
