HDPE Industrial Mixing Tanks: Sizes, Applications and How to Choose

Large HDPE round tanks hold liquids from 100L to 3000L, with 200L and 500L the most common. Virgin HDPE resists chemicals, withstands outdoor UV, and lasts 10-15 years when not exposed to strong solvents. The round shape carries liquid pressure better than a rectangular box of the same capacity because it spreads stress evenly. This guide covers specifications by capacity band, real applications by industry, and the mistakes to avoid when buying.

In years of advising industrial buyers, I have found most purchasers do not know the key difference between blow-molded HDPE round tanks and rotational-molded (rotomold) tanks. These two forming technologies produce completely different wall thickness and capacity limits. The confusion leads to the wrong choice, especially for chemical storage or capacities above 1000L. This article sets out the technical specs by capacity band, the practical use cases per industry, and how to avoid the common first-time buyer errors.

Why round tanks, not rectangular, are used for liquids

The answer lies in basic physics: a circle distributes pressure most evenly. When full of liquid, a tank must resist internal pressure pushing outward in every direction. In a rectangular tank, stress concentrates at the corners and flat edges, the mechanical weak points of that design. A round tank spreads pressure evenly around its full circumference, so a thinner wall withstands the same load.

The practical result: a 200L HDPE round tank with an average wall of 6-8mm is safer than a 200L rectangular tank with an 8-10mm wall when holding dense liquids or chemicals. This is why drums, chemical storage tanks, and aquaculture basins all use a round shape rather than a box.

The only notable drawback is lower space efficiency. When stored, the gaps between round tanks can take up to 21% of floor area, a point to factor into warehouse layout planning.

Sizes and technical specifications by capacity

Vietnamese manufacturers now supply HDPE round tanks in fairly standardized capacity bands. Below are the most common reference specifications on the market. Note that dimensions can vary by plus/minus 2-3% depending on the maker.

Important note on height: 200L and 500L tanks often have a mushroom shape, wider at the mouth than the base. This makes interior cleaning easier but increases the floor area taken compared with straight-walled tanks. When planning installation, measure by the mouth diameter, not the base diameter.

Blow molding or rotomold? The difference decides your use limits

Most buyers do not know HDPE round tanks are made by two completely different technologies, and the distinction directly affects the safe application limit.

Blow molding

Compressed air inflates molten plastic into a mold. The advantages are fast production and low cost. The drawback is uneven wall thickness: the mid-body is usually thinner than the mouth and base. The practical capacity limit is around 500L or below. It is most common for 100L-200L tanks.

Rotational molding (rotomold)

The mold is rotated multi-directionally in a heated oven, and HDPE powder coats the entire mold surface to form a uniform wall. The advantages are even walls, no weld seam, and suitability for large capacities from 500L to 5000L. Production cost is higher but durability is superior. This is the technology behind the 1000L-3000L tanks now common in wastewater treatment and large-scale aquaculture.

Real applications by industry

Large HDPE round tanks are widely used across four main industry groups in Vietnam, each with different technical requirements for capacity and HDPE grade.

Aquaculture

This is the most common application. Round tanks from 350L to 2000L serve as shrimp fry nursery basins, commercial fish tanks in greenhouses, or water treatment basins before supply to grow-out ponds. The mandatory requirement is HDPE free of toxic additives that will not change water pH. Aquaculture tanks are usually blue or black to limit algae growth in lit environments.

Industrial chemicals

HDPE tanks store and mix chemicals in textile dyeing, electroplating, paper production, and metal surface treatment. HDPE resists dilute acids, alkalis, inorganic salts, alcohol, and many solvents well. However, HDPE is unsuitable for some strong organic solvents such as MEK, THF, and toluene, so check a chemical compatibility chart before use.

Clean water and wastewater treatment

Rotomold tanks of 1000L-3000L are installed at pump stations, small wastewater plants, or as equalization basins. The advantage over concrete tanks is fast installation (1-2 days rather than 2-4 weeks), they can be relocated, do not leak, and need no waterproof coating.

Agriculture and biogas

Tanks of 500L-1000L are used for composting, holding fertilizer solution, or as household-scale biogas tanks. HDPE UV resistance and weatherability allow outdoor installation for many years without a roof.

Virgin or recycled HDPE: how to tell in practice

The Vietnamese HDPE round tank market shows large price gaps for the same capacity, sometimes up to 30-40%. Most of this gap comes from the quality of the HDPE resin. Virgin resin produces durable products safe for food and chemicals; recycled HDPE is cheaper but has weaker mechanical properties and is not guaranteed safe for food or aquaculture use.

Three common mistakes when buying HDPE round tanks

Mistake 1: Choosing capacity by feel, not real load

A 1000L tank full of water weighs exactly 1 tonne, plus the tank weight of ~40-50kg. The total load on the floor is over 1 tonne concentrated on a contact area roughly 1m in diameter. Many facilities install large tanks indoors without first checking the floor load capacity, especially dangerous on the second floor or higher, or on thin cement slabs.

Mistake 2: Using a blow-molded tank for dense chemicals or high loads

A 200L blow-molded tank has a vertical weld seam along the body, a clear mechanical weak point. When holding dense chemicals (specific gravity over 1.2) or placed outdoors through repeated thermal expansion, the seam can crack and split. For long-term chemical use, rotomold is the safer choice despite the higher price.

Mistake 3: Not budgeting for accessories

Large round tanks need extras: a bottom drain valve (ball or butterfly valve), a stand or steel frame if the ground is uneven, stainless or HDPE pipe fittings, and a lid if dust protection is needed. Total accessory cost can be 20-40% of the tank price, so include it in the budget from the start.

Integrating round tanks into storage and transport

Large HDPE round tanks are usually installed in a fixed position, but in some cases they must be moved or transported, especially when expanding a workshop or changing layout. Tanks of 500L and above are usually too heavy to handle by hand even when empty, so a forklift or a pallet truck with suitable holding hooks is needed. For Xilin forklift handling around tanks, allow clearance for the round footprint.

For a warehouse arranging many 200L-500L tanks, placing tanks on plastic warehouse pallets lets the forklift move them easily and creates clearance underneath to check for leaks. Choose a pallet with suitable load capacity: a 200L tank full of chemical at specific gravity 1.3 can weigh nearly 280kg.

When moving large HDPE tanks by truck, secure them with straps and stretch wrap around the group of tanks to prevent impact and shifting in transit. Round tanks tend to roll if not secured properly, a common accident when wheel chocks or correct lashing are not used.

1. How much does a 200L HDPE round tank cost?

In the Vietnamese market in 2026, a 200L HDPE round tank ranges from 350,000 VND to 650,000 VND per tank depending on resin quality (virgin or recycled), maker, and order quantity. Virgin HDPE rotomold tanks typically cost 30-50% more than recycled blow-molded tanks of the same capacity. Bulk orders of 20 tanks or more usually get a 10-15% discount off the retail price.

2. Can HDPE round tanks be used for food?

Yes, but only virgin HDPE tanks with a food-grade certificate. HDPE is plastic number 2, certified safe for food contact by the FDA and international food safety bodies. However, recycled HDPE tanks are not guaranteed food-grade because the recycled resin source cannot be controlled. For food applications, ask the supplier to confirm food-grade status clearly in writing.

3. How long do HDPE round tanks last outdoors?

Virgin HDPE with built-in UV-resistant additives can stay outdoors for 10-15 years without significant cracking or fading. To identify UV-protected tanks, makers usually mark UV stabilized on the product label.

4. How is a 1000L tank different from a 1000L water cistern?

A 1000L round tank and a 1000L water cistern are essentially the same product, differing mainly in industry naming. Cistern is used in fixed-installation contexts (water treatment, pumping), while tank is used when relocation is needed. Technically both use rotomold HDPE, with a bottom drain valve, lid, and air vent. The more significant difference is between a round tank and a vertical or underground tank, which differ fundamentally in shape and installation purpose.

5. Can HDPE tanks hold acid?

It depends on the acid type and concentration. HDPE resists sulfuric acid (H2SO4) up to 50%, hydrochloric acid (HCl) up to 35%, dilute acetic acid, and most low to medium concentration inorganic acids. HDPE is unsuitable for concentrated nitric acid (over 40%), chromic acid, and strong acid-oxidizer mixtures. For each specific chemical, consult an HDPE chemical resistance chart before deciding.
