Recycled HDPE Pellets: What Are They and Their Applications

rHDPE pellets: 2-5mm granules from recycled HDPE. Post-industrial grades retain 90-95% of virgin properties. Applications: pipes, bins, automotive, lower-cost pallets.

Recycled HDPE Pellets: What Are They and Their Applications

Reviewed and updated by ICD - Week 30/2026

Recycled HDPE pellets (rHDPE granules) are reprocessed high-density polyethylene made from washed, sorted and re-pelletised plastic waste. They are used to mould pallets, crates, pipes and non-food products, cutting cost and carbon versus virgin resin while keeping good strength.

Recycled HDPE pellets (also called rHDPE granules or HDPE recycle resin) are the processed output of HDPE recycling - uniform pellets ready for injection moulding, extrusion, or blow moulding into new products. They are the critical link between post-consumer HDPE waste and new manufactured goods.

What are recycled HDPE pellets?

After HDPE waste is collected, sorted, cleaned, and shredded, the resulting flakes are melt-extruded and cut into small cylindrical or spherical pellets - typically 2-5 mm diameter. These rHDPE pellets are the commercial form sold to manufacturers for processing into new products.

rHDPE pellets are classified by grade based on:

  • Source: Post-consumer (household waste) vs post-industrial (manufacturing scrap) - post-industrial is typically cleaner and more consistent
  • Color: Natural/undyed (from clean single-source feedstock) vs mixed/black (from blended color streams)
  • Melt Flow Index: Determines processing suitability (see related article on HDPE MFI)
  • Contamination level: Expressed as ash content (%) - lower is better for structural applications

Applications of recycled HDPE pellets

  • Pipes and drainage systems: Non-pressure drainage pipes and fittings - large-volume application for rHDPE
  • Plastic lumber and outdoor furniture: Park benches, boardwalk planks, garden edging - good use of dark-colored rHDPE
  • Industrial bins and waste containers: Where aesthetics are secondary to function
  • Agricultural products: Mulch film, irrigation pipes, plant pots
  • Automotive non-visible parts: Under-vehicle shields, battery cases
  • Lower-cost industrial pallets: Blends of rHDPE with virgin resin for cost-optimized pallets (non-food-contact use)

Recycled HDPE pellets in Vietnam

Vietnam has a growing informal and formal HDPE recycling sector. Post-industrial rHDPE from manufacturing waste is collected and processed by recyclers in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and the industrial zones of Binh Duong and Dong Nai. Post-consumer HDPE from household collection has lower quality due to contamination, but is increasingly collected through municipal programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can recycled HDPE pellets be used for food packaging?

Standard post-consumer rHDPE pellets are NOT approved for direct food contact packaging. Only HDPE processed through FDA/EFSA-authorized super-clean recycling processes can be used in food-contact applications. Post-industrial rHDPE from clean manufacturing waste may qualify with appropriate decontamination certification.

2. How do I know the quality of recycled HDPE pellets?

Key quality indicators: MFI (melt flow index) consistency, ash content (contamination), tensile strength test, and color consistency of a lot sample. Request a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) from the supplier showing these measured values.

3. Are ICD Vietnam pallets made from recycled HDPE?

ICD Vietnam pallets are manufactured from virgin HDPE or PP resin to ensure consistent mechanical performance, food-contact compliance, and the 2-year manufacturer warranty. Recycled-content pallets are available on request for non-food-contact applications.

Where recycled HDPE pellets are used

  • Plastic pallets and crates for logistics (non-food contact).
  • Pipes, drainage and construction profiles.
  • Outdoor furniture, planters and industrial parts.
  • Benefit: lower cost and carbon footprint vs virgin HDPE, with similar strength for most industrial uses.

Recycled HDPE pellet grades by source, color and price

Recycled HDPE pellets are graded by feedstock source, color and purity, and each grade maps to a typical price discount versus virgin resin. Color matters because dark, mixed-color rHDPE comes from blended waste streams and costs the least, while natural or single-color pellets need cleaner feedstock and command a higher price. The table below summarises the common rHDPE grades, their typical ash (contamination) level, price position and best-fit use.

rHDPE gradeSourceTypical ashPrice vs virginBest use
Natural / undyedClean post-industrialunder 1%10-20% lowerPipes, profiles, structural parts
Single-color (blue/green)Sorted post-consumer1-2%20-35% lowerChemical containers, drainage
Black / mixedBlended waste streams2-4%30-50% lowerBins, plastic lumber, low-cost pallets

For logistics buyers, the takeaway is to match grade to use. Black mixed rHDPE at 30-50% below virgin price is ideal for bins and non-food-contact industrial parts, but its variable ash content makes it unsuitable for load-bearing pallets that must keep consistent strength. For pallets handling goods and rack loads, virgin or clean post-industrial HDPE remains the safer choice - see ICD Vietnam plastic pallets for virgin-grade options. Need help choosing a grade?
