1. Is clear PP sheet the same as acrylic (PMMA)?

No. Acrylic (PMMA) has superior optical clarity (glass-like) but is brittle. PP sheet has slight haze but is much tougher, lighter, and more chemically resistant. For applications requiring high optical clarity, PET or acrylic is preferred; for toughness and chemical resistance, PP wins.

2. Can transparent PP sheet be thermoformed?

Transparent PP sheet competes directly with acrylic (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC) in display, signage and partition applications. Each material has a distinct profile across clarity, cost and fabrication behaviour - knowing these differences prevents over-specifying an expensive resin or under-specifying one that warps or yellows. Transparent PP Sheet Processing Methods

Transparent PP sheet in the 0.3-10 mm thickness range is compatible with four standard fabrication methods used in Vietnamese manufacturing and display production. Each method suits a different end shape and production volume - combining them in sequence is common for complex parts such as folded menu holders or branded dividers.

  • Laser cutting - Produces clean, sealed edges on sheets up to approximately 5 mm thick. Suitable for intricate shapes, custom logos and batch production. The laser heat fuses the cut edge, reducing the need for secondary finishing and preventing edge fraying common with mechanical blades.
  • Thermal bending - PP sheet softens and becomes formable between 100 and 130 degrees C, well below the degradation threshold. A strip heater or oven is used to localise heat along the bend line; the sheet is then held at the target angle until cool. This method is used for L-shaped document stands, three-sided display units and protective covers.
  • Ultrasonic welding - High-frequency vibration fuses PP surfaces without adhesive or solvent. The resulting joint is chemically clean - important for food-contact and pharmaceutical applications where adhesive residue is a compliance issue. Joint strength typically matches or exceeds the base material in shear loading.
  • Print adhesion - UV-curable and solvent-based inks adhere to PP sheet after corona or flame surface treatment, which raises the surface energy from approximately 29 mN/m to 38-42 mN/m. Without pre-treatment, most inks bead and peel within days. Treated transparent PP accepts four-colour offset and digital print for branded signage and menu inserts.
