In today’s flat logistics world, English is the common language. When working with foreign partners or reading technical documents, mastering specialist terminology not only demonstrates professionalism but also helps you avoid costly misunderstandings. I once saw a contract delayed simply because of confusion between “Pallet Jack” and “Stacker”. This article is the vocabulary list I have compiled, and I hope it will be a useful reference tool for you.
QUICK SUMMARY
- Direct answer: Forklift in English is “Forklift” or “Forklift Truck”. This is the most widely used term recognized worldwide.
- Comprehensive vocabulary: This article is a complete specialist dictionary providing English names for all common forklift types (hand pallet truck, aerial work platform, electric forklift…), detailed components (forks, mast, counterweight…) and related logistics terminology.
- Expert perspective: Practical insight on the importance of using correct terminology in international transactions and reading technical documents.
- Who is this for? An essential reference for students, engineers, warehouse staff, import/export personnel, and anyone working in the supply chain.
1. Forklift and general English terminology
When entering the logistics field, the first question you encounter when working with foreign documents is the names of equipment.
To answer directly: forklifts in English are most commonly called Forklift or Forklift Truck. In more academic technical documents you may also encounter the term Lift Truck.
However, the world of material handling equipment is not limited to the “Forklift”. Knowing the other names will make you far more effective at your work.
2. English names for common forklift types
Below is a list of the most common Xilin ICD forklift types you will encounter daily in modern warehouses.
- Hand pallet truck in English:
- Pallet Jack or Hand Pallet Truck (HPT). This is the name for the basic hand pallet truck, using manual effort to move pallet loads over short distances.
- Electric forklift in English:

- Electric Stacker / Walkie Stacker: Refers to electric forklifts operated by a person walking behind.
- Reach Truck: Refers to high-level stand-on electric forklifts capable of extending their forks deep into racking.
- Diesel forklift in English:

- Aerial work platform in English:
- Aerial Work Platform (AWP). This is the general term. In practice, two main types are referred to:
- Scissor Lift: Raises and lowers vertically.
- Boom Lift: Has an extendable articulating boom arm, highly flexible reach.

3. English names for key forklift components
Knowing component names will help you read technical drawings, order forklift spare parts, and communicate with maintenance engineers easily.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the difference between “Forklift” and “Stacker”?
“Forklift” is the general term and typically refers to sit-down counterbalanced forklifts with a large counterweight. “Stacker” (or Electric Stacker) usually refers to smaller electric forklifts without a cab - the operator either walks behind or stands on a small platform.
2. When should solid tires be used versus pneumatic tires?
Solid tires are more durable, puncture-proof, and suitable for flat indoor warehouse floors. Pneumatic tires provide better shock absorption and are suited for uneven surfaces or outdoor operation.
3. What is Load Center and why does it matter?
Load Center is the distance from the face of the fork carriage to the center of gravity of the load. A forklift’s stated rated capacity (e.g., 2.5 tonnes) is only valid at the standard load center (typically 500 mm or 600 mm). If an oversized load shifts the load center outward, the forklift’s actual safe lifting capacity decreases significantly - this can be hazardous.
4. What are the most common types of forklifts today?
5 main types: (1) Low-lift hand pallet truck - raises pallets up to 200 mm; (2) High-lift hand stacker - raises to 3 m; (3) Walkie electric stacker - walk-behind electric; (4) Sit-down/stand-on electric forklift - for large warehouses; (5) Reach truck - for high-bay racking above 5 m.
5. What should I consider when buying a forklift?
Select based on: rated load capacity (add 20% safety buffer), warehouse ceiling height, aisle width, usage frequency, budget, and warranty policy. Contact ICD for expert model selection advice.
