Spill Containment Pallet Dimensions, Materials and Regulations

June 6, 2026 — Lê Văn Thăng

Spill containment pallets: sizes for 1-, 2- and 4-drum models, PE/HDPE material, static load up to 2,700 kg, EPA SPCC compliance guide.

Spill containment pallets - also called chemical pallets - are the go-to solution for safely storing and handling hazardous liquids such as oils, solvents and industrial chemicals. ICD Vietnam supplies square and rectangular spill containment models in PE and HDPE, sized from a single drum up to four drums or an IBC. This guide covers standard dimensions, materials, load ratings, and the compliance requirements under EPA SPCC (USA) and Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources regulations.

Dimensions and materials

The first two factors to determine when selecting a spill containment pallet are size and material.

Pallets are made in a range of shapes and sizes to match the containers being stored, from standard 200-litre drums to large IBC totes.

The two most common formats are square spill pallets and rectangular spill pallets.

A typical four-drum square pallet measures 1,300 x 1,300 mm, which optimises floor space and keeps drums stable during storage.

Most spill containment pallets are manufactured from Polyethylene (PE) or High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE). Both materials resist attack from most acids, bases and oils, giving the pallet long service life in harsh environments without warping or cracking if a spill occurs.

Containment volume: classification by drum count

In industry, spill containment pallets are commonly identified by the number of drums they hold - for example a 1-drum pallet, a 2-drum pallet or a 4-drum pallet. This naming convention makes it straightforward for buyers to select the right model.

  • 1-drum spill pallet: Designed to hold a single 200-litre drum. Compact and easy to reposition, it suits spot storage or areas where drums are moved frequently. Containment sump capacity is approximately 200 litres.
  • 2-drum spill pallet: Holds two 200-litre drums side by side. Sump capacity is approximately 400 litres. Suitable for warehouses with moderate hazardous-liquid storage volumes.
  • 4-drum spill pallet: The largest standard model, holding four 200-litre drums with a sump capacity of up to 800 litres. The preferred solution for high-volume chemical storage areas.
  • Specialised IBC spill pallets are also available, with much larger sump volumes to suit industrial-scale operations.

Load ratings: the key factor for safe operation

When evaluating load ratings, two figures must be understood separately: static load and dynamic load.

Load type Definition Reference figure (4-drum model)
Static load Maximum weight the pallet can bear when stationary on the floor Up to 2,700 kg
Dynamic load Maximum weight when the pallet is being moved by a forklift Approx. 1,500 kg

Dynamic load is always lower than static load. Exceeding the dynamic rating while moving a loaded pallet can cause structural failure or tip-over. Always check both figures before selecting a model.

Regulations on spill containment pallets

Using correctly rated spill containment pallets helps facilities meet both international and Vietnamese compliance requirements.

Regulatory framework Key requirement How spill pallets help
EPA SPCC (USA) Facilities storing oil or hazardous liquids must have spill prevention, control and countermeasure plans in place Spill containment pallets capture leaks at source, satisfying secondary containment requirements under 40 CFR Part 112
Vietnam Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Regulations on occupational safety and environmental protection in chemical industries require hazardous-liquid control measures Spill pallets demonstrate compliance with current regulations and reduce legal liability in the event of a spill incident

Spill containment pallet size comparison by model

Model Dimensions (mm) Sump capacity Suitable for
1-drum 680 x 680 (typical) ~200 L Single 200-litre drum, spot storage
2-drum 1,300 x 680 (typical) ~400 L Two 200-litre drums, moderate storage
4-drum 1,300 x 1,300 ~800 L Four 200-litre drums, high-volume chemical areas
IBC pallet 1,300 x 1,300 or larger 1,000+ L 1,000-litre IBC totes, industrial scale

Dimensions vary by manufacturer. Confirm exact dimensions with ICD before ordering if space is constrained.

Frequently asked questions about spill containment pallets

1. What are spill containment pallets made from?

Most spill containment pallets are manufactured from PE (Polyethylene) or HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene). Both materials resist attack from acids, bases and most industrial oils, and will not warp or crack when a spill occurs.

2. What is the standard size of a 4-drum spill pallet?

The most common 4-drum spill containment pallet measures 1,300 x 1,300 mm. This footprint fits four standard 200-litre drums while keeping the total sump volume at approximately 800 litres.

3. What is the difference between static and dynamic load for spill pallets?

Static load is the maximum weight the pallet can bear when sitting stationary on the floor - up to 2,700 kg for a 4-drum model. Dynamic load is the maximum weight when the pallet is being moved by a forklift, typically around 1,500 kg for the same model. Always check both figures before loading and moving a pallet.

4. Do spill containment pallets meet EPA requirements?

Yes. Under the US EPA SPCC rule (40 CFR Part 112), facilities storing oil or hazardous liquids must have secondary containment. Spill containment pallets capture leaks at source and are a recognised means of satisfying this requirement. Vietnamese regulations set by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment impose equivalent obligations on facilities handling hazardous liquids.

5. Can spill pallets be used with IBCs?

Yes. Specialised IBC spill pallets are available with a 1,300 x 1,300 mm or larger footprint and a sump capacity exceeding 1,000 litres to accommodate a standard 1,000-litre IBC tote.

6. How do I choose the right spill pallet size?

Start with the number and size of containers you need to store. Match the pallet model to that drum count (1, 2 or 4 drums), confirm the sump capacity exceeds the volume of the largest single container, and verify both the static and dynamic load ratings cover your actual load weights.
