Author: Le Van Thang, Director of ICD Vietnam – 15 years optimising pallet utilisation.
Square plastic crates have an equal-sided footprint that loads onto square pallets with no overhang or wasted space and rotates 90 degrees without changing the stack pattern. ICD supplies them in solid and mesh walls, PP and HDPE, sized to fit 1100×1100 and 1000×1000 mm pallets common in Asia-Pacific. For rectangular Euro layouts use standard EU bins. See all types on the plastic crates page.
Choose square crates when:
- Square pallets (1100×1100 / 1000×1000): the footprint tiles edge-to-edge with no gaps.
- Either-way stacking: rotate 90 degrees and the cube still locks – simpler layer patterns.
- Balanced loads: even weight distribution for racking and turntable wrapping.

2. Why a square footprint cuts wasted pallet space
Pallet cube utilisation is money: every gap between boxes is paid air on the rack and in the truck. A rectangular box on a square pallet usually leaves a strip uncovered or forces a pinwheel pattern that wastes corners. A square crate on a square pallet tiles edge-to-edge – full coverage, square stack, stable column.
The extra benefit is rotation: because all sides are equal, you can turn a square crate 90 degrees and it still locks into the same layer pattern, so operators do not have to orient boxes by hand and mixed lines stack predictably. The trade-off is that square crates only shine on square pallets; on a Euro 1200×800 the rectangular EU module fits better. Match the crate footprint to the pallet you actually run.
3. Frequently asked questions
1. Which pallet suits square crates?
Square pallets – 1100×1100 mm (common in Asia-Pacific) and 1000×1000 mm. On Euro 1200×800, use rectangular EU bins.
2. Solid or mesh square crates?
Solid for loose, dry or wet contents; mesh for produce and goods that must drain or breathe.
3. Do they stack both orientations?
Yes – equal sides mean a 90-degree turn keeps the same stack pattern.
4. What material?
PP for general use and food; HDPE for chemicals and freezer.
