Cameras and lenses should be kept at 40 to 50% relative humidity, and above 60 to 65% fungus grows fast; the way to use desiccant packets is to place silica gel packets in an airtight box with a hygrometer, replacing or re-drying them when humidity rises above about 55%. Each kind of item has its own threshold: a gun safe 30 to 50%, an acoustic guitar 45 to 55% (do not use ordinary silica gel, which easily over-dries), cigars 65 to 72% (use a two-way regulating packet, not a desiccant).
This article collects the thresholds, doses and methods for each device.
Humidity thresholds and solutions by device
| Device | Target humidity | Solution | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cameras, lenses | 40 to 50% RH (35 to 40% acceptable in hot humid regions), avoid below 30% long term | Airtight box with silica gel and a hygrometer, or a dry cabinet | Lens fungus grows above 60 to 70% RH |
| Electronics, laptops, circuit boards | The lower the better, usually below 50% | Silica gel packets in a box, sealed bag when stored | Avoid moving from cold to hot humid air, which causes condensation |
| Wet phone | Not applicable | Let it air; a silica packet in a sealed bag for 1 to 2 days is only a supplement | Apple advises against rice |
| Safe, gun cabinet, valuables box | 30 to 50% RH | Silica gel packet or desiccant rod, placed at the bottom of the safe | Re-dry every 3 to 6 months |
| Acoustic guitar | 45 to 55% RH | Two-way regulating packet, hygrometer in the case | Below 40% the top cracks; above 60 to 65% the top swells and glue weakens |
| Cigars (humidor) | 65 to 72% RH | Two-way regulating packet (absorbs and releases moisture) | Ordinary silica gel dries cigars out |
Cameras and lenses
Lens fungus grows under the lens coating when humidity is high, warm and the air is still, leaving unrecoverable haze.
Three international sources (Beyond Photo Tips, Josh Weiss, Howard Environmental) all give 40 to 50% RH as the ideal level; Howard Environmental allows 35 to 40% in hot humid regions and advises avoiding prolonged levels below 30% because it dries out seals and lubricants.
The cheapest way is an airtight box with a silica gel packet and a hygrometer: no electricity, portable, but the packet must be replaced or dried by hand. An electronic dry cabinet automatically holds 40 to 50%, so it suits a studio or someone with a lot of equipment, at higher cost and with a need for power.
For long-term storage in a place where humidity varies, a two-way regulating packet holds a stable level without over-drying, costs more than silica gel and must be replaced on a schedule.
For the airtight box solution, choose a plastic box with a rubber seal and place the camera and lenses with enough silica gel for the volume of the box (the formula is in the article on how to use desiccant packets); Howard Environmental advises using enough for the volume and then letting the hygrometer show whether the target has been reached.
Add a small electronic hygrometer, check weekly, and replace or dry the packets when it rises above about 55%. After being outdoors in hot humid air, let the camera adapt to the temperature before closing the box so that water vapor is not trapped.

Electronics, circuit boards, laptops
For long storage, wrap the device in a sealed bag with a silica gel packet, and remove the battery from battery-powered devices.
For sea freight, use desiccant packets in the carton calculated by volume, see how to use desiccant packets correctly. Desiccant packets only reduce ambient humidity, so they do not replace a conformal coating on circuit boards or dedicated adhesives.
And let equipment from a cold room adapt before opening the bag in a hot humid place to avoid condensation.
A wet phone: rice or desiccant packets
Apple advises against rice for drying an iPhone, because rice absorbs slowly and can leave dust and starch that gets into the charging port.
Apple’s suggested approach is to tap gently so water drains from the charging port, leave it in a dry, ventilated place, and wait at least half an hour before charging, up to a day.
A silica gel packet in a sealed bag with the phone for 1 to 2 days is a supplementary method that works better than rice according to industry technical documents and leaves no dust, but it does not replace taking the phone for repair when water has gone deep or the phone has shut off completely.
Safes
The NRA recommends keeping a safe at 30 to 50% RH: below 30% gun stocks and grips crack, above 50% the risk of rust rises steadily, and from 60% upward there is both rust and mold. Place a silica gel packet or desiccant rod at the bottom of the safe because damp air settles low, and add a small hygrometer.
Each packet lasts at most about 4 months depending on climate; re-dry every 3 to 6 months. A common industry reference dose is about 200 g for a small safe of 5 to 15 cubic feet and about 500 g for a standard safe.
Guitars and wooden instruments
An acoustic guitar needs 45 to 55% RH (Taylor builds in a 46% environment). Below 40% the top can crack within weeks, and above 60 to 65% the top swells, string action rises and glue weakens.
Because the target is a narrow band, use a two-way regulating packet (absorbing when humidity is high and releasing when it is too dry) and a hygrometer in the case rather than a silica gel packet that only absorbs.
In regions of high humidity all year, a silica packet can be used when humidity exceeds 60% and monitored with a hygrometer so it does not over-dry.
Cigars: desiccant packet or humidity-regulating packet
Cigars need 65 to 72% RH, commonly 65, 69, 72 or 75%. An ordinary silica gel desiccant packet is not suitable because it only dries; cigars use a two-way regulating packet that sets a fixed RH. Silica beads treated with propylene glycol for cigars are also sold, but absorb better than they release.
So a “cigar desiccant packet” in search terms is usually this two-way regulating packet, which is different from an industrial desiccant packet.
Common mistakes
Without a hygrometer you do not know whether the box is too dry or still damp. Over-drying (below 30% for a long time) dries out seals and lubricants and cracks wood, so for cameras keep within 40 to 50%.
Using an absorb-only packet for a guitar or cigars over-dries them; a two-way packet should be used instead. A box that is not airtight makes the packet fill quickly.

Frequently asked questions
What humidity is ideal for cameras?
40 to 50% RH. Above 60 to 65% fungus grows fast, and below 30% for long periods dries out seals and lubricants.
How do I use desiccant packets for a camera?
Place the camera in an airtight box with a silica gel packet and a hygrometer; replace or re-dry the packet when the hygrometer exceeds about 55%.
Which desiccant beads should I use for a camera?
Silica gel with a color-change indicator so you know when it needs re-drying. Blue beads are not for use with food, but for a camera it is not a problem.
What humidity should I protect a camera at?
About 40 to 50% RH; in very humid places 35 to 40% can be accepted.
Can a desiccant packet dry a wet phone?
It can be used as a supplement in a sealed bag for 1 to 2 days instead of rice. Apple advises against rice and says to let the phone air before charging.
How much desiccant for a gun safe?
About 200 g for a small safe and about 500 g for a standard safe, placed at the bottom, re-dried every 3 to 6 months.
Can I use a desiccant packet for a guitar?
You should not use an absorb-only packet. Use a two-way regulating packet that holds 45 to 55% RH and a hygrometer in the case.
What is a cigar desiccant packet?
A two-way humidity-regulating packet that holds 65 to 72% RH for a humidor, not an ordinary desiccant packet.
